    Electric Yachts look like they are here to stay, and we have probably only just seen the start of the electric revolution. I was excited at the opportunity of following a conversion project, taking a yacht built in the 60's and equipping her with diesel electric power, but there are many other alternatives on the market too. Here are just some of them.

    Diesel-Electric has moved on greatly in the last few years. Much quieter than the norm. On the 75m 'Leander G' we had one Azimuth rotational 260hp stern jetdrive thruster. Great for going through canals and docks. Ideal.

    The problem with a diesel electric boat was demonstrated on the yacht 'Home' during a season of Below Deck: Mediterranean. The yacht lost power in high winds which meant the stabilizers went off, as did the engines and the anchor gear. The yacht was severely yawing to one side and in edition they were being pushed into rocks.

    • @panpiper
      @panpiper ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That could happen to ANY yacht. If anything a diesel/electric yacht would be LESS susceptible to such a problem, as if the engine/generators cut out, it would still have 8-12 hours of full power in it's batteries.

    Hands down, I would go for the SunReef Eco series. Not sure if I would go for the sail version as the sail version has some advantages but also is a lot more expensive and, when watching many cat sailing channels, I see that cat's are motoring 70% of the time. Better have to a dedicated Eco motor version instead of a sail version.
    On a different topic, looking forward to yet another Icon conversion coverage.

      For the eco conscious, a sail electric would makes a bit more sense than a regular electric eco cat. Especially with Sunreef. Aside from the solar panels, batteries are getting recharged with the propellers as the vessel is being dragged by the sails. This I believe is great for power supply redundancy. A real innovation. Sails on a cat can be an eyesore but sunreef has nailed it IMHO👍

    That was among the best of your videos to be certain, and the best explanation of hybrid drives on the internet. You could probably spin it off as its own video on hybrid now and future. Hydrogen is coming, thorium nuclear?, maybe; because, Russia is running icebreakers on nuclear (plutonium I think). One golf ball of thorium has the energy of 20 fuel carrier train cars and aircraft carriers don't have to refuel for 50-years.

    Stanley Myers converted a car engine to run on any type of water. He drove it across the United States to show how reliable it was. He's not the only one though. I've seen the same done with motorcycle engines. Imagine that, imagine having a boat engine that ran on sea water. Crazy stuff I know. Apparently they poisoned this geezer because he wouldn't sell the patent. I think it boils down to the Rockefeller family and it's stranglehold on the oil industry.

Does the B.Yond system ( and Bering) prove that parallel hybrid is still more efficient than serial? if so then why is the Wider system so admirable? for the quietness and vibration reduction? and why did Arksen choose a Serial system from Praxis instead of a parallel?

    There's a tendency to switch to petrol engines with catalysts for smaller yachts in order to meet emission standards. Why not for superyachts?
    Lithium batteries are still a huge safety hazard. If they catch fire and explode you don't stand a chance, no matter where you are on the yacht.

    • @Yachtsforsaleblog
      @Yachtsforsaleblog  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for commenting. I’m afraid you’re mistaken in that no smaller yachts are switching to petrol engines, they are however using diesel engines with a filtering system that acts like a catalytic converter. This is true of all yachts though irrespective of size.
