When I set up our ATEM Mini Pro ISO for the first time at the church last night, I was playing with PiP, and I noticed that it kept resetting my size and positions when hitting the hardware buttons. I was baffled but decided to look into it more today. Well, this afternoon, TH-cam said, "Hey, here's a video about using macros to customize PiP." Perfect (and scary) timing! Thank you, sir.
Just discovered these videos and I'm blown away by how easily you explain all of these concepts and how to use the ATEM. I've watched some others which use tons of additional software and really overcomplicate things. The ATEM is very powerful on its own and you are helping me to easily understand how to get the most out of it. Thank you.
Such a great video! You took me from no knowledge of macros to a solid understanding of them, all through the presentation of a gifted teacher. Thanks!
This is the best tutorial for the ATEM Mini/Pro that I've come across. Thanks Alex for being so informative, clear and concise. It is much appreciated.
Save Startup State! Been practicing on mine for a week and couldn't figure out why I had to keep restoring the file every time I turned it on. Invaluable information. Keep up the great training videos. Much appreciated.
FANTASTIC video Alex, calm manner, clear instructions and a 'what you may have done wrong' for when it's not doing what you expected. As a novice, you have given me the confidence to create some macros and give it a go!! As a result, my presentations will hopefully be better - thanks.
Alex, your presentation style is excellent. As a presenter myself, I get very frustrated sometimes at the lack of clarity and waffle in many TH-cam “tutorials”. This video is superb. I’m a new owner of an Atem Mini, and I use it very basically. Your presentation means that I can now do SO much more with it. Good luck and best wishes for all your future endeavours. Subscribed. Best regards, Richard.
Alex, you are an excellent teacher. Methodical and you have excellent visual aids. I am an audio guru, but I am just learning video and have a lot to learn. Your videos help me feel more confident quickly. Sincere thanks!
Hi Alex - thank you for creating this video. If you happen to have used one of the pattern effects (I use the circle to frame my PiP sometimes), when using your suggested macro, it doesn't reset to using the DVE tab. I added an extra line to each PiP macro in the XML file to make sure the macro switches to the DVE tab: . I would like to see more macros for using green screen with PiP please... Keep up the good work, sir!
Thanks Alex! I programmed and saved the Macros. B&H just shipped my Mini Pro ISO. Can't wait to try these on the ISO and see if Resolve picks up the PIPs as overlays in the timeline.
Certainly a useful idea for a bite sized series. I find the pace of your tutorials just about right and you make no assumptions. I hope you go on to look at the XML that sits behind the macros. I would appreciate a tutorial on macros involving hyperdeck studio mini. For example, is there a way to queue up the VT, play it then automatically cut or transition back to a camera?
Tim Cooper Thats Tim, this comment is super helpful to decide what episodes to produce next! Will be sure to include the Hyperdeck mini as your suggested :)
Hi Alex. Great tutorials! Macros.... can they be saved, exported and shared. I.e. imported and used on different machines? Has anyone started a macros library?
Alex, I've been using your teachings combined with Companion today and the results are stellar! Thank you for your clarity, and your lessons being so concise!
This was great. I was about ready to try doing my first macros. Now I can crib these. PIP was to be my first project. Second project; use USK for a repeatable green screen studio setup, use DSK to bring on 4 diff lower thirds on top.
Excellent and Resourceful! IDK why anyone would give it a thumbs down. There's always a Hater out there for us all!! Keep up the great work sir! SUBSCRIBED!!
This is extremely helpful as I get streaming up in a church setting where powerpoint is used. I want to have the PP slides show up as a PIP on the left 2/3 of the screen and the preacher framed in the right 1/3 of one of the cameras (simple framing of the camera, no magic to it.) This tutorial of yours is exactly what I need to set that up. What I haven't mastered yet is setting up macros to switch between the other cameras quickly. This might sound confusing, but I'll do my best. What I'd like is something that when I press a macro for Camera 1, it cuts to camera 1 with no PIP/Upstream key. If PIP is on, turn it off. If it's off, leave it off. Same for camera 3. If I go to Camera 2, I want it to bring it up with Camera 4 as the PIP source. I want all of this to work as cuts, not previews. So far, what I've tried only flips the state of the upstream key, so if I go from camera 1 to camera 3, it would turn PIP on since it was off, which I don't want. I suspect my solution might be in the xml file, but thought I'd trow it out as it looks like you are looking for a macro challenge and I'd love to see what you can come up with. When it's all done, I'll manage everything with an Elgato Stream Deck programed with the necessary macros.
Very cool. Thank you for a great tutorial. I didn't understand until I got one of these in my hands that it's a lot more than a simple switcher. The audio dynamics and EQ controls are very useful and now the world of macros!
You just sold me an atem mini. I hadn't bought it yet coz I needed this flexibility with pip. Thanks, mate. You're so chill, again, surrounded by all these redbulls ;p
Alex, do you have an Elgato Stream deck? I find macros SO much more useful with accessible buttons, but the setup had a few “gotcha’s” which would be good to show, and your viewers may appreciate your easy to understand teaching style.
