I like how the N54 can take parts from the new B58. Sort of like reverse hammy downs lol. I run NGK 2 step cold spark plugs gapped to spec .022 inches/0.56mm on a stock motor I'm getting ready to mod. Torqued to 17 ft lbs. Paired up with Eldor ignition coils. Car is very happy, about to hit 97k miles.
I have the 2 step colder gapped at 0.020" , 22 psi boost on 94 octane that has 10 percent ethanol , ran good for 10 thousands kilometers , just got a knock on wot near redline, the plugs are the first suspect, they're expected to have a short lifespan.
0.46mm on 2 step colder plugs is what I use on 30 psi . But that also depends on what mixture (afr ure using at what rpm/boost level )and fuel type. No magic bullet honestly all depends on what ure tuning (fuel / mixture / boost level) and what logs look like. Edit : repeating myself above but really there's too many variables that go into making that decision.

I just order the nexsys N55 kit and I’ll be doing the b58 eldor coils and b58 plugs i like the idea of bring a cleaner burn and a much more advanced spark set up to an engine that should have had that sort of investment in from factory at the first place

No issues until about 1k miles ago when it began to have the slightest misfire at cold start via my butt dyno. It just feels ever so slightly lumpy (nobody notices but me) until it gets some heat into it. Purchase everything from FCP, so I've been thinking about ordering up some new coils (replaced same time as the plugs) and giving the b58 plugs a try. Not sure just yet.....watching YOU guys to see what's best to try next!! Lol

@10:50 keep in mind outlets are different for RHD and LHD cars. The rear turbo has the cold side twisted a bit, and also the wastegate actuator sits in a different position. Also RHD cars have the steering column going right by the rear turbo outlet, therefore making it high-flow is a bit sketchy.
I have ran them at .022 and even 0.024. But it does seem some cars are different will need different gap. Also depends on how hard you are running the motor.
So the general consensus that I read about and was told was for every 100 or so hp you increase the engines performance by you should increase the heat range one step.. that being said I've been running my junk on one step colder plugs than factory since the beginning without any issues (yet)... a bigger plug gap will burn more efficiently than a smaller gap providing there's adequate coil available where the smaller plug gap will not (blow out) under higher boost but will not burn as efficiently under low boost power levels... (at least as far as I'm aware) either way good vid keen to see you wind it up some more amd smash your record 😁🤘
The superceded NGK 1 stage colder plugs were the 95770 (ILZKBR7B8DG). These were replaced by the 97968 (ILZKBR7B8G). What difference the 'D' makes in the number, I am not sure. I run a gap of 0.018" on 100% E85 and 28psi boost. I do have timing corrections so it would be interesting to see how the 2 stage colder would perform.
I've just got the B58s in my car, and corrections are still very prominent, however i did gap them to 0.020" i might drop that gap down a little more. But it's quicker so far.
@@ZeroTo60Tube My car was pulling hard again last night at rolls but kept spinning up the AR-1s in 2nd even on 10psi boost. Once it started spinning, I just changed into 3rd and went from there. Oil cooler worked well. Temperature didn't go any higher than 110c. Great night with 10 runs.
@@kencooper8636 I did see a video of your car racing Daves 135i. Man you slingshotted once you got your power down. I normally launch between 15-20psi at rolls, but i still have to pedal it, can't go wide open throttle on the get go. I normaly aim to get to wot by the top of 2nd.

Ok nice plugs but are you reading the plugs to determine if you need a colder plug eg the heat strap how far is it burning towards the thread Are your plugs too cold? Also I’ve used a resistance plug it’s the r in the part number and I don’t see the need to run iridium plugs as there a disposable part for the engine at your boost level I run a ngk non resistance plug $8 each and that’s on Lpg which is damm hard to ignite especially with 22psi boost and gap them to 18thou and only changing the heat range if needed by reading the heat strap

I've ran 2 to 1 to 2 step in my mmp stage 3 turbo and e50 mix. I got longer life out of the 2 step than the 1 step. Somehow I got arching 20k miles later on 1 step with pr coils even tho I put dielectric lube. Hasn't happened with 2 step and going good.
I have fresh 1-step colder plugs, gapped .024 on my Daw Flow Max+ n54 (that I bought because of you!!) running 93oct only. The car runs great EXCEPT there's the occasional misfire on top end pulls. It's to the point my car shuts down a cylinder sometimes, and the car begins to sound like a Subaru. I turn off the car and turn it back on, car runs normal again, but I'm afraid to keep doing pulls like this. 😅 Could it be a gap issue? Do I need to go down to .022 instead? I have brand new fresh Eldors for the record. The only other thing I think would be injectors, but they're index 12s, and should be fine, but I guess I have never leak checked them and probably should. I'm leaning towards checking out the plugs & maybe re-gapping them, but I also ordered new Brisk Racing Silver plugs and want to see how they do.
My shop is a BMW specialist, he swapped my old plugs to 2 step colder. I have plans to run an MHD tune but still stock at this stage. Are these plugs still ok while I’m stock?
Hey I see you have some outlets on the table. Would love to see a video on what you replaced them with (being right hand drive) and the other differences we should be aware of compared to LHD.
I am sure that Andrew will chime in but I recall seeing the outlets being a discussion point in one of the build videos for the 17t's from last year...

