    What’s awesome is that with every purchase of a sun face Mike includes a bag so you can store the cash you need to save to buy a sun bender, peppermint, or Astro tone. Thanks Mike, my NKT red dot/RCA hybrid is one of my most prized possessions.

    Just proves the Sun Face is the best fuzz pedal ever made. What I love about the Sun Face is that it sort of straddles the line between overdrive and fuzz. Every other fuzz I've ever heard is so over the top that I don't understand how people can stand them, but the Sun Face is controllable. I particularly love the NOS NKT 275 with a carbon zinc battery.

    Wow! This turned out absolutely phenomenal! I had such a great time helping you guys film this episode and hearing you play! The way you were both able to emphasize the shear power of those square waves going through that amp setup with your playing, could only be described as glorious... Looking forward to seeing you guys again at NAMM in a few weeks!

    Just found my BC 108 at the bottom of my teenage bedroom closet at my parents house over the holidays! Apparently, it's #10? At least that's the number written with a marker inside. I found it with only one screw holding the backplate. Been digging through storage for months to finally find it!

    FFS why the Fuzz is so hard to choose the right Fuzz pedal to the degree of no two pedals are the same. Now with the bias trim inside everything is going well.... More fuzzy-wuzzy. thanks guys!
    I'm just so glad my big muff pedal keeps it simple for me and my wah works infront of it.
    Which could be another 'pedal show' The best wah- fuzz match up experience .... Testing a combination of the two please let it be!

      I love my big muff. modded by a famous amp builder locally. but i recently got a 63 jtm45 clone and it honestly sounds awful with it. with my fenders its SOO kick ass. so now i need a fuzz face type. and the sunface seems it. but man the price. might just diy one for 50 bucks lol FF circuit is so simple

    Just picked up one of these, NKT red dot. I'd been watching this video, went to the Analogman site and started digging through all the options, reading about it all, then I happened to go into a guitar store that I hadn't been to in a while to pick up a cable. They had a new one in stock, told me they order a few at a time direct from Analogman and sell them about as fast as they get them. It has the sunface bias dial and also the power off toggle on the fuzz control, exactly the options I was looking at. No LED though. Anyway, seemed too serendipitous, had to give it a test and walked out with it half an hour later. Thing that strikes me about these is that as high end pedals go, it's not super pricey for how freakin' magnificent it sounds. Totally worth it for such a great sound. Plus, I won't lie, it's just such a cool thing to have on your board. : )

    Adding resistance at the input with the internal clean trimpot, reveals a magical balance between the fuzz and the dynamics of the guitar and amp.

    I just received a Sun Face in the mail this afternoon. I am very impressed so far. I don't particularly like fuzz pedals, but after viewing the above video for the second time I became interested because they sounded so much better than ones I had played. Well the one I received is an LG (low gain germanium) and in addition to sounding excellent, it is amazingly quiet. Fuzz pedals I've played previously were always buzzy, hissy, very noisy affairs. Not the Sun Face. It's ultra quiet. It cleans up so well when you back off the guitar volume and then delivers a cutting, tight fuzz when you raise it up. I'm happy. Been playing it with Fuzz at about 3 or 4 o'clock and level at 11 or 12. It has the SUNDIAL, so I've been playing around with that as well, which seems to basically adjust the voltage. I haven't opened it to mess with the trimmer. I'm assuming turning the trimmer clockwise will give me less overall fuzz, but it's sounding very good the way it's set up right now.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice one Paul - enjoy that fuzz. It’s all about the guitar volume control and working those sweet spots. Once you’re really familiar with it, have a mess with the trimmer too. Cheers!

    The funny thing hearing all of these back to back is this...it’s a matter of small percentages. Say the “best fuzz” on that board is a 100 to my ears. The “worst fuzz” on that board is still a 98. It’s those little intangible differences here and there that add the extra little “whoa” factor. Gaining that last 2 points is amazing though. It’s a matter of doubling, tripling and even quadrupling the price depending on the piece of gear you’re dealing with. The question then becomes. What price are you willing to pay in order to get what you REALLY want. For some guys, that’s a stock ts-9 going into a cranked blues jr...which is great! That’s a classic sound. For some guys, it’s the rarest, purest fuzz going into an amp that eats fuzz for breakfast. It’s just a matter of “priorities”. The standout issue being price. Just remember though...it’s all in what the market will bear. If someone is selling an nkt for $500 or an early analog man prototype for over $1000, it is what it is. People will either pay for it or they won’t and the price will always reflect that. It’s not mike’s fault. He’s only building some of the best fuzzes in the country and saying “this is what I want for my time and effort”. Fair enough dude...if the world were a “fair place”, you’d be a multimillionaire, imo.

