This guy has some experience with it. I have owned my 1987 Honda CR500R for 30 years now, and still ride it. All original, including the seat cover, in pristine condition. He starts it without killing himself, the soft kicks are to prime the engine, the fuel and choke are both on. Just sucking fuel into engine. Then a brisk kick after several primes. You can never "flood" a 500. Just too much air moving at each stroke. Mine has never fouled a plug either. I'm still scared to hold it wide open on any terrain, and pavement she'll lift the front tire at anything over 50% throttle no matter what gear it is in. Higher gears it just lifts it faster. Low end torque of a 4 stroke, and top end power of a locomotive going downhill. There really is no powerband or getting up on the pipe. Eats a chain, sprockets, and rear tire once per summer.
I’ve never fouled a plug on any of my cr500’s (86, 92,97 or 03 (service Honda) same goes with my yz490… I run em real oily too, 32:1 Cr’s and 32:1 + a very generous splash in a full tank on the 490… I love these things as I’m sure you do too.
Simon Templecombe ummmm you sure about that,,,, I know a few girl's at out club, 5000000 bucks you would not get past them here's one for you... th-cam.com/video/2pG_rnnlIp4/w-d-xo.html
This video is ooozing testosterone and love. This is a man who is comfortable in the way he looks and the decisions he made. I admire him. Living in front of his (I assume) home that he is building himself and appreciating the dirt bikes he loved of his youth. All this while the bbq is in the making and a friend holding the cam. I can´t get much better than this.
You can...........an old TV in the background playing the Ateam and a dog catching a frisbee in slow motion at the end thrown by the camera man whilst Mr moustache points at the camera and winks like "yep, that's it" ........and scene! Masterpiece
The key with the higher displacement bikes is to find the compression stroke right before TDC and the Combustion stroke and give it a whirl! Also smart to prime the cylinder with some fuel by "walking" the kick starter a couple times.
i rode one of them back in 88 (ish) when i was a young'n. Will never forget it, and instantly had admiration for the guys that rode them and made it look effortless. Those bikes are demons.
Keep that bike forever and take care of it. 85’-87’ were the most powerful Honda 2 strokes ever made. 86’ might be the strongest year. That thing is a rocket on 2 wheels!!!
I miss my red rocket it was an absolute beast I struggle evan getting on it at 19 lol by far the most exciting bike I've had and I've had my fair share of bike's. I'm more in love with 4 strokes now I'm older got myself a yzf 450 proper machine
Just got my 86 cr500 fired up for the first time today after a complete rebuild top to bottom. 514cc 91mm wiseco piston. Unbelievable compression, made the mistake of trying to start in a pair of slip on Van's and immediatly hurt my foot. Moved onto a pair of worn workboots but damage was done. Finally got it started tho, I'm not quite tall enough to start the bike without leaning on a wall or up on a stand tho. Bike is huge lol.
I had a '86-I believe that was the most brutal motor/hardest to start and that Honda began de- tuning them after that. I bought mine in almost unused condition in 1989 from a guy who used it to ride wheelies up and down the side of the roadway by his house. the rear wheel had never been off, chain never adjusted and the axel was galvonically welded to the bearings so I took it to a shop to have it removed. I didn't have a driver's permit so when I picked it up my plan was to ride it 20miles down the side of the railway tracks to my home. the flaw in my plan was that the clutch perch was broken making clutch control problematic and there were something like 30 short trestles over roadways and creeks where I had like a 6" wide path to ride across. not wanting to fall off a bridge I would turn the bike off and walk it across and then re-start it. I woke up the next day with my right calf and upper leg swelled to almost twice their normal size...
Wim Rawe Dam, probably couldn't hardly see anything either with it being dark. Learned the same lesson on my Blaster that was bored 0.50 . Took 8 or 9 kicks to fire but they added up after riding all day and shutting it off everywhere I went. God dam heel of my foot was swollen twice as normal and called off work and laid in bed all day because of it. Haha👍✌
This short little video is just simply bad ass. Classic lookin guy with a good mustache, cold start on a classic dirt bike. Little fire bbq action. House under construction. Don’t know what’s goin on but i wish i was there hanging out. This one pops up on my recommended a lot
anyone noticed that this guy is from the '86 too he just came from the past to make the video knowing that algorithm would have take this footage to 4 mln people, so kind.

pay attention people,so far one of the only vids where someone starts a 500 in runners without hurting his foot.
Greg Or Jentr
Only girls get sore feet starting bikes.500 men only.
It might hurt but he
takes it like a man
He also looks like hes over 6ft. I had to lean them against a wall to start from cold. Also they lose compression very quickly when raced.
Simon Templecombe ummmm you sure about that,,,, I know a few girl's at out club, 5000000 bucks you would not get past them here's one for you...

Started 'walking' my old Huskies to save the ankle pain but the kick start was on the other side.
Truly old school.
Thanx for your msg
its a two stroke the compression and combustion are the same stroke.
PowerBand on those is scary.runnin good.
These bikes has sucky weak ignition. That's the problem. Not the compression.
