    This is a great side by side. There's probably really good reasons for Toyota speccing the smaller filter (ok, most likely cost!) but things like pressure drop and packaging.
    I've noticed a couple of times that an OE filter is smaller (only 1/4" or so) than some aftermarkets...

    Great video! I like the larger filters, but I’m sure it really doesn’t matter as under normal conditions and reasonable oil change intervals the smaller filters are never clogged to a restrictive level. I do not believe there is a problem with this type of filter construction as the amount of sealant is such that the ends are well sealed on the baseplate and the spring plate/bypass valve. I look forward to your upcoming “light test”. We will know for sure if my assumptions are correct or not! Have a great day.

    Hey Pete, just wondering if you've ever cut open a K&N Gold filter? Just watched engine masters episode, they said it was one of the best filters they've tested (didn't compare it to a Fram Titanium or Synthetic Endurance sadly) but they kept talking about how well it flowed and how good the micron ratings where. Here's where it gets interesting, there's a big pressure relief valve rating difference too, 11-17psi on the gold vs 20-28psi on the select. That's unfortunately one thing that was never mentioned on the engine masters video, that if they were running a higher pressure it may not have been filtering anything! I'm wondering if you could do a comparison? Maybe between the Gold HP-2011 vs their select SO-2011? The Gold filter is almost $10 CAD more on summit racing. Would be a good shout-out. Thanks, and cheers from Ontario, Canada!

      That's not so much the actual pressure the oil is at, keep in mind that oil "pressure" is really the Flow being kinda choked back by all the small clearances it has to get shoved through, bearing clearance being one of them
      When you look at what the flow is doing inside the oil filter itself, both the in/out sides of the filter media usually see pretty similar total pressures, what the Bypass valve is actually there to do is if there's too much of a difference in flow as the oil is pushed through the media, like if it gets clogged up with dirt/varnish and the pump has to push harder to shove that oil through the paper,, that's when you actually start to see Pressure differential inside the filter itself 👍

    • @bluecranium
      @bluecranium 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@snoofayy6150 Well aware how a bypass valve works... The pressure differential at which the bypass valve opens depends on both the strength of the spring & the style of valve. If it doesn't open soon enough, a smaller engine's oil pump may not provide enough pressure to overcome the clogged filter & starve the engine by running at a lower pressure. I was asking if there was a way to MEASURE this pressure without having to build a setup like the "Brand Ranks" channel uses.

    @CharlesR.SteinruckIII 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The inlet hole size, shape, or number that are in the base plate conversations make me laugh. Case in point. Just watched the three AC filter video with the different years of production. Your comment that the filter with 13 holes would flow better. How? I have watched for a long time, and nobody is calling anybody on this. There is only so much oil that can flow into and out of the filter. The filter screws onto the inlet pipe. What is the inside diameter of that pipe? As long as the material drilled out of the base plate to create the holes exceeds the inside diameter of the pipe the filter screws onto will be the flow rate. If a filter has 6,8, or 13 round, oval, or elongated holes does not matter. It is simple hydraulics and restrictions. First restriction is the anti-drain back valve. The oil coming in hits it, has to make a 90 degree turn and is deflected towards the side of the can, filling the void, before it can start going through the filter media. Then the restriction of the center core is next before oil can flow into the center hollow area of the filter. Up to this point the volume of oil is allowed to run at a higher volume this one time, then it is forced to go into it inside diameter of the pipe that the filter is screwed onto. From that point flow is dictated by how much oil can flow through the inside diameter of that pipe The filter I am looking at has 6 15/64th holes. My filter screws onto the threaded pipe that has an inside diameter of 36/64ths. Do you need two more 15/64th hole so it will flow better? No. The 6 15/64th inlet holes exceeds what can flow into the 36/64th inch diameter pipe. Granted the more holes you have only reduces what has to pass through six holes. Still with addition of more holes in the base plate round or oval/elongated does not make the filter flow better.