Rex Ryker yes, they work great. Need to use “Companion” app (version 2 if you have a new model Stream Deck) , ensure the Stream deck app is closed, run Companion and there are ATEM presets for Macros (that appears to use the description and not the name?).
Hi Alex. Superb work. Really enjoy this and Atem seems ideal for a channel idea I’m working on. It’s not been clear if the Atem can do split screen portrait, with two or three speakers - either live or via Skype/zoom or even FaceTime or what’s app video? That would be really helpful. So far I think you’ve just kept the landscape PIP. Also - is it possible to cut with an automated ‘follow the speaker’ set up? I’m guessing this needs a mixer - but what would you recommend? I’d like to achieve the best viewer experience but with the min of operational load - as I will be presenting and operating on my own a lot.. thanks?
Also, of course depends on your use case, but switching directly using 1-2-3-4 leaves CUT & AUTO to be used if you could re-map them, and personally I don’t use different transition times nor effects, either, so there are multiple buttons potentially usable for macro triggering for eg. in addition to the PiP buttons.
Thanks for the clear explanation Alex. I was getting annoyed with the PIP size always reverting to small. I can now try to use this with Companion to create buttons on my Streamdeck to do this.
Hi, New user here, Can you program a macro with the computer and the atem mini pro connected but then use the macro with the atem not connected to the computer? in other words , does it save it to the hardware?
Great stuff! Love it! Very helpful. I want to set this up with my mini pro. 2 Keyed cameras shots one a close up one a wide with different images in the background. and be able to switch between them with one button.
This is brilliant stuff. Please, please, please do more about macros. Please tell us about editing the XML file. Please teach us about flying keys. I have been trying to do this but it doesn’t well for me. Thank you Alex! By the way, the bell is greyed out for me - even though I am a subscriber!
Hi Alex great job on teaching how to program AtEM macros. Could you do a video on how to blur or depth of field while live streaming video lower thirds I'm outta ideals on how doing so. Thanks
Alex, Thanks a lot for the informative video on Macros. Definitely, you have one of the best educational structural tutorial for the ATM. I created a macro for camera 4, bottom right, for example. When I recall and run the macro, the position and the resizing work well from the software, except, that when I hit the Right Botton in the ATM Mini Pro ISO, everything goes back to the default state of the select camera. How to fix this? Or Am I be missing something here. I don't see the benefit of having four PIP camera buttons that don't record the resize action of the macro. Having to use the software every time to recall the size of the corner in the middle of a production seems to be combersome.
Thank you for the superb set of videos on the ATEM Mini!! Do any of these need to be updated for the software/ firmware updates rolled out since then? Do * macros only record actions taken in the software *, or also the actions taken in/ on/ with the hardware?
This tut definitely greased wheels for ideas! Well timed content & easily consumed. Thank you! (not a big fan of the hospital gown shirt... but the tut content itself is SOLID!!!)
Great video Alex, one slightly off topic question it looks like you are using the RODE NT-USB Microphone and have BOTH the usb and audio connections plugged into it. Would I be correct in guessing that you are using the Audio connection to connect a USB powered mic to the ATEM Mini? Would be great if you are as that would allow me to get that mic and still use it with the ATEM's audio input rather than getting a condenser mic and a phantom power source. Thanks
Thanks for making this video. I am curious, if we want to show it go from a single camera and slides then to a two up shot (get rid of the slides) how would you do that? To show it actually move from one super source state to another but have movement between then? Hope this makes sense.
You have such an incredible knack of explaining complex material in the simplest possible way.
When I set up our ATEM Mini Pro ISO for the first time at the church last night, I was playing with PiP, and I noticed that it kept resetting my size and positions when hitting the hardware buttons. YOU ARE AWESOME!!! Your presentation is smooth, direct, no "umm's" and so well organized!! THANK YOU!!!
Thank you for this. Very informative. How can you do a split screen from 2 sources?
Many thanks for this tutorial. I appreciate your work and how you explain. It was a great help to start with the Atem mini pro and macros. Thanks lot!
Brilliant. just getting to grips with ATEM Mini Pro thanks 👍
Such a great video! You took me from no knowledge of macros to a solid understanding of them, all through the presentation of a gifted teacher. Thanks!
Alex, another great tutorial. Did this set up and got it on my Stream Deck and it works great. Many thanks and keep it coming.
This is the best tutorial for the ATEM Mini/Pro that I've come across. Thanks Alex for being so informative, clear and concise. It is much appreciated.
You're very welcome, I'm glad you found it helpful! There will be more coming soon :)
Save Startup State! Been practicing on mine for a week and couldn't figure out why I had to keep restoring the file every time I turned it on. Invaluable information. Keep up the great training videos. Much appreciated.
Thanks David! Really appreciate the comment and so glad that the video could help!

