That's weird, I have ADHD and I find time blocking to be so restrictive that it sets me into a panic. You say it prevents us from getting distracted, but setting a time for a task doesn't prevent me from thinking about the other things I want or need to be doing because I have no sense of priority. Since I think everything is urgent I feel like I'm always missing something. Time blocking makes me feel like I'm doing the wrong thing at the wrong time and I can never follow through with it.
THIS!!!! You put it into words. My mind jumps from one thing to another, and it's an understatement to say that we easily get overwhelmed. I could not ever rely on myself to structure my time.
Same for me. My time-blindedness manifest in a way that I cannot know for sure how many time needed to do things. I used time-blocking to finished my work, but at Day 1 I finished at 30 mins so I used that as a basis for my work time, but the next day I was zoning out for more than an hour so the time spent for one task ended up bloating to 1,5 hours. Even when the next time I plot my time in 1,5 hours/task for the same task, the time would grow exponentially. ^^;
For yearly/long term planning, I found it helpful to make a list of my top 3 goals for my lifetime, 3 goals for this year, 3 for this month, 3 per week and 3 per day. Take the big ones and break them down into smaller tasks (your short term goals) on a full year calendar. I take a sheet that lists all 12 months for the year on it and take my big goals and break them down on it so it's manageable and then break those down per week and then day on a regular calendar (digital or paper). Haven't heard of the apps you use but I going to check them out. I have found (working from home it has worked well and I keep coming back to it even when I forget about it) that a sheet that listsy time blocks (empty) and has a slot for notes, daily routine tasks I want to keep on top of and meal planning too. Print it 7 times and put in page protectors in a binder. I use white board markers to map out my week, it's easy to change whether it's new week or I forgot about it for a few days. Plus I put all the recipes I love to meal prep in there so I always can find them and any other things I want to reference consistently. Won't be quite as useful if I stop working from home as it's bulky but I'll cross that bridge when the time comes...
Wow! I've been doing a very similar technique and it's been working very well! My therapist recommended making the paper and pen EASILY accessible...otherwise I forget about it. I keep it right on my work desk so I see it every day. The time blocking has worked for me because I am able to trust the schedule I've set up for myself each day. Later on in the day when I feel an impulse to do something else, I'll write it in the notes section or the page so I can schedule it for another day. Writing it down also gets the thought out of my mind, onto the paper, so I don't stress about forgetting what I wanted to do.
Out of all the adhd videos on google I clicked this one bc I saw the cover for this video and my brain thought I was looking at a picture of my younger self for a second😅 but the info in this video was also very useful! Time blocking is hard for me bc I’m too idealistic or I spend too much time obsessing over designing my “perfect day”, and then if I wake up late my plans go out the window.
The OG bullet journal is really helpful for me, as someone with ADHD. If I spend 5-10 minutes checking my bullet journal in order to prepare for my work day, I am much more productive. The only part of the bullet journal I don't really do is the daily log. Everything else about it is very helpful for me.
I have struggled with anxiety and depression for many years. I also feel like I struggle with focus and ocd. I’ve noticed that I obsessively buy sticky notes and write to do lists. This helps me with motivation because I wanna check them off quick, however I get overwhelmed. I am planning to type and print a checklist / reminders to help me every day because I also am very forgetful and my mind goes blank when I wake up. I’m gonna try this, thank you!
love this! I absolutely love my Passion Planner. I've jumped from planner to planner but the time blocking is my personal favorite. I tried the Erin Condren hourly but it only does 6am-7pm. The Passion Planner goes 6am-11pm and has a section at the bottom for to do lists which I love.
This came up first on my front page so I think you may have potentially hit the algo-rythms. Either way, this is a great video. Editing is perfectly done, no half-assing, no little errors, it was professional and casual. You're making a huge effort for what I initially thought was a 30k sub channel, and I would love to see you carry forward this momentum you're carrying toward your TH-cam. I can tell you're gonna grow big much sooner than expected! You're very spot on with your tips and even the things that you said you weren't too compatible with resonated with me absolutely. I had a look at your channel also, and you're the same age as me and was diagnosed at the same age as me also... adult diagnosis was probably the most heavy experience I've had to endure in my life. So yeah, it was nice to see for once someone else essentially going through what I went through around the same time lol. You have a great analytical approach to these things and it feels like your processing of thoughts are just like mine are. Throughout my years as an ADHDer I've also developed my own systems and its good to see someone out here exercising their own self development ADHD-wise on TH-cam to share with others. I'll definitely be sticking around and hope to see your channel grow!
