To everyone trying to blame the victims: I live in southeast Tennessee. My mother was raised in the Tennessee mountains. I've visited North Carolina a few times.
Most of these hurricane survivors were born and raised there. That is all they know.
And, don't forget, they have not had a flash flood like this one since 1916, over 100 years ago.
How would you deal with situation? Don't be so judgmental. Show some compassion.

Correction. $27-million was not paid to survivors, it's paid to the state government and NGOs. Most of the state funding will go for debris cleanup & infrastructure recovery, not directly to people in need. Also, I think only people with flood insurance receive FEMA aid for home repairs, property loss or the entire loss of their home. Probably no one in the mountains has flood insurance if they weren't in a flood zone. MANY people who lost their house will lose the land to foreclosure. How can they pay a mortgage note AND rent for separate housing? I saw an elderly couple who only had about $4,000 left to pay off a 30-year loan. She was crying because now it's gone in a mudslide. Although it was a miracle they and their 2 grandkids survived! Their grandson survived because the family dog stood on top of the rubble and barked and barked to tell the rescue crew where he was! Protected under a staircase, buried under 12 feet of rubble! ❤😢
We told a truck load of supplies down to Hartford TN just yesterday (10/5). The carnage in these areas is hard to capture on video. The people are working hard to dig themselves out - but anyone who cand get down there to lend a hand, even for a couple of days, with tools and building supplies, would be greatly appreciated. On the TN side, Hartford and Newport are especially hard hit.

This disaster was likely once in 500 to a 1000 yrs disaster.

$750 was insulting when I heard about it. I'm the best off of my friend group. My house only sustained around $1500 of damage (I've worked construction for 15 years, so I'm pretty good at accurately pricing damage). Multiple friends lost everything. Furniture, appliances, personal memorabilia, one friend lost their house. $750.... I guess is in the right direction, but that's not even 1 month of rent.

When Katrina hit, a lot of people in California, like tree cutters and construction crews, went to help out clear the damage and rebuild. We need that same kinda help to happen in NC.
In a catastrophic event, you need to rely on yourself and locals for any help for 3-5 days. It take time to mobilize a response, and with total devastation in multiple states, hang on, help is coming! (we hear about keeping an emergency kit in your car, and emergency supplies on hand, in case of an earthquake in CA. They warn us to keep emergency kits and food, as help will not be instant.)
They need the power to sign-up for that $750…

Preparation is necessary, HOWEVER, you are judging how not prepared you think people were. Many were expecting or told that higher ground would be safer, yet few if any expected the humongous landslides, mudslides, dam breaks and bodies of water rising several feet high and becoming rapids. Furthermore, in some places people were told to stay put, like in a video I watched where Asheville enacted a CURFEW ( lockdown) and didn't allow people to even escape! So please keep your assumptions to yourself. People are suffering, and some even at the hands of incompetent government.

There were days of heavy rain prior, then Hurricane Helene dumped a ton more rain and also caused a weather phenomenon called orographic precipitation (upslope rain). The mountainous terrain snaked all that water down into narrower areas, picking up debris. This added more weight and force to the flow and then that got forced into even narrower areas, like their roads, causing a faster and faster flow, picked up more debris adding more weight and force to the flow. Water finds the easiest way back to the oceans.

I have family and friends from Asheville who have had their homes swept away, barely made it out alive, and are being denied.
There is no justification for Mayorkas to come out saying FEMA barely has enough money to help with this hurricane and won't have enough to cover the rest of hurricane season.

I think you can probably find some fb, My daughter and her husband saw some and went to mountains to help get food and medicine etc to people who haven't had any for 6 days. Unfortunately there were 32 concurrent flash flood warnings at the peak over 5 states during Helene. They didn't get to everybody. An inexpensive weather radio will give out emergency alerts too. We're dependent, in Canada, on having devices powered up 24/7 OR we get notified of an emergency *after* the fact when we power up the next device.

I'd like to hear some actual people who received part of that $27,000,000. I have heard residential victims who had managed to find out how to apply and each one said they were denied in NC, one reason was them not having identification which they lost in the disaster.