Just got my ATEM Mini Pro. First livestream will be tomorrow morning! This tutorial on Macros is my favorite tutorial I've watched today so far!!
Terrific work, Alex. Concise. The best ATEM Macro tutorial I've seen yet. Your Macro series will be greatly appreciated. thank you.
William McCarthy thanks very much William! If you have any suggestions for what macros you’d like to set next in the series, let me know :)
@@AlexPettitt Do you have a method of replication the "Super Source" feature on the ATEM Mini Pro? Do a Split PIP
Best ATEM tutorials on TH-cam!

Thanks so much for the lovely comment Richard! Glad to hear the video has helped too! All the best, Alex
Brilliant. Find with the ATEM you put in the hard work initially and it pays off just before you go live. Thank you.
Alex, you are an excellent teacher. Methodical and you have excellent visual aids. I am an audio guru, but I am just learning video and have a lot to learn. Your videos help me feel more confident quickly. Sincere thanks!
Really glad to hear that my videos have been useful for you Curt!
Wow. What a great video. Thanks for the thorough explanation. I could never have gotten this out of the Black Magic manuals.
Thank you so much! Your teaching is so logical and clear and easy to follow. I really look forward to more of your content.

Very helpful … your explanations of creating macros is clear and the extra tips (like the pause for one frame) well explained. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment :)
Hi Alex.
Great tutorials! Macros.... can they be saved, exported and shared. I.e. imported and used on different machines? Has anyone started a macros library?
Alex, I've been using your teachings combined with Companion today and the results are stellar! Thank you for your clarity, and your lessons being so concise!
I love this, I’ve been animating the position of my PIPs so they slide on and off the screen, switching camera when off screen...
SO helpful. adding the pause is awesome. thanks
This was great. I was about ready to try doing my first macros. Now I can crib these. PIP was to be my first project. Second project; use USK for a repeatable green screen studio setup, use DSK to bring on 4 diff lower thirds on top.
Extremly well understandable, no matter how deep you are already into the topic. Awesome!
Pretty much the best explenations of how-to-do things with the ATEM, dude you rock!
You explain so well and show every single move, really helpful, thank you!!!!
Every time I wish my ATEM mini could do something different than how it operates out of the box, you seem to always share a way to do so. Thank you!
Excellent and Resourceful! IDK why anyone would give it a thumbs down. There's always a Hater out there for us all!!
Keep up the great work sir! SUBSCRIBED!!

