I inherited my grandpas sks and mak 90 i just recently looked into both guns and its pretty impressive and both have thumb holes the mak 90 and sks wooden stocks
Some of the SKS-D Models would go into an uncontrollable FULL-AUTO mode as Century Arms had a recall on them & the California Attorney General (Locklear) had an SKS "BUY back" on those M model SKS Rifles!
The best rifle one ever owned, with a 100 round drum you can't go wrong. Also mine was a mak 90 and the barrel wasn't modified and it also had the original stock and woodworking on it. Still beautiful til this day.
My Norinco star is on the underside in front of the magwell. It's a straight cut receiver. I pulled off my factory wood and stored it safely and "modified" some AKM/WASR10 wood to fit and make it look more old school.
These mak -90 are precious. The price of these rifles have gone way up in value. So don’t get rid of yours. Last time I heard they were selling for $2000 Up😅
I have 5 that I bought in '92 for $100 each, along with 4 SKS's (two trad barrel length with bayonets and two paratroopers), all still in cosmoline, never fired, for $90 each. Have all the slings, Chinese oil / cleaner combo bottles, flash suppressors, and numerous magazines. Glad I held on to them...one of my better investments.
I bought mine in the 1990s, it has a wooden thumb hole stock ,that I don't find too be particularly comfortable but to be fair I never fired it ,it's still in new in box condition. I dont remember what I paid for it back then but I'm glad that I bought it when I did
MAK-90 owner for over 20 years. I've put thousands of rounds through it, when you could have a case of ammo shipped to your door for ~$100, and never had a misfire, ftf, fte, etc, etc. Pull the trigger and bang. It's my shtf gun, too. If you had to bury it under some dirt and brush in a ravine, there's a high level of confidence it will function when you pull it out and need to use it. An AR15, not so much.
Ive had mine for 30 years, NORINCO MAK-90, ive updated the stocks and added a rail for Red Dot/Assault Scope Love the Quality of construction, and i have the Stainless Steel Barrel and charger
@@veteranpatriot4474 I'd trade away a wasr-10 for a mak 90 any day of the week. I suppose if you're on a budget then a wasr is better than nothing but there is no way in hell it's on the same level as a mak 90.
I have a Mak 90 with original thumb hole wood furniture. I love this rifle. My Son thought it would be cool to redo the furniture to make it like a Russian AK. I think I will keep it as is, I think this weapon will only rise in value as is. What do you think?
I got into AKs in the mid 80s. I originally owned Maadis amd Norincos. That was all that was available at the time. (Yes, there were the rare Valmets) I've owned just about every make and model since...... Bulgarian, Romanian, Russian, East German, and a number of others. I always come back to the Chinese for durability and quality. Hands down those are my favorite and best AKs. I think a lot of the negativity towards Chinese AKs in the early 90s was due to the general low quality of other Chinese products that were being sold at the time. What many didn't realize back then, was that China and the PLA were trying to raise money quickly and selling milspec rifles based on the stock they had on hand.
The only problem I have is mine didn't come with a siderail mount I have on my WASR. That greatly enhances accuracy and the ultimak rail on the handguard sucks in comparison. The Mak 90 is put together really well, but I have the most rounds of any rifle I own through my WASR. It has never failed once. It eats everything and asks for seconds. Pretty much all major makes of AKM's are bet your life on reliable.
My polytech milled mak90 has markings quite different than what you described here. Just so folks know they aren't all the same. One of my first guns and damn do I love it.
Another good video, the Russian Ak is great but it actually has a modified Ak74 bolt. The Bulgarian Slr107 is a real Akm.I've had both but kept the Russian for the value.
My wife bought me my Mak90 for my 40th birthday, 24 years ago. (With the guidance of a good friend) it is my favorite weapon and hers also. I believe she paid $300. Score. 😜
I'm a fan of the MAK-90 and AKs. But in all fairness, the range in the military probably didn't lube the M16s you guys shot, which explains why there were reliability problems. You implied that you have no combat experience with the M16. When lubricated (even when not cleaned), it's a reliable weapon.
Some of the problems with the nam era ARs congress tried to cut the price by not chrome lining the barrels, also some of the ammo used caused dirty fouling!
