Myself and a friend just did this job on my 2006 Commander today. We were able to drop the rear of the driveshaft and remove the bolts holding the gas tank in place which gave the tank room to shift out of position enough to get the bolt out of the driver control arm. Thankfully he had a lift and a trans jack to hold the tank up. Great job with the video.
Mine broke on the rear driver as well. I was thinking of running the bolt on the opposite side as well. No way in hell am i doing all that bs for a bolt
Yep, same here. Just finished the job by cutting off the head of the bolt and ran a new one backwards as you have both stated. Added a little locktite for good measure. BS to have to drop the tank.
theres a reason all engineers designing cars should have a mechanic with them when their figuring these things out so when they do something stupid the mechanic can crack them across the knuckles with a wrench
@@davidbarretto5511 yea, unfortunately it does. That upper control arm bolt cannot come out without removing the gas tank. Unfortunately the head side of that bolt is really close to the gas tank but it passes through a few inches of metal before it gets to pass through the control arm, so even if you were to cut that bolt off on the nut side, you wouldn’t be able to push the bolt out of the hole because the gas tank is still in the way. I hope that helps you and wasn’t confusing in any way 👍🏻
You can put a jack under the rear differential or axle tube, and start coming up on the jack. Watch which way the suspension moves. It should move in the direction you need. If not, reposition the jack, and try again until you get the movement you need
Thats kinda where its jacked up could i put a heavy duty ratchet strap on the right side of axle an right side frame an safely pull it foward like that ? Or wpuld i have to move the jack from the diff first?
@@osavage3136 you definitely could try a heavy duty ratchet strap, if not, maybe you’re up too high on the differential, and you need to let off the jack and see which way the suspension moves. Obviously put a jack stand under the frame first before you let off of the jack
Thanks for the video. Having to drop the gas tank was beyond my comfort level and I took it into my mechanic. Definitely one of the worst designed cars on the road. Simply turning the bolt would have made it a simple job.
Youre welcome. It’s what my buddy and I are trying to accomplish by making these videos. I agree it would be so much easier to have spun the bolt the other way, but of course they didn’t. Dropping the gas tank can seem like a task that is too intimidating for some, but I promise you, anything Rob and I can do in these videos, you can do as well. It’s a good practice to take your vehicle to a mechanic if you’re unsure or feel uncomfortable, and I’m glad you got the problem fixed, but don’t let the intimidation steer you away. You got this! As far as being the worst designed car on the road lol I agree! My wife has the same one (she loves it, and I don’t know why), but it’s the same problems, same headaches, and same frustration! Best of luck with yours! If you run into any more problems or have questions about anything, feel free to stop by the channel and ask. I’ll be glad to help any way I can!
@@noprosgarage I like a lot of things about the liberty but knew I would be in for an adventure after changing the oil for the first time. Replacing the oil filter is a testing exercise. For a 10 year old vehicle, I have not had to replace much.
Yea, the oil filter is definitely a pain. My wife’s has had its fair share of issues between electrical, and heater core, and some other things, but between my wife’s liberty and Rob’s wife’s liberty, they seem to have identical issues fairly close in mileage to each other. So I’m waiting on the control arms to go bad on my wife’s next 🙄. But, I can agree, it has treated my wife pretty well over the years, and has worked well more often than not, so I can’t complain too much.
Yea, it was a nightmare job for sure. The only reason I didn’t cut that bolt myself, was because I didn’t like the idea of not having that locking tab that’s attached to the bolt. As shitty as these automotive engineers are with their designs, I feel like it might have been there for a reason. I don’t know for sure. But, I do hate that vehicle with a passion! Lol
Yea, European cars suck. I tend to stay away from them. However, I’ve worked on Jeeps, Hondas, Toyotas, dodges, Chevys, Fords, and out of all of those, these Libertys are built pretty shitty. But, I do agree, there are WAY worse out there for sure.

This is a very good one. I think you are one of the best I ever seen. Cool
I'm cutting the bolt and replacing it going in opposite direction.thats to much work for me to drop the tank for a 6 dollar bolt

Cut the bolts and flip the direction of the new bolts, then you don't have to drop the tank or exhaust
did this work for you?
Do you have to drop the tank for the other control arm right above that one?

@@noprosgarageno completely understood it I also snapped the clips where were you able to find replacements?
@@davidbarretto5511 Im sorry, it's been quite a while since I did this job or watched the video to refresh my memory. What clips are you referring to?
great info thanks for the video a real life saver !!
I have done all of this but control arm is a little off how do i adjust the suspension a 1/2 inch forward?

Wow, after all this, I think I have decided to cut the bolt out and buy a new bolt. this vehicle has sucked more money out of me than any other.
