I got a Ryco with a thread that was too long caused oil to spray everywhere. Rubbish since they stopped making them in Australia. (Filter was still flush with the rubber but the seal was not good only a few threads long)
My sister in law worked for decades at the Ryco oil filter factory in Melbourne. She was laid off when they moved production to China about 15 years ago I think.
I like that Ryco filter. The Subaru filter looks like the typical auto manufacturor type filter. The Ryco just looks better made. Nice Job Pete, thanks to Paul because it must have cost a few dollars to ship that filter. Hey Pete, you are an international TH-cam star!

Based on the construction, I would take the Ryco with its metal endcaps, coil spring (my preference) and silicone anti-drainback valve over the Fram/Honeywell-sourced Subaru filter. It looks like Subaru in the United States is moving away from the blue filters back to those made by Tokyo Roki (15208AA12A replaced by 15208AA100) although they may be made in Indonesia instead of Japan.
Jeff I would agree. As far as I've seen, I believe Fram/Honeywell is the only manufacturer that uses the fiber end caps. It used to be years ago that alot of people preferred OEM...now you pay for the OEM name and whoever they farm it out to.

Hi Pete, Great video! Never heard of a Ryco oil filter. Subaru filter looks like the standard fram style filter with fibre end caps. Happy Labor day weekend!
In Australia Ryko and Repco Filters are available from nearly all Autoparts Stores. Ryko Filters are also used in nearly all Garages. For Subaru " Loyalist " stick with OEM other wise Ryko does the Job and use Good Quality Synthetic Oil. Good Comparision between a product that's made in USA vs Product sold in Australian Auto Part Stores.
I'm a big fan of the rounded or circular edged gaskets. Unless the gasket is large, I've had one non-rounded edge leak oil after 6 months. Not a big deal but it happened in my driveway, during December, and up north in the Upper Midwest USA. I replaced it with an original Toyota filter and had no further leaks.
here in NZ Ryco is def the market leader, but they're mega-overpriced, retail is around 20 to 30 dollars... I order from overseas and get Japan-made filters and end up paying less even with shipping -- massive markups
Why is that the OEM always seems to use nitrile rubber ADVs instead of silicone? Cost savings or do most manufacturer’s engineers think silicone is just overkill?
Ryco looks like another Premium Guard. Same color bypass valve and endcaps like the Proformer. Also the Microgard Select but doesn't have the silicone gasket.
Could you do a review and give an opinion on a GKI regular, not the synthetic, oil filter, there $4.00 in Canada,it looks similar to the deso filter from China, But GKI regular filter has less pleats I think ?
Definitely the RYCO because that Subaru USA filter is just a blue "orange can of death FRAM " painted blue ,I probably just stick with the OEM black Subaru filters that are made in Japan
Thanks, Pete and Paul. Either your hands have grown a lot, or those are some tiny filters. 😂. The Ryco filter won hands down to me. Fiber ends caps are just plain cheap.
I get my subaru engines confused, but I know the 2.0 requires a filter that higher psi before the bypass valve opens. I know Wix came out with a filter thst has this higher psi bypass valve. I would take the Ryco over the Sub filter as long as it met the psi specs of the engine
The subaru filter looks a little like a fram ! I guess we could forgive the glob monster amount of glue in the center tube cause of the better glue ! I vote ryco the better filter ! 👍
Commenters on YT think that anything with metal endcaps is great. And people commenting on how shiny they are!🤣 Filter manufacturers could put a toilet paper roll in an empty coke can as long as it has those metal endcaps!

That's the cheap Ryco oil filter. Ryco also have the premium version which would be nice to compare.

JMHO, I'd say cost-saving.
Then again, most Motorcraft oil filters have silicone anti-drain back valves.
Hi friend watching now. You have alot of knowledge about cars👍

I like the Ryco Oil Filter over Subaru oil filter because the end caps are better. 🙂
As a Subaru owner myself I have to say that I’ve always wondered why Subaru doesn’t specify a silicone anti-drain back valve.
The subaru filter is a fram orange can of death in disquiese. I wouldn't use it. The Ryco is a better filter in every aspect imo. Thanks Whip👍

both of them - piece of crap

Any chance getting the premium syntec version of the Ryco filter? Those ones come with synthetic filter media and higher build quality