I'm prior service Army Vietnam Era and the AK has always been Far more reliable than the M-16/AR-15 unless you keep the M-16 clean ALL THE TIME. that's why SEAL TEAMS in Vietnam would ONLY USE STONER 63 Rifles, or AKs cuz M-16s weren't reliable enough for them. The only reason the M-16 was given to regular grunts was Colt Bribed Defense Secretary Robert McNamara to make the M-16 the Service Weapon, while the AR-18 was invented by the same guy (Eugene Stoner) who invented the AR-15, M-16, AR-18 & the AR-10. The AR-18 was a much more reliable rifle compared to the M-16, but the Japanese Howa Company acquired the rights to the AR-15 & wouldn't sell them to the US Army because they didn't agree with the US involvement in Vietnam.
I bought mine in 1995 and paid like $190 for it and yes I only wish I would have bought 10 of them. Mine hasn't been fired since then, no more than 150 rounds went through it and they do have a good trigger for an AK.
I was wondering about adding attachments to it.i noticed you changed out the loop hole stock.Im looking to do the same.I really wonder about is adding some sights??.Love that long shooting.
Here's a better question. My Mak 90 is in beatiful shape. I am loath to have a gunsmith mod it because I would kick myself if he screwed it up. I don't like the mounts above the gas tube. If you wanted a red dot on it, what would you do? I want to keep it as pristine as possible.
This is a great question. My personal belief is AKs should be iron only lol but I do have an answer for you if you really have to have an optic. Sun Optics USA has a scope/optics piece that should be easy to add to your Mak. Little to no tampering. Maybe try this out and red dot away
Thanks for the great info. I have a chance to get a MAK90 from a dealer that got in a few months ago, however they are asking $1K for it with the crapola thumb hole stock. Would you pay that much with all the other variants out there? Also if I do get it where is the best place to get replacement butt stocks and higher capacity mags for it? Thanks.
Thats a tough one. If its 1k, then I would buy if for collecting purposes because they are the best! However, if you're getting it for SHTF then I'd try to find one for cheaper or even for a wasr 10
Thank you very much for responding. The wife told me to get anyway and don't mod it, yeah she's a keeper after 33 yrs. The dealer also has a Wasr 10, my son really likes his, so I may get both just for the heck of it if they will deal on the pair. Thanks again, RP.
good advice but when the SHTF i want the best weapon money can buy or I can afford....You might not get a chance to sell or appreciate your valuable collection. What's more important a chinese made rifle or your life?
If it has the square back receiver, then u can put a Chinese stock set to get it back to its old glory , and what is the reason there is no auto pencil importer inscribed on the back of the receiver
Wow I have forgotten how much these things have increased in value. I checked Armslist (second hand market) and I have seen them as high as $1900. I paid $350 for mine brand new 5 years ago lol
Great Rifle. Superb bluing fit and finish! Double hooked with smooth take up and let off! Have the Poly Tech Legend MAK 91 and BWK chambered for 5.56x45 others...
Nice gun, but unfortunately, you got the one without the cleaning rod, or threaded barrel. The ones with the welded lug over the threads can be cut off, so you can put a brake on it
@@vlogmoor mac 90 without the break has a hell of a recoil that throws the rifle up to the right. Yours is nice but a break and a traditional stock will put you in the game and you'll thank yourself if shit his the fan..
I have an Arsenal SGL 21-61 Russian manufactured AK-47 and love it to death. I have hunted with it and shoot 2 to 3" groups with routine at 100 yds using Tula Wally World ammo. If I had to choose another AK it would be a Norinco or Polytech. I remember the folding bayonet Ak's at gun shows and I also remember the awesome Chinese ak with the side folding stock that was the 1 I always wanted. remember it from when I was like 14 or 15. Anyway, I have a Russian Ak so good enough. Most prolific rifle of all time...
It fetches a higher price as they’re usually milled receivers and harder to come by. It’s a great AK. I’d still prefer a stamped receiver as it has more flex in the frame and will usually last slightly longer but I’d never say no to a milled! You have a great rifle that is going for up to $2500 or more online!
Zastava M-70 doesn't have a Chrome-lined barrel = so you need to clean them RIGHT AFTER SHOOTING THEM, especially if you use Corrosive Steel core Ammo.
