    Methanol is CH3OH. If Lürssen is claiming "no emissions" - where does the "C" go to? Methanol fuel cells (no matter whether reformed or direct) all have CO2 output. Unless Lürssen is up for a Nobel price.

      Was thinking the same thing when he said they discovered something more energy dense. Was half expecting that they would next discover diesel is even more energy dense.0

      I think they are envisioning a carbon neutral life cycle of the fuel, where the results of combustion is offset by carbon capture in the production. Of course, this should always be mentioned as a qualifier, since there are other methods that are not very clean.
      And saying that there are "no carbon emissions whatsoever" is a lie. Even if that carbon was captured from the atmosphere.

      @@lionelgower6877 Thats missing the point..producing hydrogen from methanol aaaaaand burning it still produces CO2, that's just the way chemistry works. It may be more envriomentaly friendly but it still is bad for the climate.

      @@Kraxelaxel Depends on where the methane (or the methanol) is coming from. SpaceX is planning to get theirs from free air CO2 capturing and water electrolysis, then recombining the C and H2 into CH4 (methane) and keeping the oxygen.

    I've seen so many futuristic designs for yachts, cars and so on. But somehow they never end up produced. It is so much easier to make things look exciting but so hard to make these things work. At the end of the day the existing, well tested but less exciting designs are used all over the world for a reason.

    Nice nod to Star Trek with the bridge crew uniform. I brought this very yacht up in the livestream with Turquoise's CEO. I'm sure you remember. The plants get me. I think they will get destroyed. We'll see.

    I think the strides towards cleaner energy are fantastic. But why do these 'future yacht' designs always look like anything BUT a yacht? If a resort with parks is what they want, then why not just buy, well, a resort?
    That said, nothing to stop us from building a 'classic yacht' whichever way we like it, but with modern technology at the core. Hats off to Lürssen for their work 😊

      Maybe they do want a resort with park but one that goes through the sea but you don't see any of those around, do you? Regular yatchs with hotel layout have become so mundane and boring that even I who never owned one don't feel the slightest exciment seeing a new one of those being built.

      @@jimj2683 It doesn't. If it over 40', and is a 'pleasure craft', it's basically a yacht.
      The fact that they all look pretty much the same (in their size range).... you'll have to take that up with the owners. Yards build what people want.

    The fuel cells are still fed with hydrogen, this system just has a methanol reforming stange on it, and the carbon in the methanol is still exhausted as CO2. It beats internal combustion for efficiency, but it's not zero-carbon.

      It is zero-carbon if trhe methanol is generated from renewable sources such as solar, and that is in fact currently how a significant amount of the world's methanol is being produced. The generation process takes the carbon needed to synthesize methanol from the air, so when it is combusted, the carbon does not 'add' to the carbon emissions, it is simply returned.

    The power system sounds cool but what's going to happen to all that acreage of water when you encounter 3 meter seas? Or how magnified will a 3 degree roll be on a salon that's 35 feet above the center of gravity? I hate to second guess Lürssen but it looks ill conceived to me.

      @@GENECARP They're sure gonna need it. But why not just save your money and stay on the beach. It seems they're trying to get away from the Yacht experience with planters, water features and elevated swimming pools. I'd want my Yacht to carry 5 or 6 sailing dingy's so the passengers could have a good time racing instead of sitting on a park bench throwing bread crumbs at whatever aquatic fowl you manage to attract.

    How does this concept by Lürssen compare to the solar propulsion advocated by Silent Yachts? Also, David, please make a video of the new Silent 100! :) (The Silent 80 is no longer their flagship.)

      I guess at that length it's the best they can do with the current technology to get as close as possible to zero-carbon emission. Btw I recently got my hand on a brochure from that silent 100 and tbh i'm impressed! I can't wait for David to give a proper update on that company.

      Same guess here. I find this project interesting, but I see Silent Yachts way ahead in the production line. Of course we are talking about different dimensions, but wouldn't be easier to scale up a model that is already working?.

      @DL Field: Everything containing water, hot tubs, pools, ponds.... are drained during passage into their own holding tanks with filtration system & heaters if required. Then refilled when they reach their destination or anytime they're not underway. When at anchor or at dock, ships stabilizers maintain level decks.

