    I have a few of the smaller keychain-type Resqme units. For years I've had one on a paracord loop around the steering column so I could get at it in any position. But when I got a new car I didn't have a long enough hank of cordage handy so I tossed it in the console thinking I'd do it later. Well, never got around to it. Then last winter I hit a patch of ice and rolled my car just outside of Bozeman, and of course everything in the console and trunk was impossible to get at. My driver's A-pillar crushed just enough that I couldn't get the door open, so I spent maybe three or four minutes crawling around on the roof to get to a door that I could open! So when I replaced that totaled car the first thing I did was to put that Resqme on a paracord loop around the steering column! That way it's behind the airbags so it won't get shot into my face but I'll be able to reach it no matter what position my car is in. FWIW, I have tested the Resqme spring loaded glass breaker on some junked cars and it works great. As long as you can reach it that is!
    Note that for at least 30 years I've kept winter safety stuff in any vehicle I'm driving. That includes the obvious like tire tools and stuff, but also a winter-weight Wiggy's bag, Pac Boots, Wiggy's mittens, spare wool hate and a 500mm Silky Saw. The saw is mostly for backcountry where you might find a tree downed over the road. The problem was that having all that in my trunk, I couldn't get into the trunk after the rollover. So for sure, make sure you have a way to access all your safety gear. In the rollover last winter, worst case I could have used my sidearm to either smash the window or even shoot it out in case of a fire. It stayed put as I carry in a good IWB holster.

    Nice video.
    On the Victorinox RescueTool you actually showed the seatbelt knive, not the glass saw.

    I like the little one. ATM, I have a HFT automatic center punch and a knife in every car. It may or may not be enough.
    As no one I know cares and some of you may, last night I converted a 1942 Delta DP-220 drill press from a 4-speed to a 12-speed. Its lowest speed was cut from 380RPM to less than 200RPM. Just as importantly, the extra pulley increases the wrap of the belts. The wrap is essentially the surface area of contact. The better the wrap, the more power is being transferred. A modern Baldor-Reliance 4-pole motor. Best of all, got to use a Starrett mechanical tachometer. Fun in the shop.

    In 23 years of law enforcement I've seen tons of those types of tools. They work well, but I've never seen a driver actually use them even if they have them. Only seen first responders use them.

      And if many who drown from driving into a canal, pond, lake or from being trapped in a flood may have lived if they had this tool. You hope to God you never have to use it, but where I live we're surrounded by water and I think for $10 it's worth it JUST IN CASE. You never know. Actually they'd make a nice inexpensive gift for someone that truly says "I care".

    Doc, how many knifes do you have !? This video really made me think as I would be screwed if I had to break a window or cut a seat belt. What would be your number one tool to have in your car for these reasons ?

    • @lastbesttool
      @lastbesttool  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, my number 1 tool for such things is a razor sharp wood-handled Granfors Bruk Wildlife Hatchet. However, I have a constellation of tools in all my vehicles, but in an "only one" scenario, the hatchet would win. It breaks windows, cuts seatbelts, and that's just first line of its long resume.

    It looks like you get two tools, the original seatbelt cutter and pin side to break glass, which inserts into the bigger tool which also has a seatbelt cutter and glass breaker, is this correct?

      That base plug can't be pulled out with your fingers either. Don't see why they bother with it, could have just left it open on the bottom since the idea is to snap your keychain punch into the handle and stow it that way. Then you can use the handle to strike the glass with the punch (although really you should just press it to the glass), and I guess that's a little better than not having the handle to deploy the punch if that makes you nervous or something. You'd already have the punch and its integrated seat belt cutter, but if you damaged it breaking the window, then I guess the redundancy of having the hammer tip and hammer-mounted cutter as well couldn't hurt. But you shouldn't damage it if you just used it the conventional way and don't smack it into a window with the hammer handle (?). Haven't tested it yet personally or seen a test video yet (why I watched this), but I guess it must work, although when you hold the hammer in your hands, it doesn't particularly inspire confidence. Maybe if someone tends to drop little things, this would be less prone to getting dropped under stress and finding it's way into a place where it can't be retrieved.