Vlog thank you for your very informative comments on the chinese ak .I own the Norinco AK type-56 with a folding over and under stock in which I bought in 1989 and shot it 2 to 3 times and about 300 t0 400 rounds rapid fire and never jammed one time.Bought around 400.00 out the door . After I purchased it about 2 to 3 years later it when for 1000 dollars because of the President Bill Clintons gun control measures. The price of the weapon shot up to 1000 dollars and people were still buying them until thy ran out.I cant hardly wait to go and fire this gun again.I recently about 4 years ago purchased IO AK47 and have never fired it and I didnt know about all the negative reviews on it.In fact after I bought it the magazine would not fit in the receiver .I am afraid to fire it and I am not sure how to get rid of it. There life warranty is bogus and supposed to be the better model made in North Carolina and was made at there new plant in Palm Bay FL. I called there phone number about the mag. that didnt fit and there was no answer no voice mail. Please if possibile give me some advice thank you. Also I was happy to subscribe to your channel.
Have you looked at the prices the MAK-90 is commanding now? Check out Gunbroker and others then you will see that even though his price was absurd when compared to the '90's that's a lower price in today's market if you truly want a MAK-90. Heck, I'm trying to negotiate down from $1K on one and may even pass to save up for an Arsenal SAM7 to have access to a side mount optics rail or Vepr. I may even say screw it for these high priced AK's and just continue shooting our 2 matching # Norinco SKS's. Mine was bought nib decades ago for $129.00 & hers a few years ago for $300.00.
Rude Dawg There was a guy who picked a pre ban norinco underfolder up for 179 bucks back in the 90s. Aks are going up like crazy now. Im keeping my eye out for a sgl31/slr104fr and its tough to find one
Anything Norinco are a collectors item. Norinco makes thier guns out of train tracks. There 1911’s are also great. The only issue is the magazine but you can use a Wilson Combat and it works like a champ.
@@vlogmoor I have herd. Norinco also makes the Hawk Shotgun which is a Remington 870 Clone. And they make a way cool double barrel shotgun. The only thing I don’t like about the Norinco double barrel shotgun is the ridiculous tang safety . But either then that it brings about the old west of the 19th century.
I have a ?????? Need help identifying on the serial number it has a triangle with a six six in it and then it goes to 7 5 and below that has the caliber 7.62 x39 and the Norinco is in a circle with a triangle like in the middle of it more like the pointer on your GPS map of you your location so what the hell is it please help me identify
I must correct a few things you said in this video. Not trying to be critical or anything, i am just saying. The MAk-90s were imported from 1989 until 1994 when the first assault gun ban (a ban that mainly banned imports) took affect. Most of the MAK-90s that are marked like yours "sport" were made in the later years as "sport" models, to keep the import status. Most of the "Sport" models had slightly shorter barrels again to be granted "import" status. My MAK-90 doesn't even say anywhere on it "MAK-90". It does say "NHM90", has a threaded muzzle and in the box had a muzzle break. The three 5 round magazines included in the brand new box turned out to be short 10rd magazines. It bears the Norinco star, made in China stamp, has 6 digit serial number, has CSI ONT CA, the gun ammo type (7.62x39), all on left side of rifle forward of magazine. The year designation came later in production, hence why yours serial starts with "94". My model has also a chrome lined barrel, duel hook trigger (supposed to be the smoothest), thumb hole stock (yuk) LOL and barrel that is around 2 inches longer than a standard AK-47. MAK-90s that were in the USA when the ban took affect were "grand fathered" and allowed to be sold until gone. Your is probably one of those. I bought my MAK-90 in 90 or 91. During the few years they were imported and sold, the ATF made revisions to the policy of import before the eventual ban. it seems like every 6 months there were new rules. The first to go was the AK style stocks (birth of the thumb hole stock) including folding stocks). Second was the bayonet. Third was the bayonet lug. Forth were muzzle brakes. Some were still threaded but had a piece of pipe spot welded, of which fell off after it being fired awhile. Fifth was the muzzle brake threading altogether. The MAK-90s were based on the type 56 Chinese AKs (The type 56 AKs were the first made with stamped receivers to save weight and cost, "Chinese innovation". Later was adopted by Russia). Over the few years of import, there were many slight variants (based on when they were imported, by who imported them and changes that had to be made prior to sale). Some of these variants are rare and interesting. Many of the changes made were done in china (before shipping) at the factory. However, if the rules changed while they were in transport many times they were sold as is.
