Im a green tea drinker (and connoisseur to some degree) now travelling in Buenos Aires, I catched a cold, and was drinking mate while I had some flu. Oh boy, I got addicted to it. This is the first drink that is threatening my green tea addiction. I addicted to mate in only drinking it 4 days.
I joined the 'Mate Club' 8 years ago and as you drink it everyday, i like the taste, keeps me awake when i need to stay long or generally after work day brings me back on feet! Honestly - one of the best discoveries ever! Thanks for sharing that!🧉👏

Not all day, just as much as it takes you to finish one thermos (0.5 litres). I normally change the Yerba after I finish 0.5 / 1 litres because it "washes" out, you can see the Yerba is floating so that means it's not fresh anymore, the flavour is almost gone, that's also a good indication that it's time to change it. ✌🏼
Mate is more bitter, more pronounced and bolder than green tea or other herbal teas. I also find most yerba mate to be more or less tobaccoey and earthy than most of the teas. It's amazing, you should try it! :)
Yerba is incredibly variable from brand to brand, even in the same "category". There are major categories though: Argentine con palo (sometimes very suave like Union, sometimes very strong like La Tranquera), Argentine despalada, Uruguayan, chimarrao (Brazilian), terere (Paraguayan, consumed ice cold). Each of these is a whole category, maybe more dissimilar from each other than white/red wine. Generally speaking mate is very bitter. Yerbas that have bits of stems (palo) will be less bitter and easier on the stomach (if you have like acidity issues) than yerbas without stem. But you could write reviews like wine reviews on specific brands. It's a very rich universe -- much much richer than coffee in terms of how much there is to explore flavor-wise.
Oh yes Lauren, I tried in Germany "Club Mate" drink, it's certainly made from the yerba tea shrub but more like a "soft drink" and not the mate we drink in South America. Worth giving it a go :)
