Mine was black, sold it about 18 years ago, and, was smoking the same ... Great bike, better in black, but always great sound. Specially with the original exhaust, like this red one. Wish you lots of good fun with the bike.
My third bike was a '75 GT 550, solid as a rock and a sound like no other. The PO had paid for a very good quality custom paint job on the fuel tank, a giant marijuana leaf..inlaid on iradescent pearl white..Hah! Between my first bike, '69 T500 my third the GT and my fourth a '77 Kawasaki KH 400 I owned some true classics in the making without even knowing it...Doh! Anyway those were the days, we were dirt poor but these were easily affordable and attainable. By todays standards they were crude but that didnt stop any of us from riding them every week day and all weekend!
My first street legal was a 75. Really fast. I loved how it blew smoke rings when I started it on a cold morning. Mt GT550 was fully dressed with faring and hard bags and an 8 track stereo and I drove mine from coast to coast. Of coarse now I drive Harleys and BMWs.
Da bin ich fast sprachlos, eine quasi neue Suzuki GT 500, wow. Die Arbeit hat sich mehr als gelohnt. Ich habe in meinem ganzen Leben lediglich 2 gesehen, ein paar mehr GT 380 und nur einmal einen Wasserbüffel. Wünsche Dir viel Freude mit dem Prachtstück.
I bought one of these back in 1983 for only £100 and ok it was a bit of a wreck but it stillran. It was mainly cosmetics that needed attention, such as a good clean, an oil changeand a repaint of the fuel tank. These old Suzuki's were very well built and took a lot ofabuse and neglect before they bit the dust.

its a two stroke matey that wont have run properly in donkeys years they all SMOKE excessively at that age. ,cleaning out 40 odd year old exhaust pipe internals with caustic soda baths is the only way to stop excessive smoking on these old bus's today , they will be full of old two stroke oil and it SMOKES !! its usually the lst thing people think about also when restoring these ,
Meine klang ähnlich. Hab dann die Zylinder auf 1. Übermaß schleifen lassen und passende Kolben eingebaut und dann war Ruhe. Meine hat aber auch Gußzylinder und keine Nikasil Zylinder.

just restored a GT185, those GT550 is hard pressed to find. You did a amazing job on this one.

I had a gt 380 and I loved the sound. The best part was the deeper growl when air got sucked in at the beginning, then the engine screams!
I remember that deep growl - even though that was a long time ago, 1976 !
I had a choice between a GT380 or T500 and picked the bigger bike, but I later realized the 380 would have been better for the city.

Brilliant! I certainly miss that sound and of course the smell of unburned, smokey blue fossil fuels spewing out of the exhausts!
I know a old guy who has one of these bikes in his house, the bike is totally standard but would need restored, he will not sell what a waste