I sold mine years ago. It had a closed stock, not the pistol grip stock. I found it poorly made compared with the more refined Chinese Polytech made variant. My Mac 90 would sometimes fire several rounds at once, as if it was on full auto. Glad I sold it.
is the type 81 we get in canada better? since i read it is a newer rifle and was supposed to be an improvr it i ordered the side folder. what do you think of it?
Type 81 is an improvement over the type 56. But China dumped it for their Bullpup type 95 Rifle in 5.8x42mm that you see as a type 99 Bullpup in Canada in 5.56 NATO caliber.
I have a mak90 without the thumb hole is it legal or illegal thinking of getting the orginal thumb hole for it or maybe synthetic furniture and I got the rifle with two 30rd mags steel mags not plastic any info will help it's my first mak
tony b Wow! I bought a brand new straight cut in 1994 for $250. Now it looks like a Type 56 because I made it 922r compliant. I still have original parts though:)
@ tony - your prices are pretty inaccurate. I bought my Mak 90 slant cut for $690 last year. On armslist, you can still find them now, standard Mak 90s way under a $1000 (slant or straight cut) many listed between $700-$850 all day. Just checked.
Aren't you referring to the WASR-10, not an Rh10? If you're speaking of a WASR-10 they're generally more accurate than a Chinese AK, and the WASR-10 has a scope rail that the MAK-90 doesn't. Overall the Chinese AKs are more reliable than Romanian AK-47s because the Chinese use thicker receivers & "double-hook" triggers for a smoother trigger pull & more reliable weapon.
The SAR-1, SAR-2 & SAR-3 were more accurate than the Norinco AKs and had scope rails on the side that Chinese AKs (except for a few Poly-Tech National Match) PreBan (before 1990 import).
They were milled at 1.5 mm to sustain heavy fire in guerrilla warfare, they manufactured them when they expected Russia to invade them in the 80's and they wanted a tride and true weapon. They succeeded in their goal
@@bradymorris7721 I’ve told people time and time again. The Mak 90 has the thickest receiver of all AKs. I’ve never seen one crap the bed and I would take it over every other AK variant ever made

ALOT. The MAK90s are the most common Chinese variants. Personally the MAK would be a beater, but the pre ban Chinese variants are the ones to own and drool over.
After handling just about every type of import ak I would take a PSA ak over all of them and it’s made right here at home. Yugo are loose and junkie that came from century arms the wasr10 from them is not much better and the norincos were the first type I ever held and the best feeling out of the import world but for the original price you could never beat them. But still PSA is making high quality full body piercers right here at home no need to hunt down a gun half the quality for double the price.

I have only put 875 rounds through mine since new. Solid performer. Mine does not have the star. It is a Norinco. But very little markings on it.
Bought my MAK 90 in '93 for $250. In 24 years it has never malfunctioned. Not one single time.

Amazed that you still have it after all these years. Should have bought two. Lol
ray hanes I wish I would have bought ten
Ive had mine for 30 years, NORINCO MAK-90, ive updated the stocks and added a rail for Red Dot/Assault Scope
Love the Quality of construction, and i have the Stainless Steel Barrel and charger
New to aks here but can you still buy these?
I Love my milled Arsenal AK47 a lot, but I would love to own a MAK90 and a PolyTech, but being retired and on a fixed income, I doubt if I ever will.
True. I love my MAK 90. I'm real close to 5k rounds with 0 malfunctions.
My Dad was telling how he got a ton of flak for acquiring one of these back in the day.
I dont own a mak90 I do own a type 56 and by far its my best gun action is smoothe like butter and never fails but I'm sure these are the same way
Wasr-10 has a chrome lined barrel.my type 56 is not as accurate as my wasr.
Jack low you know accuracy changes from gun to gun. You can have 5 AKs of the same make and same year and accuracy can be different from each rifle.
Personally I'm a WASR 10 fan myself after the Russians of Course, Then I put Norinco.
Just My opinion.
Is the wasr barrel thicker then arsenal?
Ok poor
@@veteranpatriot4474 I'd trade away a wasr-10 for a mak 90 any day of the week. I suppose if you're on a budget then a wasr is better than nothing but there is no way in hell it's on the same level as a mak 90.
