This is awesome news. I own original CD copies of those games and I start them up occasionally, but it’s great for people that never had a chance to play these classics.
I was playing a Killing Floor 2 map from Unreal Tournament . I said the music and the map were cool and I loved UT99 a long time ago. My friends scratched their heads. I have my original copy, so I installed and went through DM, Domination, CTF and Assault , showcasing the game. After seeing this , they remarked how Halo and other games tried to do this but Unreal Torunament just looks so polished in it's gameplay design. *I agreed* It's why Unreal Engine is so ubiquitous to this day
Whereas at Valve the original Half-Life and Half-Life 2 still get updates over 20 years later. Unreal was a fine game back in its day and would have deserved a company that cared.
Brother! YES! This is exactly what we want, what a glorious victory. I couldn't get UT99 to work and now I'm downloading it right now. I would like to play some matches with you if you are down
The problem was never that you could not get the game client. Most people in the community would give you 436 NoDelta if you asked. The problem is that they shut down the master server. If I knew that people still wanted to play the game, and that they would actually be able find the servers, I would strongly consider bringing the two main Sniper Mayhem Zeroping servers back online. I still got them zipped up, Linux and Windows versions, ready to go. But then again, one of the reasons why we shut them down was that the guys making the anticheat mods left when they found paid work. So I guess it would be all that shit all over again.
Luckily for me, I already own all the Unreal games ever released, but despite this step, I will NEVER forgive Epic for what they did, to UT series (including 4), but also Paragon (for which they originally started killing UT, ironically).
Awesome! My UT clan used to host our own server for UT, UT2k4 and UT3Black but shut it down last year due to cost and lack of players due to it being impossible to buy the game any more.
The game is a lot of fun. Personally I think UT99 is the best version of UT. It only lacks a bit quality of life in some areas. For example the netcode and anti-cheat could be improved and I really liked the HUB system from UT4. A faithful UT99 remaster with modern graphics, a responsive gamefeel and some additions like ranked modes for CTF, TDM, Duel and Battle Royale would be amazing
Ha Ha Ha! Oh Yeah! You Suck! You like that? Just by seeing this gameplay, i want to start playing Unreal Tournament again. This game was so addicting. Normal Weapons and Instagib in DM, TDM, CTF. Good times. 😎👍
I personally think with the release of the secret level episode on Unreal Tournament, on amazon in December I think we are in for a resurgence of Unreal. I can not wait to see what happens with it after that episode. Maybe Epic has something up their sleeves. Why would they update the 1999 intro to a modern day? My fingers are crossed we might be in for a treat.
@@JGCO115 Lol, arena shooters are dead, Fortnite has nothing to fear with over 4 million concurrent players each season. UT will never pass 100K in a million years, no matter how good it was.
I remember reading somewhere that is was apparently due to legal issues after one of the court cases with Fortnite which apparently forced them to delist their old UE games.
Neither Unreal nor Unreal Tournament were ever threatened for preservation. It sucks that Epic removed them from their store fronts, but the games have been readily available for decades under many forms and are backed all over the internet. It's not like they're online only titles that rely on the publisher's servers to function.
They also have had basically no problems running on modern machines. Honestly it's impressive; very few games from 1998 & 1999 can actually run out of the box on a modern computer, but I haven't seen any need to patch the games beyond what was officially released. Even getting widescreen support and super-high resolutions can be achieved by simply editing a text file in your settings.
I still have my physical copy of Unreal Tournament, works fine on modern systems. BUT THIS IS AWESOME! I love this! Hell yeah! Game Preservation score! \o/ Now if I could only get someone to make me a single player mod so I can play as the female robots in campaign.. ;;
That would just be a simple replacer mod. The script needs to detect the character being used and replace it with the desired character. It would only be a few lines of UScript. There are a few resources online still where you can learn UScript, you should try it yourself.
If this is an attempt by Epic to "win back" some goodwill from us players, then I gotta be honest, it's working a little. Still mad about the other games being unavailable, but they didn't have to release these again for free
I played UT so much as a young adult. I beat the entire "campaign" on the second to highest difficulty. I'm not sure I was able to to it on the highest. Now? I would be so rusty, and have too many other things going on to ever get that good again. I'm getting the game, though. Also, there are only a handful of truly "Oh, wow!" moments I had playing games. Loading up 2Face for the first time and looking up was one of them.
The problem is that UT99 doesnt have NAT integration so you have to mess around with port forwarding to play an online DM with friends, to the point that everyone gives up. If it had a Steam integration with Steam servers where you could just host and connect to a server like in Half Life 1, that would be massive.
The links are in the video description I got my news on this from Wario64 and a few other news outlets such as RPS, polygon, PC gamer, etc. Old unreal is the host for the installers of these games.
Never liked multiplayer. Always sucked at it, and I enjoy progressing through a good narrative. That being said, I loved the original Unreal (single player)
This is great news, however they did not histed anything right? They just gave the permission for the community to legally host the already uploaded files, right?
@@Neo-vz8nh No it does not. Players are hosting everything. The only requirement is that the sites must host a specific installer. I believe this is just to ensure people are not trying to create their own installers that could have malware.
Havn't seen an official Epic announcement, this sounds like a strong "Trust me bro" by OldUnreal. And it's better to get the versions of GOG anyways, they're out there as well.
There are countless news sites such as RPS, Polygon, PC gamer, etc. Even wario64 talked about it. Epic gave the greenlight for them to share the full game out they just had to use a specific launcher for Epic to okay it.
Community took care of the other games, and 2004 for example there are still a hand full of used servers. At this point epic might as well f off, the community had to pick it out of the trash after epic tossed the entire franchise for fortnite server cap. I would rather have them fuck off
Too bad game is dead and filled with bots unless you find people who wanna play on discord, just like any Arena Shooter. Unless you live in Europe, for some reason american gamers hate arena shooters more than any other country.
Rare Epic W.
OldUnreal still kicking, those beautiful people.
I played Unreal Tournament so much. It was so long ago I hardly remember it. I remember the competitive nature of the game and how much fun I had.
I downloaded it and got it working! I'm playing again for the first time in 28 years. THANKS.
this is how every company should handle legacy games that they don't want to support anymore
This is awesome news. I own original CD copies of those games and I start them up occasionally, but it’s great for people that never had a chance to play these classics.
WERE BACK BABY!!!
This is an awesome step towards preserving UT
JJ gonna gib me for years to come

