Can we just talk about how Outlast (2013) was really ahead of its time? I mean, after a game like Slender and before a game like P.T., it´s really good and I personally still think it´s one of the best horror games ever, it introduced me to horror and it really made me appreciate the timing, lighting (with the camera night vision and all) and twistedness a horror game needs to actually be scary. To me, Outlast 2 didn´t even come close. The only horror games that were at the same level (that I watched after Outlast) were Last of us, especially with the storyline, and Resident Evil 7, which is mainly just because it straight up freaked me the fuck out. [Edit] I feel like I need to rephrase and explain because some comments made me rethink a bit. I don't think the phrase 'ahead of its time' is really fitting with Outlast if you just look at it without the context of this video. I meant it in the context of this video, in particular between the games Slender and P.T. It was ahead of those games and looking further into it, there were some games that were even farther ahead of its time, like maybe Fatal Frame, which user Endless Evanescence said. I also didn't really grow up at the same time as many of the games mentioned in the video, I am technically part of the generation that should be fangirling over Jake Paul (I'm above 13 though, thankfully), but I was always more into games (what can you do? I guess girls can be games, Pewds). I hope I cleared some stuff up. Have a nice day, people.
For me outlast 2 was just as good, because as well as the 'real life' horror being scary and fucked up enough, they also added the element of psychological horror which I absolutely love. The story is good as well, I love the world-building; although I must admit the chases get monotonous and just annoying after a while. The soundtrack and voice acting are great, and seeing as it's the second video game red barrels has made, the graphics are quite good, and the atmosphere is awesome. I think my favorite things were the transitions between the 'real world' and the school 'flashbacks' and I like that later on they blur the line between those two settings. But I agree with you, not a lot could beat Outlast 1, not even re7 imo
How was it ahead of its time? It's a great game with fun features and a great atmosphere. And it did great in terms of sales if I remember correctly. Not only that, but it got a sequel and other games began "copying" it's style. Ahead of time would be if it came out and nobody played it resulting in failure. No sequel, no nothing. However, later down the road, maybe a few years later, games began to copy it's style and those games began to sale like crazy, making them popular and such while leaving outlast forgotten. That would be made it ahead of it's time as it foresaw success in those types of games, however it didn't succeed during it's time of release.
I rlly liked the horror atmosphere of Outlast- hearing your character in distress feels like something that alot of recent horror games either minimize or get rid of entirely and i can't understand why they do that! It makes the game feel so much more real when included!
That is a nice touch. It just feels kinda subpar when your character is put in this horrifying situation and isn’t like “holy shit oh my god” every 2 seconds.

[Edit]
I feel like I need to rephrase and explain because some comments made me rethink a bit.
JoeLion Couldnt have said this better myself.
Yenna van Eeuwijk // Thanks!

Yeah
No it didn't. And that was OK, because it was not a graphics driven game.
In my opinion outlast is literally my favorite horror game

@@peytonthepug1065 resident evil is SCARY in it's on way, but silent hill feasts on your mind. They studied how the brain works just to find ways to make you shit yourself 60 times before progressing 😂 if that is not going lengths for a game then I don't know what is.