I got one for $600 with 2 30 round magazines and 102 bullets a few months ago
You stole that AK = super good deal !!!
$1200 for a milled in March of 2021. I’ll never let it go.
Picking up a milled mak from my uncle $650 with 500 rounds march '22. Gotta love family
I have a Mak 90 with original thumb hole wood furniture. I love this rifle. My Son thought it would be cool to redo the furniture to make it like a Russian AK. I think I will keep it as is, I think this weapon will only rise in value as is. What do you think?
I’m certainly not changing the furniture on my Mak 90!
Same as mine. I have a milled one.
Another good video, the Russian Ak is great but it actually has a modified Ak74 bolt. The Bulgarian Slr107 is a real Akm.I've had both but kept the Russian for the value.
I loved my Mak 90 sporter, best firearm I ever owned hands down
@@bradymorris7721 I still believe it’s the best AK variant hands down too!
My wife bought me my Mak90 for my 40th birthday, 24 years ago. (With the guidance of a good friend) it is my favorite weapon and hers also. I believe she paid $300. Score. 😜
Love mine added flash hider slide stock tac scope
Mine has thumbhole stock so I might as well change the handgaurds if I go with a minimalist and a grip
I paid $179. for the stamped model and $279. For the milled model.
I love mine. i think I bought it in '93 or '94 for $350. since then I changed the stock out and had the muzzle threaded. m
I bought mine in 1995 and paid like $190 for it and yes I only wish I would have bought 10 of them. Mine hasn't been fired since then, no more than 150 rounds went through it and they do have a good trigger for an AK.
phenomenal video my man! can you do another video and talk about some other types like the bulgarian and the egyptian ones?
Egyptian Maadi AKs while looking like an actual Soviet AKM, we're very poorly built and I had to repair a lot of them for my AK customers.
I love the bluing.
Would you take this over a preban colt ar15? Both go for around same price in Massachusetts preban!
Think the video pretty much clarified this
I was wondering about adding attachments to it.i noticed you changed out the loop hole stock.Im looking to do the same.I really wonder about is adding some sights??.Love that long shooting.
No Problem!!! You're lucky that your better half helped you to make the decision! Glad I could of be of assistance.
good advice but when the SHTF i want the best weapon money can buy or I can afford....You might not get a chance to sell or appreciate your valuable collection. What's more important a chinese made rifle or your life?
@@vlogmoor I FOUND ONE LAST WEEK, HAD JUST WATCHED YOUR VIDEO!! I JUMPED DEAD ON IT. THE BEST QUALITY...WOW...
No post ban era AK was great. The 56s/84s series are pretty decent. Gotta have the muzzle brake, bayonet lug, and no butt hole stock.
Not every Mak90 has the star stamp.
Funny! I bought mine back in 1990 for $189
If it has the square back receiver, then u can put a Chinese stock set to get it back to its old glory , and what is the reason there is no auto pencil importer inscribed on the back of the receiver
Where is the best place to get a standard AK butt stock?? Don't care for the thumb hole and would like to change it. Thanks
My local AK specialty shop has one of these on the wall right now for $1200. What do these normally go for these days?
Wow I have forgotten how much these things have increased in value. I checked Armslist (second hand market) and I have seen them as high as $1900. I paid $350 for mine brand new 5 years ago lol
$1200 is actually a good price for 2023 & you should JUMP on that price.

Beautiful rifle man, Chinese are my Fav As Well!
Great Rifle. Superb bluing fit and finish! Double hooked with smooth take up and let off! Have the Poly Tech Legend MAK 91 and BWK chambered for 5.56x45 others...
I feel you I have 2 different variants of the Chinese 84S narinco chambered in 556
5.56 Chinese AK Mags are next to impossible to find & when you do find them = BIG $$$$ !!!
Paid $220 for mine and I felt robbed. Bought it at Miami police supply back in 93’.
You "SCORED" getting an MAK-90 for $220, as wholesale was $169 that soon went to $200.
Nice gun, but unfortunately, you got the one without the cleaning rod, or threaded barrel. The ones with the welded lug over the threads can be cut off, so you can put a brake on it
My barrel isn’t threaded, but it did come with a cleaning rod. I prefer the rifle stay the way it is personally.
