Man this has to be one of the best car vlogs. Stripped down an entire RB in a 20 minute video and made it look seamless, no overwhelming information that non car guys wont understand. Really hit the nail on the head with this one mate, really looking forward to more of these :)
I used to drift an RB25 swapped s14 and got the exact oiling issue you are speaking off, at least you caught yours during tuning we blew the bottom end out on track. Either way keep smashing it mate, by the end of it the car will be a legend.
yep oil starved, there is a channel dedicated to stripped engines exactly like u did -- "idocars" where u can get an education on the effects of oil starvation. The engine had had a hard life, it didnt look well cared for. no signs of detonation in the chambers, the headgasket looked bad, to crack like that i rekon it overheated at some stage
Unfortunately this is just the risk you take buying second hand engines. Didnt swing in your favour this time but let it be a learning experience for yourself and your viewers. Very well put together video mate. As a rust and car enthusiast i am really enjoying this change. Keep it up 👍
I'm more of a muscle head myself, but and engine is an engine. Sick vid Surge. Remember these 2 things when it comes to engines. 1 - Second hand is only as good as the day before it fucks up. 2 - If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing !
dont touch the oil restrictors just get one of the rear head drains that goes into the welsh plug on the back of the head and shell be tip top after that
To fix the rbs oiling problems you can go a few ways depending on budget and end goals you can put oil restrictors in the block to stop the oil from filling up the cylinder head another way to tackle that issue is to add a rear head drain which uses one of the welsh plugs and helps that problem another thing that helps a lot is a sump with extra oil capacity Dry sumping the engine will fix all the oil problems with the rb but it is a costly endeavour
As a previous owner of an R34 GTT, I’m loving this skyline content. But you have done really well mate with being able to go into detail about your process but also at the time keeping it quick and fresh. Keep it up legend 🤙🏻
RB oil issue was exactly my gut feeling when I saw the previous video. Not sure if I should be happy that I was right, or sad for your loss. Either way looking forward to the future updates.
crank collar mod and cylinder head oil drain kit with a oil sump girdle and your pretty sweet. further than that you could upgrade the oil pump gears an that but thinking about it you probably want to keep more oil in the pan. cylinder number 6 is obviously know for heat soaking as well so thats something probably influencing #6 to go like that. motor was probably flexed on or ran lean for too long an oil drain issue seals the deal completely. heat will make oil coke up everywhere as well so regular oil changes are a must if your going through constant heat cycles an limiter bashing heaps
I'm not a car guy and know very little about cars but for some reason I enjoy these videos. I watched another channel rebuild an old pickup truck from scratch and that was fun to watch too.
Spool Headdrain, spool oil pump gears, the crankshaft you need to get it grub screwed, the nose welded up and have a solid square piece woodruff key cut into the cranknose. Cranknose is very soft, ive seen many rb cranks of all generations spin the woodruff keys off the nose. ** restrictors for the oil galleries in the block is essential too btw
Love the style of video. Very interesting to watch. I see you being very successful. The added sounds, and explanations. I did hope to see a glance of the pistons, but after watching more, it didn't really matter. As a mechanic, there wasn't anything triggering, except for the mess haha.
When you hit rock bottom on a 25 so decide to go all in and take on the final boss of oiling issues hahaha Mad videos mate, only just came across them 🤘🏼
Rb oiling issues are pretty easily fixed, oil restrictors in the top of the block done by a machine shop or Franklin head drain is the best option for them. Tap the rear welch plug in the head out then tap two M6 holes in the back of the head (use machine shop) then it screws right into the back of the head, and you can run it back to the sump, works on rb26s just needs another fitting, the cheapest way to conquer the issue. Loving the build keep going it’s worth it in the end.
100% not the tuners fault, they are constantly checking fuel ratios/ boost oil etc to make sure it’s not going too far on the dyno. I think the engine starting spewing out the oil wouldn’t of helped but it’s probably down to just being sat for soo long before you bought it. I built a car in 2016 and didn’t use it often enough and took it to the dyno last week and it blew the bottom end, even though I did an oil flush/ engine service etc it just does it no good to be unused. I’ll put a video out on that in the next few weeks. Did a dyno day on my Mk1 back in April and went through what needs to be done on a fresh engine build, like wearing in the piston rings on the dyno etc. maybe worth a watch.