    Not completely taken by the exterior, but then it is a concept craft. The advancement of fuel cell technology will be truly vital to yachts and road vehicles. Currently with cars methanol is used in the same way as petrol and diesel with many of the same drawbacks. Top marks to Lurssen for making it emissions free. Only possible drawback in Brazil they chopped down lots of rainforest to grow the sugarcane to make the methanol.

    No toxic emissions, silent, and no vibration.. it sounds like happiness to me... The design could be a little more appealing (asthetics) as opposed to just exotic, practical or eco-friendly... Bushes and trees on a yatch? I don't know... Interesting concept, though. The video editing keeps improving 👍

    Amazing Concept, but for me it rather loses the basic element of yachting, the intimate connection with the sea/oceans.. I cannot help but wonder just how with all that open recreation area, she would cope with say a Force 8 gale, let alone a full-blown Hurricane...?

      I was wondering too: What's going to happen to that garden at the bow when you're motoring full-speed into a headwind? Or if you get caught in high seas and those plants get drenched in sea water?
      I love all of the internal technological advancements. What they've proposed is truly wonderful, but something tells me the artistic design elements will go through several revisions before the boat is actually built.

    If the yachting industry wants to have zero emissions from power plants it needs to focus on sails! For existing motor yachts using diesel fuel the industry needs to convince the public that emitting 1000 kegs of CO2 for every 400 litres of fuel burnt is acceptable. It will be interesting to see if COP26 will make any difference to the charter market. Meantime many low lying island nations (charter destinations) are considering banning motor yachts from their territorial waters because of the associated pollution. Any financial benefit gained by having 12 visitors (a typical yacht guest compliment) is dwarfed by the environmental impact damage.

    Fascinating. I wonder how much of those ideas would translate to other things. eg the RN could use many of those ideas for propulsion and energy in their next gen warships. Could some of those ideas scale down to vehicle traffic? Nice presenttion.

      From what I hear, fuel cells are destined to find their way into many different applications. It's an exciting developing technology.

      fuel cells already found their way into cars. the toyota mirai has one.
      they just have the tiny problem that hydrogen is expensive, fuel cells are expensive, hydrogen erquipment is expensive and that most hydrogen right now is produce through gas reformation. meaning you get 9 tons of CO2 per ton of hydrogen. so just driving an equivalent gas car is cheaper and produces less emissions than a hydrogen car.
      and obviously battery EVs are alredy cheaper than fuel cell vehicles both when buying as well as fueling up.

    Good Morning David. Great to see the future of super yacht power. With the world turning away from fossil fuels and towards a more sustainable and more eco friendly power source. What will happen to the thousands of gas guzzling super yaghts that currently plie the oceans. Maybe you could do a video of an engine change on a super yacht, moving from diesel to electric. How the process works ie: getting the engines out and remodeling the engine room to take the new power packs. Thanks again for a very informative video.

      A modest family car might do 30 mph, a modest family yacht might do 0.3 mph. We do not currently have the energy density/weight ratio to overcome this 100-to-1 disadvantage.
      The moment we do we can start to green the fleet.

    Methanol is a far safer fuel than hydrogen. It can be renewably sourced. Reforming methanol into hydrogen does release a lot of CO2 -
    --- The reaction - 2CH3-OH (64.08 gm) + O2 (32.00 gm) = 2CO2 (88.02 gm) + 4H2 (8.06 gm)
    --- 1 kg methanol results in 1.374 kg CO2 released.
    --- Reforming methanol requires 50% of its weight in oxygen to release 1.374 times its weight in CO2 to get 12.58% of the weight of methanol in hydrogen.
    --- I'm surprised they are just converting the diesel engines to run on methanol for the drive system, and will only run the services off the fuel cell and battery system. This is a very soft conversion to fuel cell operation. Obviously, reforming methanol and the fuel cell both create heat - so plenty of heat for other systems.

    I am not a fan of greenery on the yachts! They will die seasonally then also clean up, then trimming them! I saw a yacht with a design of a tree growing from its main deck! Ever think about it’s fall season and then pollen as well or when it starts budding again in its spring state!