What about BMW's OEM flex fuel plug (NGK SILZKBR8F8S)? I have a set waiting to go in my full E85 N55 that's currently running the 97506s. We'll see if there's any difference.
Is it true that the top of the spark plug tip (where the boot connects) is different on n54 plugs vs b58 plugs? Because burger motorsport said you could potentially have misfires w n54 plugs & b58 coils?
I'm FBO with hybrid turbos and installed the B58 coil kit back in April. I'm still using the 2-step colder NGK's (97506) but should I be using the B58 NGK plugs?
If you have no problems. Dont even think about it. However might be worth trying the B58 next plug change. Always speak to your tuner. I have a little suspicion, some plugs will work better with some tunes.
Wouldn’t recommend B58 spark plugs with N54 original coils. I fired my mosfas on my MSD80 by doing that 😅 Ideally you want to run B58 sparks with B58 coils.
i run 1-step colder NGK. With 0.022" gap my car missfired heavily on cold starts (after little warmup was everything ok). I gapped them then to 0.028" and now it is running perfect. Maybe stock tune or Bosch coils are not familiar with 0.022 gap ? i dont know...
Same happened to me. Put in 1-step colder ngks at 0.022", stock tune and car was misfiring on cold starts, fuel economy got terrible. I went back to oem bosch plugs and it stopped lol. Think it needs to be tuned for the step colders

@@jay-cee4499 all the off the shelf tunes require catless downpipes and intake mods to be able to use them. MHD stage 2+ plus (which I’m currently using) specifically mentions the need for catless downpipes as well as JB4 map 2 and 5, which both get you to that 420bhp mark.

@@Eliasccv14 under load plugs definitely wont effect this, unless your current ones are faulty. Under WOT anything between 11 and 13 afrs is pretty normal. However you dont want your trims bottoming out. Might be worth posting a log on spoolstreet or E90post for peace of mind. I use the 97506 on my stage 1+ n55, one step colder.

15k miles is around where I would change them

97968 on 15t hybrids, 18-20 psi. Gapped to 0.024”. Pump 93+ a little meth. 100-200 in high 5’s. 😀 I have 3.46 gears in my lsd with the 6MT.

Ngk 97506, single turbo n54 6875 ran up to 32 psi never have missfired due to spark plugs

Definitely gap down and try first. But its not uncommon for injectors not sealing proprly to cause that
You should take a spare Eldor coil you have lying around in the shop & show us on camera if the b58 plug will fit properly 🤔
I did try it, but I can’t be sure it connects with the plug property, will need to throw a b58 plug in a N54 with N54 coils and see if they work

If it's on a stock map then no need , if your running stage 2 + mhd then yes 2 step colder , stage 1+ for 1 step.

A little advice, avoid silicone outlets. I’ve read countless stories about them melting, Rob beck ones in particular.

NGK ignition coil is good? Have you tested?
I havent used the NGK ignition coils but if you are under 100hp per cyl pretty everything out there will be fine.
If it’s a street car and cruises and idles I’d be running a warmer plug

Speak to your tuner. If you are using JB4 back end flash, the JB4 guys recomend 2 step colder.

There are heaps of options to my understanding. And different brackets may need different boots.

You might have trouble with 420 on catted downpipes I’m afraid. Decat is an integral part of reaching that power level.

Plugs steps won’t really effect lean or rich. What other symptoms do you have?
@@ZeroTo60Tube my stft in both banks get really low and high while doing pulls, I’m not really sure if it’s lean but I’ve been trying to see if this is a normal phenomenon
@@Eliasccv14 under load plugs definitely wont effect this, unless your current ones are faulty. Under WOT anything between 11 and 13 afrs is pretty normal. However you dont want your trims bottoming out. Might be worth posting a log on spoolstreet or E90post for peace of mind. I wouldn't bother with facebook groups fyi, too many clueless experts on facebook.

Who on here is running the Audi R8 coils on their n54 with full E85?
With a stock DME, the r8 coils seem problematic from what people tell me. B58 is the king at the moment.
I heard Corn Fed Boost wants to ECOTEC swap an RX8 LOL and i said i know someone that may have a dead RX8... 😉 😉 😂 😂
Haha, I’d say they’re are more Rx8 that need motors than ones that dont
