from the comments on this video it's easy to tell that a lot of these posters have no first hand experience with a CR500. They are HARD to start and foul plugs very easily at low speeds with the stock jetting. A smaller pilot jet will clean up the bottom and virtually eliminates the fouling but they are still very hard to start. I think the problem is in the kick start ratio Honda chose for this engine to make it easier to start. It kicks over very easily especially for a big with this displacement unfortunately you don't get enough revolutions, making it hard to start. Once started there is nothing like it except maybe a KX500. In the desert, this is my favorite bike of all time to ride. There is nothing more exciting than having a bike that will pull 4th gear wheelies in a sand wash by simply twisting the throttle.....
@@jetstream454 if they don’t have an accelerator pump, it’s all in the head. When you see am older Harley getting pumped, it’s actually squirting fuel into the carb, like a car did. Pumping a bike without a pump is like pump fuel injection, nothing is squirting anywhere. Perhaps your slide is sticking up a little and the pumping is closing it back where it should be. If not, there is no other explanation as nothing is accomplished from it.
I always remember my dad showing me how to start his BSA 650 twin in his slippers😂, I was impressed to say the least. I also managed to master kick starting the beast as a young boy but I didn't take the slipper route
know a dude named Anthony from a cr500 group on facebook who has videos of him kicking over a freshly built 87 wearing a pair of sandals haha it's pretty ballsy.
I had a 86 Cr 500. I was in Slave Lake Alberta in a motor cycle shop and they had one. I asked if I could start the bike. He said if you can start it wearing those shoes you can take it for the weekend. It fired first kick. They all looked at me like I was a god. Needless to say I took it for a rip. @@Whiplover105 nice. Ya I’ve got the 86 with the tiny lever, I tried one of the newer style ones on my bike, but it didn’t clear the pipe. I don’t know if you’ve seen my video of my 86, but I mention how inconvenient it is. Thanks for the info!
@@alexlas yes I've seen it and I know well that problem, that's why I've changed the oem lever on my 87. Unfortunately that lever is no longer available as a new oem TM spare parts and the newer ones are longer, you'll have the same situation of the 89-01 cr 500 lever hitting the pipe. 😉

That is the most MORONIC statement for how to start a 2 stroke anything, You need a 4 stroke because you obviously know nothing about 2 stroke, that fuel goes where after it passes through the reed assembly?
+Verva Music thanks a lot, of course the bike and his engine are on top of the shape, had a totally rebuilt in 2012 and run for 10 hours since that. I love this bike and I think it's one of the best motocross bikes ever built!! ;)

Old I know , but I’m ALWAYS amazed at people pumping the throttle on carbs that don’t have a pump. It does exactly nothing.
Carb slide can stick from gummed up oil and gas, just making sure it’s sliding correctly
I seem to have an easier time starting my carbed bikes from cold after a couple pumps
Gotta choke er