    The design concept is nice, but I don't see it making it to reality.
    1) I see the plants getting killed early and often.
    2) The water-park stream will have to be emptied and filled every time, and I wonder how an empty stream will affect stability, considering it doesn't look equal on both sides.
    3) The tennis court is a horrible concept. Not even thinking about the number of tennis balls that will be hit into the ocean, but it's a waste of dedicated space. I'm sure once reality kicks in, it'll be used for sun bathers or tenders, when not entertaining at the docks.
    I would consider having my crew wear Star Trek: TNG uniforms, though. ;)

    But of course, in order to achieve this efficiency, a type of capital is necessary, as could a system based on an ideal of communism, to be able to achieve this type of progress, because this type of dream would certainly be something fantastic, because a feeling of capital , it will be totally abolished by the nomenclature that would see this not possible. Only capital could put this in everyone's hands with hard work and determination.
    Methanol, also known as methyl alcohol, amongst other names, is a chemical and the simplest alcohol, with the formula CH₃OH. It is a light, volatile, colorless, flammable liquid with a distinctive alcoholic odor similar to that of ethanol... In a single word, Methanol...?

    Methanol is made from natural gas, are these ships to carry CNG and make their own Methynol on board? I would think fueling with already made methynol would be safer and increase fuel capacity and range. My CNG vehicle has a huge tank that takes me almost half the distance of the gasoline tank it came with. Oh and taking my CNG vehicle out of my main operating area is impossible due to CNG fueling stations. non existence., especially in Texas..

    Speaking of Future Technologies: There was a news story, a couple of years ago, when one single swedish u-boat "killed" a whole US Navy fleet in a NATO maneuver. It was possible, because this u-boat ran on a super silent, vibration free Sterling engine. I guess, the military fleet doesn't have to be very economic, if it's super efficent. But...
    Do you know of any current vessel, that uses such an engine or any plans to use one? I'm super curious!

    Methanol is CH4O If you transfer that to Hydrogen H and oxygen O to put in your fuel cell you still have C left. where does that go? if you claim it doesn't emit co2 ?

      The short answer is: Yes, CO2 is produced and vented as exhaust.
      I'm guessing electrolysis produces far less than diesel combustion, plus it doesn't include all of the other nasty by-products.

      It's claimed to be carbon neutral because the carbon sucked out of the atmosphere while producing the methanol (i.e. from biomass, recycled CO2 etc.) is released back to the atmosphere, hence it's not increasing the overall CO2 levels. Burning fossil fuels in comparison, releases the CO2 in to the atmosphere that was captured under the earth millions of years ago and it increases the current CO2 levels.

    Almost every comment is talking about the fuel cells. What about the aesthetics of the design? I love the look of this overall. So much more creative than your typical white birthday cake looking superyacht and its overblown interior spaces. I think the plants are a bit much though.

    I normally really like your videos but I just can't get on board with a video about a plastic toy that will never be the inspiration for a real yacht. The methanol fuel cell is definitely a real thing, as is the reharvest of waste heat, but none of those features are actually part of the toy.

    They are lying to you, fuel cells are not the future. Batteries and energy efficient vessels that recycle energy and use energy available in our surroundings are. Why? Because you need a lot of platinum for the fuel cells, way more than is available to all of us. Moreover, the real problem is peak oil, energy shortage. That is why efficiency is so important. As to methanol, that is plant based, using valuable agricultural land to produce said plants. Not sustainable, we need those agricultural lands to feed the world. Meaning the sustainable future, they dream of is a future without most of us, a future where only 500 million of us remain. In that context, the Lürssen yacht of the future, is indeed sustainable, since then, with only 500 million of us, we can again waste energy and resources.
    So you see, there is no solution here, only lies and bloody murder. Instead, as I said, we need to work on efficiency, more efficient hulls and propulsion systems, electrical ones is a good start as that cuts the energy needs into 1/3 just y using electric engines. Now add advanced hull forms, light weight build techniques and propulsion systems and we can have a battery driven yacht with transatlantic range already now. (I am designing one with just those features.)

    I really am very ignorant and I apologize if my question is totally wrong but what I don't understand is why it is not possible to produce hydrogen directly on board using seawater. Desalination first, then electrolysis and done!

      My understanding is that the energy required to make the fuel (filter the water and split the molecule) takes more energy then you get back from the hydrogen. The hydrolysis has to happen at an external source, and it's not very cost effective.
      Apparently, methanol can be split more efficiently.
