There is also the issue that it could be considered in court that because she was living there is was helping with her parents living and paying for rent and what not. This would cause her to lose the legal battle and most likely pay for all of the court fees including attorneys.

The IRS audited them and they get upset and bring it up all the time. My mom sued my dad for higher child support when she saw he married a someone else and had a different job. I just… my childhood suffered because of the financial illiteracy of the adults raising me. My folks were the type to say “we’ll take you to a job if ya get one!” And then when i got one they wouldn’t even take me to the interview. This stuff is so common, young adults trying to emerge from the shadows of their parents financial sins.

@Jake38nine Spanking done properly, out of love and not in anger is a very effective training tool for kids. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean that all of us who grew up with spankings as part of our training are mindless drones who only repeat what mom & dad told us. 😂 Almost everyone I know who was raised like me is well adjusted, hard working, and productive members of society. A FAR greater average of people raised like me are well adjusted and a positive part of society than the kids raised with this current culture of narcissism, entitlement, & laziness. The proof is in the pudding.

@Jake38nine And it’s interesting that you associate a weak natured inability to call out wrongs with spanking, you seem to think that it leads to a defeated, mindless attachment to authority.
A lot of people have a blindness when it comes to family that allows them to be taken advantage of, it has nothing to do whether or not they were spanked. You have an interesting, albeit limited, view of human nature.

"Can't get rid of your mom" - Oh to be so young and naive. Sure you can...as you get older you'll find that toxic family isn't worth trying to salvage. If my mom stole $3000 from me I think that would wind up leading to no contact unless it was paid back immediately. Hopefully she doesn't reveal to them that she's getting her finances in order because her mom will just wind up trying to leech more money off of her. Holding her moving back in over her head after stealing the money from her is incredibly toxic and terrible from a mother. Get her out of your life as it will lead to a lot less stress.

    • @kristine7304

That's true. Parents need to understand that their relationship isn't some kind of legal contract. Once you're 18, they need to respect you and treat you like a decent human would. The entitlement of some parents today boggles my mind. They think they can mistreat you and act however they want, and you have to love them "just because they're your mom". Unfortunately, society pressures us to always be there for them, but you don't have to be. If they knew that, maybe it would change how they treat you.

The mom situation is so difficult to navigate. Unfortunately, parents with narcissistic traits & poor money management can always take advantage of their children without any repercussions.
As someone who has also dealt with this problem, the only solution is to be completely separated financially from the parents. Move out, file independent for taxes, and possibly change your SSN.

I lived with my mother (father not in the picture) and she was financially abusive. If your mother does this constantly, yes you can leave them. It's so hard but you need to cut ties. I could get deeper into this but know that the light at the end of the tunnel IS THERE after the pain of cutting ties. Do not hold on to a rope that's hurting you more than helping either of you. My mother gave me no freedom. She would also be mad that money was in my bank account and not in there at the same time. She would constantly make me show her my account to "prove I'm broke as her" and God when I got my scholarship money. She basically took it, she refused to feed any of us including my little brothers who were 12 and 10 at the time. I had to pay 800 a month as "rent" by the time I left. And she wanted more. I even paid her phone bill after I left bc of guilty traps she would do. I'm now not talking to her and she's so sad that she's missing out of hanging out with her grandchildren. They deserve better. WE ALL deserve better.

When I went into the service I knew my mother and step fathers relationship was on the rocks. I don’t know all the details but while I was in boot camp, my ma stole $20k.
Iv contemplated suing her for many years but haven’t because she’s never been stable. I keep my distance now and only talk to her if shes going to pay me.. which is never. So yeah, every year I get the worst son ribbon.
I contemplated ending myself a few times but realized it’s not worth it. Iv been grinding every day since I made the decision to live but my respect has gone out the window. The hardest thing to understand is as a child is that your parent figures weren’t you going through school. They tried they’re best but traumatized each of my 6 siblings. Find your peace and cut the dead weight

Hang tight. Put it behind you and treat it all as lessons learned. Best to keep a distance and do well for yourself. Don’t let anyone make you feel guilty. Be strong in yourself and find your tribe- people that are supportive in your life and don’t bring in drama. Keep plugging away and things will pay off for you. Depression will pass and you won’t be so
Down on yourself. For many people, their parents are t what they wanted them to be. It’s best to accept it and move on. Bless you

Moving back for a little bit after school isn't unreasonable and it's not like she's not working... honestly she should still be living there until she has a emergency fund but I don't think that will happen. All in all her spending habits seem pretty in check and she looks like a really sweet person. Caleb throwing the boyfriends bank account under the bus though :D

Tell them that you need the money for gas to keep coming to see them because gas is so expensive. If you see your parents once a week, that will only take you just over a year.

I still live with my parents and pay all of their bills and my mom still expects me to "gift her some money just because" after everyone of my paychecks, and since I did it a few times at first out of gratitude, she has started a habit of asking me for a "gift" every other Friday knowing I got paid. It's definitely toxic but in my culture I'm my parents retirement plan so I definitely feel like I got manipulated into a bad situation with where I'm at now.

I was in a bit of a similar situation. I borrowed a large amount of money to my dad when I was young because he was under threat of losing his house. I've sat down and talked to him multiple times about getting a payment plan going and he might stick to it for a little bit and then just stop again. He'll find some kind of justification on why he can't or why he shouldn't have to pay it back. Eventually I just decided to give up because it's not worth the stress and effort of always pushing for it. It sucks but I just consider that money gone and I've learned my lesson never to borrow to family again.