Do a video on using lower thirds and graphics like logos . This video was very helpful. Great job in teaching all of us out here.
Hi Alex great job on explaining how to create PIP macros. I was wondering if you could do a video on lower 3rds (live video) depth of Fields
Very cool. Thank you for a great tutorial. I didn't understand until I got one of these in my hands that it's a lot more than a simple switcher. The audio dynamics and EQ controls are very useful and now the world of macros!
@Alex Pettitt EPIC tutorial as always, the way you present is exceptional!
Great video. Very useful guide to creating macros. Thanks for the great explanation.
Beautiful!

Hi Matt! Were you able to execute BM macros from the StreamDeck? I just got one, and that was my first thought. Thank you, Rex.

Amazing, Clever & Easy to follow
Alex, fantastic demo. Great work.
Man you are a great blessing. You described everything well. It helped me greatly.
Extremely helpful! Thank you, Alex, Jeremy.
Awesome you are the best tutor for the ATEM on YouTUbe
SOLID AF. Nice work. Thanks so much for cruisen through this so easily.
That was the best ATEM mini tutorial I have watched.... Thanks so much!
Alex, Thanks, it's very helpful for me. The best ATEM Clips!
Dude you just let me make my job so much more efficient. THANK YOU!
Awesome video! Thank you so much! Greetings from Germany
Great presentation. Very helpful in getting me up to speed on this product. It fills in a lot of gaps.
Can you fade the PiP on screen?

great job Alex!
I just wish we could assign PIP macros to the PIP buttons. That’s probably my next top request now that we have audio delay.
Agreed! It would be great to have this option in the ATEM Setup!
Agreed.

This is AWESOME! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. Very helpful for understanding Macros.
Great video! Very helpful--especially the idea of creating macros for camera switching. Awesome.
Excellent tutorial; very clear instructions. Thank you!
Thanks for the clear explanation Alex. I was getting annoyed with the PIP size always reverting to small. I can now try to use this with Companion to create buttons on my Streamdeck to do this.
Excellent tutorial. It is very helpful. Thank you!
amazing! I have always thought BMD was great, but not many tutorials on how to use their tools. Totally subscribing.
Great tutorial! Very easy to understand. THANK YOU!
Thanks for this. Can you do a follow up on how to actually edit the macro scripts that are created? A deeper dive on macros would be great.
Thank you so much -- as always, your explanations are very helpful. Cheers.
Hi, New user here, Can you program a macro with the computer and the atem mini pro connected but then use the macro with the atem not connected to the computer? in other words , does it save it to the hardware?
Very enlightening ATEM Macros

thanks for this! Please do a macro video for moving between stills.
Great tutorial very clear one of the best I’ve seen thank you😀 LAS
great thanks a lot! saved me couple of hours understanding the logic.
Just subscribed, great job breaking that all down, thank you. Now I have a lot more of your tutorials to watch, lol. thanks again!

1000 thumbs up. Thanks you for this excellent video.
Thanks for your detailed viedos. Much appreciated.
Fantastic teaching!
Thank you, it was a very good lesson
Greetz,

Alex can you do something to explain the Upstream Keys and how they are used? This was an excellent tutorial thank you.
Very clear explanation. Do you have a video on flying keys?
Not yet! But it is on my list of videos for the future :)
Great video Alex, one slightly off topic question it looks like you are using the RODE NT-USB Microphone and have BOTH the usb and audio connections plugged into it. I loved this Video. It helped me greatly. I was wondering if the Atem has a feature that transitions the PIP, like fade on or off ?
always wanted to enlarge the PiP. this is great!
Thanks for making this video. I am curious, if we want to show it go from a single camera and slides then to a two up shot (get rid of the slides) how would you do that? To show it actually move from one super source state to another but have movement between then? Hope this makes sense.
Thanks, very useful clearly presented video. Will be adding the macros to my stream deck XL via Bitfocus Companion.
Thank you - very good explanation. Have you used the Elgato Stream Deck to set-up macros with the Atem Mini?
This is excellent. You rock and I appreciate you and your videos!!
Great presentation!
Great video. thanks for taking the time to make it.
