  • Welcome to Perky's Analog Gear Demos. Please subscribe for more demos of vintage & rare effects pedals!
    This is the big one! Three Fuzz Faces from three of the most revered boutique builders, made in three different countries & using three classic Germanium transistors. What could be better?? I know, I know...
    From England, we have The First Fuzz from Denis Cornell, loaded with a pair of NKT275s. From USA, the Analogman Sun Face - with the Red Dot NKTs. And from Greece, the JAM Pedals Fuzz Phrase - packing the CV7003s.
    There's always much talk about how these three transistors - and also these specific pedals - compare to each other. But today we're not going to talk about it - we're going to do it! Differences in component manufacturers, bias, etc might play a small role in some of the sonic variations between these pedals - but the bulk of what you're hearing is the transistors.
    What do you think? Which is your favourite? And why? Comment below!
    Guitar is a Fender Strat through a Hughes & Kettner Puretone Combo (recorded with an sE Electronics RNR1 Ribbon) and a Cornell Romany Plus (recorded with a 57)

    Great review Joe!!! I've been contemplating between the Jam and the Sun Face. You've made up my mind!!! Cheers!!

    Great demo, thanks! Fuzz Phrase for me, Analog close second

      Good choice! Though I think I'd maybe switch those two around ;-)

      To my ears the Analogman is less bright than the Fuzz Phrase (and I prefer that). Do you hear the same? If prices were the same I would definitely go for the Analogman. Though I think the Jam looks cooler ;-)

      @JoePerkinsMusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep - there's really not much in it, but the Sun Face is the warmest of the three...which I quite like! :P

    Joe please make some Sun Bender and other Boutique maker comparison just like this one you did greatly with the Fuzz Face realm, keep it up mate!

      I'd love to, but I don't own a Sun Bender! I've never felt the need to look beyond Nick Williams for my Tonebenders - but if anybody wanted to send me some, I'd happily make that video!

    Dig Jam, but gotta say for a fuzz,- BOTH of the 275's have got the crackle/ grind, and the classic treble booster twang clean.If you wanted a more civilized tone , then the CVs are probably more "transparent"- though, it is a Strat, so the twang on cleans is legit.
    They're all great unit units, just slightly different flavors,- lost in any live situation.The important thing is that you love the fuzz.

    Hello ,my favourite is the Cornell Warm sound.

  • @postlude1
    @postlude1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    When you dimed the pedals they are almost identical. If you got three Analogman or Cornell side by side, they would all sound slightly different anyway due to component tolerances.

    • @JoePerkinsMusic
      @JoePerkinsMusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, absolutely agree. At lower gain the subtleties come out - but when they're cranked they're all so similar that it's almost impossible to pick out any differences between them!

    Was stupid and sold a high gain NKT red dot sun face, just made up for it by getting a new sun face cv7003(just up on their site again😍😌) looking forward to it even more now after hearing this vid😄

    • @JoePerkinsMusic
      @JoePerkinsMusic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah nice :-) Yeah, if the Fuzz Phrase was anything to go by, the 7003 can be very close to the NKT :-)

    • @HyBr1dRaNg3r
      @HyBr1dRaNg3r ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JoePerkinsMusic Yeah it was really interesting to see how clean the NKT sun face was in comparison to the 275 and 7003, I like having a little extra edge when backing the guitar volume down! Right now, I have a ti/ga1432 and a low gain BART/RCA hybrid(the ac128 “muffy” sounding one) The GA has a TON of gain, the BART is interesting because it barely gets fuzzy, but it’s still got an interesting sound! Love the different options available! Thanks for a great comparison vid!

    Red dot sounded thicker and the fuzz quality seemed most appealing, is this the new batch of Red Dots that he has up now?

  • @chimpsticks1
    @chimpsticks1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Man, there's so little in it! And they all sound pretty similar to my homemade BC108 loaded fuzz face.
    I think the conclusion to be drawn here is that fuzz faces are great.

    If you had mikes white dot it would stand out. to me on this one its the cornell. p.s. great tone and playing. good examples. well done man.

    Great video Joe, quality content! I sold my Fuzz Phrase last summer, I felt I was satisfied with my Bearfoot Candy Apple (Ge) and I needed the money for a Suhr guitar. However, I'm thinking of buying a new one again, I do miss running two Fuzzes on the same board. (Subscribed btw). Cheers!

    • @JoePerkinsMusic
      @JoePerkinsMusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah cheers mate :-) Sure that Suhr is pretty awesome!! Yeah, all these pedals are absolute monsters...and as you can hear, there's really not that much between them when they're dimed. The JAM is certainly awesome - I've never tried one of Jannis' pedals that I don't absolutely love!! Thanks for watching (& subscribing!!)

    • @bjornsahlin

      I have the Fuzz Phrase. It has a fair bit of noise when rolled back. Hoping to find something less noisy that cleans up nicely.

  • @benspinks342
    @benspinks342 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just out of interest did you specify a particular gain level for the Sunface?

    • @JoePerkinsMusic
      @JoePerkinsMusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ben Spinks Nah I didn't - so I'm assuming it's the 'standard' medium gain!

    Honest opinion, I thought the cornell and analogman sounded like a bloated mess, the jam blew both of them out of the pond. Maybe the fuzz phrase suits those who dont dig loose, bloated and bass heavy fuzz tones.

    Cornell by far the worst.