This is some gourmet content I'm loving it and I'm not that big on rbs, could tell pretty much straight away the state of that cylinder head was a red flag and it's actually amazing it survived the 280kw tune the first time. Big dog forged bottom end and you'll be hissing for years to come.
I'm so glad you started this channel! Been watching every single one of your videos for years and have always had an interest in your cars. (Especially this r33) . Keep up the amazing work! This is some absolutely fire content!
My best advice is you have to do everything by the book and spec. Measure everything and go out the reading. Bearing clearance. Crank size and bore size. And best oil suite your clearance.
Yeah, I had a #6 ringland blown in my Rb25det before I got it. I had to take it all apart and let the machine shop check everything. I will say the RB is expensive to rebuild if you are a regular guy like me and have no connections. I am excited to see this build!!
I know this seems weird, but this is the first video I've found of your channel, and I want to thank you for having ears and mixing your music and voice over at the same level. It's awful having to turn the volume of a video up to hear the presenter, only to be deafened by music a minute later. You accomplished a great mix, and I didn't need to adjust my volume once. Plenty of channels with 20x your subs still make this mistake, and I can't stand watching them. It was so good I paused the video and spent the time to tell you about it. I really appreciate it. Good on ya, great vid, had an awesome time.
Very much worth testing the new RB’s block, head, crank, valves and cams before spending any money on parts. Those stock parts can USUALLY last pretty well, but, the pistons, rings, rods and EVERY bearing are 100% should replace if you’re looking at flogging it/high power. They’re points with the most heat and wear plus there’s no harm in some forged pistons/rods over 100k plus km stockies. All gaskets (ESPECIALLY RUBBER) should be checked and replaced. I mean a full engine gasket/seal kit might cost you $200 but one faulty cracked gasket will lead you a lifetime of leaks that you’ll never find. Upgraded oil pump is a must as you said and upgraded oil lines too. New AN lines are always safe. And look at installing an oil cooler too, it’s literally unscrew oil filter, sandwich plate on, filter back on, AN lines on, hook AN to cooler after pre filling the cooler and mounting the cooler, which they’re pretty small so can be easy. It’s just maintenance shit before power, you can build most of your power from your boost and it can be done safely if your internal dare upgraded
Get an Aeroflow oversized sump as a starting point, then you can either get the return lines in the block bored out to a bigger size, or add an extra head drain.
Real bummer man. Had a bearing go on my Neo motor and just finished the rebuild. Thats the route Id go rather than using a running second hand motor. But keen to see where you go with this.
Oi Benny boy! I rarely ever comment on TH-cam vids so let me start off by saying I adore your content. Either rust or the vlogs, shit is top notch. Keep up the great work and ol girl will be up and runnin soon and I can’t wait to see her in action! Cheers brotha!
I don't know, to me that tuner was an absolute champ, knew what he was talking about and dumbed it down pretty well I think. I think the oiling issue with the is probably what knocked that RB, especially since because you were at a tuner and the rb25 has baffling in the oil pan there is no way oil slosh would be the problem. I also think that the engine wasn't making enough power to shatter the oil pump and shear the snout on the crank. Fantastic videos keep it up
Amazing content Surge, my first car was a 1990 gts-t type m skyline I bought in 98 so I’ll always have a soft spot for these cars, currently in a 20 quantum grey A4 Audi but I still see myself back in an old school skyline one of these days, and although you’ve had problems with the 25 I couldn’t help but laugh at the 26 cover plate at the end. Can’t wait to see what you do mate.
That engine has a lot of heat fatigue in it and a fair amount of sludge build-up I had this happen to my engine which resulted in me having to do are engine rebuild Nissan told me that it was due to the previous owner not changing the engine oil when it was meant to be changed which resulted in excessive heat because the oil wasn't doing what it was mean to be doing due to lack of oil changes as for the sludge build-up that is due to mixing different brand oils once you find are brand oil that works for your car stick with it do not change, I ended doing the rebuild my self with are few mates we all had to learn as we went because we all had very little experience with rebuilding engines but we took our time and got it done now she is as good as gold I hope you get this beast back on the road brother best of luck 👍