    Great video guys! Always associate silicon fuzz with David Gilmour. Epic solos on Time, Money and Echoes and his Live at Pompeii tones were just mega. • @lunkercarp
      @lunkercarp 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Piedscooter1 yah I guess what I meant to say was I had an amp simular to that in 1976 it was the Acoustic brand ...100 watt combo with e.q. I spoke with the now Acoustic company and they said that was with an earlier management team in the 70's and he had no knowledge of what the model number was....I was only 16 at the time and bought that amp and a new Americans Fender Stratocaster ....it was a serious purchased for a 16 year old, and took 2 years to pay off my first ever loan. Any info on that amp would be cool...I only had 1picture of the two together...but could not read the model no. I believe it was a twin combo w/ e.q. 100 watt...

    • @Piedscooter1
      @Piedscooter1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Acoustic 360's and 371's were bass amps with enough low end power to rip off the bell-bottom trousers of the operator, and to blow most objects that were not tied down in front off the stage. Jaco Pastorius used one. John Paul Jones of Led Zepplin used TWO in a live setting.

    Interesting how the 'trimmer' adding resistance at the input, yields a different effect than simply turning down the guitar volume pot...kind of like the effects of gain staging where you add it at different places in the chain yields different effects...theres no substitute for experimentation, even when you understand what a circuit should or shouldn't do...you never cease to be surprised in one way or another!

    I ordered an Analog Man Sun Face after watching this episode about two years ago... and it has been off my board because I didn't know how to use it. That just changed about two hours ago when I ran it into my cranked Tumnus Deluxe with reverb, delay, and some harmonic trem and now I'm buzzing like a bee. 🐝 I can now say I finally "get it" thanks to you two and I can wear my TPS fuzz T-shirt and not be a poser! My KOT is my #1pedal. Aside from the amazing & stellar tones of Mike's li'l beauty, the main thing for me is the way the volume and gain knobs work. slow & steady, evenly increase of the cosmic whatever, adds more of what you want. No fits and starts. No abrupt bumps in the night, only smooth sailing 'til I run all in. The runner ups is a fairly long list, and the list of 'bought and solds' is even longer. Topper? Analogman. Thanks Mike.

But I think Roger Mayer is the god of pedal builders for the work and innovation he did with Hendrix, my favorite guitarist. Those tones were monumental achievements in modern music and had an immeasurable influence on generations of guitar players.

    27:00 That difference you hear between buffer on/off after a fuzz (which can be very annoying with brighter amps) is the difference in capacitance between a short patch cable and a longer cable to the amp: that forms a low pass filter together with the fuzz volume pot! Try adding a switchable 470 pF (more or less) cap to ground at the fuzz out, to keep your trusted guitar-fuzz-amp tone when you have a buffered pedal after the fuzz!

    Bc183 is incredible. My Eric Johnson. Ff is literally one of the best pedals I’ve ever played Once you have it dialed in it’s so incredible. I bet the sunface 183 is similar.

    I can't find a fuzz that I'd like, whenever I hear them I still go :E but I always come back to this video and my face is melting with a joyous smile with those germanium sun faces. I don't want to accept that some day I need to put a lot of money to get one and it might be too late when I decide to pull the trigger. The nkt 275 really is something. This is how fuzzes should be made. This must also be at least 3rd comment throughout the years on these vids. And only now I realized it was released on my birthday.

    I never realized how much I need one of these! They don't make the NKT275 anymore, but the people at Analog Man recommend the BART if I want that sound.

    I want them all. I’ve had mine a while now and it is the ruler in my rig, the point where I’ll probably have to get a g2 just to run it. Very clever Daniel.

    Love Fuzzfaces, so inspiring to play. Silicon, germanium, doesn’t matter. Fuzzface is still a Fuzzface and it’s all awesome. Of all the awesome videos, one of my favorites for sure. Got into them cuz I love Jimi, and Stevie, but love them cuz they are such an awesome pedal.

    I´m never buying a germanium fuzz face again. I´ve had Analogman germanium fuzz faces and others, and man what a hassle they are. They never sound the way they´re supposed to in my rig and in my house. Something always ruins them. Silicon fuzz faces, however, are my favorite pedals of all time! Couldn´t live without them. Thanks for finally putting this up!

    • @CorbCorbin
      @CorbCorbin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      bigJohnnybabyboy I've Had A Dallas Arbiter Sil 109 for years. It cleans up smoothly and sounds just the way I want. So many people dog on Sil but when it's quality components they sound great. Also can put it anywhere in my chain and it's fine.

    • @fuzzface8252
      @fuzzface8252 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Germanium is very sensitive to temperature. In my experience if the pedal lives in a room that is below 70 degrees, it's going to sound like crap. And if it's above 75 degrees it's going to sound like crap.

    • @mattgilbert7347
      @mattgilbert7347 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love em as long as they see an unbuffered signal, no probs. I like a bit of good ol germanium fuzz sag.

    • @Robstafarian
      @Robstafarian 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Inconsistent performance is why germanium was abandoned as soon as possible. However, that which is more consistent and/or more efficient is not necessary better suited to one's tonal and dynamic requirements (e.g. solid-state amps versus tube amps).

    I opened my MJM London fuzz to find a adjustment pot. I trimmed it back a bit and it sounds less “ fuzzy “ and more amp like. Great advice, I think I will keep the fuzz on my board.