you can get custom master servers now
I have the whole collection on Steam, bought it long before they were delisted, luckily.
I only have Unreal Gold at GOG. Almost late for me, although I still own the DVD Anthology that I bought during the 00's.
At this point they should stop calling it the Unreal Engine and call it the Fortnite Engine if they're never gonna make another Unreal game
or the "Epic Engine"
Luckily for me, I already own all the Unreal games ever released, but despite this step, I will NEVER forgive Epic for what they did, to UT series (including 4), but also Paragon (for which they originally started killing UT, ironically).

Unreal 4 Ever! ❤
Unreal gold is a masterpiece
I hope Unreal 2 and UT2004 will also be available.
The one and only thing Evil Epic finally did partially right.
Unreal news is the news I need

cant fucking believe that 2 days ago I saw that you couldn't play this anymore only to be right on time for it's comeback, wtf
I could hear the music and sound effects of the gameplay.
Nice. I play it with my son a lot. Still have the files form 2000s tô this day. It have the updates from oldunreal
Downloaded it I just want to know now how to add mods but umods doesn't work anymore ?
What would make my day is an applicable patch for the old Unreal Engine games, so I could install my old Harry Potter games and just play them 😅
If Epic gave the permission, why they don't host them by themselves?
They don't want Fortnite to be overshadowed. Since that and selling engine licenses are their main sources of income

Ultra Rare Epic games W
I want someone to do to Unreal what Crowbar Collective did with Half-Life when they made Black Mesa.
🤫
i remember some ppl were trying to bring back unreal 4 (the newest one) any news on that?
It seems possible to play from the research I have done. I will see if I can get more info on it.
I AM THE ALPHA AND THE OMEGA!
does it run on MAcOS ?
What i would give to have UT3 back
Community unreal matches?
i played UT4 a bit recently (4 is the newest one, just called UT)
You thought I was gone forever?
Nice!
Im playing Ut 99 with steam :D o bought it at 99 cent 😊