Thank you so so much for this amazing comment ☺️ I am so grateful you took the time to write those words and that you were able to relate to my videos 😃 as you said I am exercising my self development journey with ADHD on TH-cam and I’m driven by the passion to share and help others who are you going through the same stuff as I am 🙂 so seeing that it actually resonates with a lot of you makes me incredibly happy and fulfilled! Your support is very sincerely appreciated ❤️
I'm actually really excited to try out owaves especially. Love colour coding and for some reason, the pie chart is really satisfying to look at. I've been taking a gap year but I need to prepare stuff to get into college, so I hope this will make me a little more productive.
Thank you, this video is super helpful! For long-term planning I'm using a weekly review in Notion in combination with Trello where I store my tasks; on Fridays, I go through all the tasks, think of long-term goals and reprioritize accordingly. In order to not become overwhelmed by new ideas and new tasks, I've set a limit on the amount of tasks per week that can enter the Trello board.
I love this video I am trying to help my third year college son who’s been struggling with time management and ADHD I love your calm voice, but I had my headphones turned all the way up while on a walk and still couldn’t hear you with traffic buzzing by, so not sure why since other TH-cam videos I watch I can blast them in my ear while I walking with traffic go by her cause I would love to see that fixed if possible🤷🏼♀️🤩 but all in all, loves your tips, just need to figure out how to get my son on board to make these ideas his so he will use them🙏🤞❤️
@@youradhdgirl I forget which video you said this in, but the indecisiveness on ordering from a menu thing was super relatable and I have started practicing intentionally not putting too much weight towards my "perfect choice" and it's been great!

EDIT: So I found an android version of Owaves, Sectograph has a circular widget that I'll be using from today, I'll hopefully remember to say if it actually worked for me! Before Edit: I use android so I'm off to find something like owaves for my phone, but I agree that seeing my whole day on a circle widget would probably help a TON. Also thank you for the book recommendation, I'm a second year uni student and it's been incredibly tough keeping on top of things and my uni doesn't have adhd or disability help
I have the same problem with these suggestions as every other time management system I've heard. You're telling us what we need to do but not how to do it. Here's me trying to time block. It takes me a week to figure out what goes where and when i finally get it all in place, i start changing it because i just thought of several variables. I then try to follow it but get completely overwhelmed and can't figure out exactly how I'm supposed to follow it. Two weeks have gone by and I'm now running around putting out brush fires because I've lost control of everything while trying to time block. If i scheduled my laundry, it would never get done. Instead, i go to throw a shirt in the laundry and notice that there's enough for a load. So i throw it in the washer. Takes two minutes. Later i notice it's done and hang it out on the line. If it's not raining I'll notice that it's dried and put it away. If i waited for the right time to do laundry my clothes would be out of control.
How to do this time-blocking if I never know how long the task would take and even with a task that I've done before its time can vary a lot? I have this especially with tasks that require creativity or with stuff that has to do with editing (I never know how long will take a specific text)
I know exactly what you mean because I struggle with the same thing! I never know how long editing is gonna take and I’m very bad at estimating what my energy level is gonna be when I reach a certain point throughout the day. For a coaching/ philosophical answer: My best advice is to not stress too much at first about the difference between the planned and actual time it takes to complete a time block. It’s okay and even advised to refine your time blocks as you go through your day! Stuff comes up and you might be able to only spend an hour on editing rather than the whole afternoon. Then you might actually be so exhausted that when you get to the editing time block, you have no energy left for a whole hour so you only do 20 minutes of it and THAT’S OKAY. We stress too much about our plans being perfect and deploying them to perfection rather than just doing our best. I very very rarely end up spending a day that looks exactly like my time blocks, and I decided to be okay with it. Since them I’ve felt much happier with how I spend my days. For a practical answer: I just discovered this app called Sunsama which allows you to do a lot of things planning related (video coming about this soon), including a feature that lets you define the planned amount of time you want to spend on one task and the actual amount of time you spent on it (which you add at the end of the day, when you reflect on your day). It’s a super useful feature I think for us ADHDers because it helps us become more conscious of where our time actually goes! I first heard about the app on How To ADHD’s channel so she definitely saw potential of the app for us ADHDers 🙏 Hope this very long comment answered your question or part of it at least 🥰
I think you have a lot of good things to say, I cannot hear you, you speak so softly if you could please turn up your microphone. I have you turned up all the way still can barely hear you. If you could please turn up your microphone when recording. thank you
Thanks! I’m not sure it’s a problem with my microphone because no one ever mentioned it in the comments… you might be referring to my soft speaking which is often due to the fact that I’m not alone in my house 🏡 but usually I make up for that in post production! I’ll keep an eye on the volume 👌🏼
Apparently Owaves is coming soon on Android! Until then I don’t have any good recommendations to give as I’m not an android user.. hope someone else will be able to help ☺️
I don't know if you realize it or not but your video keeps jumping like it's jumping to different scenes I don't know exactly what to call it. It might be some type of editing issue but it's kind of hard on the eyes