@@vlogmoor mac 90 without the break has a hell of a recoil that throws the rifle up to the right. Yours is nice but a break and a traditional stock will put you in the game and you'll thank yourself if shit his the fan..
@@aligetts5361they're actually "Muzzle Brakes", not "Breaks", as a "Muzzle Brake" acts like a "brake" on the recoil.
I have one for sale this month
..2 bidders so far....let me know....jd104dawin@gmail.com
Russian AKs are FAR MORE ACCURATE than any Chinese AK.
The other way to identify the MAK90 is it has that but ugly pistol grip/but stock combo...
My goal is to get an underfolding norinco spiker. Not even 1 out of 100aks is a spiker.
Spiker AKs are usually Poly-Tech AKs in the US.
I have a slant cut Poly Technologies MAK-90... what’s the story on it versus the Norinko MAK-90?
It fetches a higher price as they’re usually milled receivers and harder to come by. It’s a great AK. I’d still prefer a stamped receiver as it has more flex in the frame and will usually last slightly longer but I’d never say no to a milled! You have a great rifle that is going for up to $2500 or more online!
I love this gun but my favorite is the zastava m70 have you ever owned one?
Zastava M-70 doesn't have a Chrome-lined barrel = so you need to clean them RIGHT AFTER SHOOTING THEM, especially if you use Corrosive Steel core Ammo.
Have a new MAK 90 . Never been chambered. ID says Norinco with the star. Thumb hole stock
@@LarryCrane-m8d lucky you!
*WOW* is that a full auto notch dimple on the side of the receiver? between safe and semi auto?
It has to be a rivet filling the 3rd hole not a "dimple".
Ray Slack thanks for your support Ray!
Great Video Wish I would have bought more back in the day for the $190.00 I paid for my MAK-90 A great weapon for the price!
Ok thanks I just picked up a stamped straight cut for $840 with six mags
Liberty First straight cut receivers are a bit more desirable.

You never mention BULGARIAN SLR 95's great rifle imported around the same time as the chicoms. Tough as nails and a better finish.
Looks fierce with a 75 round drum!

Where can I find that stock or a similar one
Tapps47 on my MAK 90 all’s it says is MAK 90 you have an answer? No Sporter or hunter
@@jakobthomas5813 , Hi. What is the serial numbers (I need the first 4 only)?
I sold mine years ago. It had a closed stock, not the pistol grip stock. I found it poorly made compared with the more refined Chinese Polytech made variant. My Mac 90 would sometimes fire several rounds at once, as if it was on full auto. Glad I sold it.
is the type 81 we get in canada better? since i read it is a newer rifle and was supposed to be an improvr it
i ordered the side folder. what do you think of it?
Type 81 is an improvement over the type 56. But China dumped it for their Bullpup type 95 Rifle in 5.8x42mm that you see as a type 99 Bullpup in Canada in 5.56 NATO caliber.
I have a mak90 without the thumb hole is it legal or illegal thinking of getting the orginal thumb hole for it or maybe synthetic furniture and I got the rifle with two 30rd mags steel mags not plastic any info will help it's my first mak
Yeah I seen one without the markings it had mak 90 sorter and made in China about how much do one of these cost today
How much money ? For one to pay more something than one sold something for is a kick in the ass .
Love your videos and question what do you think about the Rh10 century arms ak47 ? I would like to know an expert opinion.
Only Milled Russian and Bulgarian AKs in the USA used the reliable Double-hook triggers in non-Chinese (Warsaw Pact) AKs.
The SAR-1, SAR-2 & SAR-3 were more accurate than the Norinco AKs and had scope rails on the side that Chinese AKs (except for a few Poly-Tech National Match) PreBan (before 1990 import).
i bought my for 139.00,I just wish I could find a way to put a red dot on it since my eye sight it's no longer there
Ditto, there are several quality optics rails for the MAK-90. Just do a google search.
Where did you purchase the replacement stock for your MAK-90? What brand is the stock, I would like to get one to put on my MAK90.
Thank you
It's a Dragnov stock. They are usable with most AKs. Check out Bud's gun shop! Happy hunting!
They were milled at 1.5 mm to sustain heavy fire in guerrilla warfare, they manufactured them when they expected Russia to invade them in the 80's and they wanted a tride and true weapon. They succeeded in their goal

I’ve heard rumors that the PSA makes one heck of an AK
