When I set up our ATEM Mini Pro ISO for the first time at the church last night, I was playing with PiP, and I noticed that it kept resetting my size and positions when hitting the hardware buttons. I was baffled but decided to look into it more today. Well, this afternoon, TH-cam said, "Hey, here's a video about using macros to customize PiP." Perfect (and scary) timing! Thank you, sir.

Just discovered these videos and I'm blown away by how easily you explain all of these concepts and how to use the ATEM. I've watched some others which use tons of additional software and really overcomplicate things. The ATEM is very powerful on its own and you are helping me to easily understand how to get the most out of it. Thank you.

Hi Alex - thank you for creating this video. If you happen to have used one of the pattern effects (I use the circle to frame my PiP sometimes), when using your suggested macro, it doesn't reset to using the DVE tab. I added an extra line to each PiP macro in the XML file to make sure the macro switches to the DVE tab: . I would like to see more macros for using green screen with PiP please... Keep up the good work, sir!

Certainly a useful idea for a bite sized series. I find the pace of your tutorials just about right and you make no assumptions. I hope you go on to look at the XML that sits behind the macros. I would appreciate a tutorial on macros involving hyperdeck studio mini. For example, is there a way to queue up the VT, play it then automatically cut or transition back to a camera?

This is extremely helpful as I get streaming up in a church setting where powerpoint is used. I want to have the PP slides show up as a PIP on the left 2/3 of the screen and the preacher framed in the right 1/3 of one of the cameras (simple framing of the camera, no magic to it.) This tutorial of yours is exactly what I need to set that up. What I haven't mastered yet is setting up macros to switch between the other cameras quickly. This might sound confusing, but I'll do my best. What I'd like is something that when I press a macro for Camera 1, it cuts to camera 1 with no PIP/Upstream key. If PIP is on, turn it off. If it's off, leave it off. Same for camera 3. If I go to Camera 2, I want it to bring it up with Camera 4 as the PIP source. I want all of this to work as cuts, not previews. So far, what I've tried only flips the state of the upstream key, so if I go from camera 1 to camera 3, it would turn PIP on since it was off, which I don't want. I suspect my solution might be in the xml file, but thought I'd trow it out as it looks like you are looking for a macro challenge and I'd love to see what you can come up with. When it's all done, I'll manage everything with an Elgato Stream Deck programed with the necessary macros.

    • @wasbeen

Rex Ryker yes, they work great. Need to use “Companion” app (version 2 if you have a new model Stream Deck) , ensure the Stream deck app is closed, run Companion and there are ATEM presets for Macros (that appears to use the description and not the name?).

Hi Alex. Superb work. Really enjoy this and Atem seems ideal for a channel idea I’m working on. It’s not been clear if the Atem can do split screen portrait, with two or three speakers - either live or via Skype/zoom or even FaceTime or what’s app video? That would be really helpful. So far I think you’ve just kept the landscape PIP. Also - is it possible to cut with an automated ‘follow the speaker’ set up? I’m guessing this needs a mixer - but what would you recommend? I’d like to achieve the best viewer experience but with the min of operational load - as I will be presenting and operating on my own a lot.. thanks?

Also, of course depends on your use case, but switching directly using 1-2-3-4 leaves CUT & AUTO to be used if you could re-map them, and personally I don’t use different transition times nor effects, either, so there are multiple buttons potentially usable for macro triggering for eg. in addition to the PiP buttons.

Alex, Thanks a lot for the informative video on Macros. Definitely, you have one of the best educational structural tutorial for the ATM.
I created a macro for camera 4, bottom right, for example. When I recall and run the macro, the position and the resizing work well from the software, except, that when I hit the Right Botton in the ATM Mini Pro ISO, everything goes back to the default state of the select camera. How to fix this? Or Am I be missing something here. I don't see the benefit of having four PIP camera buttons that don't record the resize action of the macro. Having to use the software every time to recall the size of the corner in the middle of a production seems to be combersome.

Great video Alex, one slightly off topic question it looks like you are using the RODE NT-USB Microphone and have BOTH the usb and audio connections plugged into it. Would I be correct in guessing that you are using the Audio connection to connect a USB powered mic to the ATEM Mini? Would be great if you are as that would allow me to get that mic and still use it with the ATEM's audio input rather than getting a condenser mic and a phantom power source. Thanks
