So glad you did this song, not many reactors have. Juice Newton is such a versatile singer. Definitely check out Queen of Hearts, The Sweetest Thing, and maybe Love's Been a Little Bit Hard on Me.
Gary, EVERY song you mentioned is fire! Juice Newton was huge for a few years when I was a kid. LOVE her songs. "Angel of the morning" was first recorded by Merrilee Rush in 1968... Juice Newton covered it in 1981. She quit music for quite a while in the 90's, but eventually returned to performing.
I like Rush's version better. It's just sounds more poignant and "real" to me. Less electronic. And Rush's voice sounds warmer IMO. I'm not saying Newton is very good, just a different timbre.
@@richh5951 Good catch, Merrilee was the first I was aware of, and I looked into this a little more, there were no less than 10 versions of this song, probably more, released between '67 and '81 by different artists. I mean, I know songs that have more covers, but that's pretty impressive.
In 1968, when the original came out (sung by Merilee Rush) I absolutely fell in love with it and I would switch the car radio from station to station to hear the song over and over. My mother lamented "What has this world come to when a six year old's favorite song is about a prostitute?"
@@brucedillinger9448 The song is about a woman, that gave intimacy, who is okay with a relationship not happening. Judy Kay "Juice" Newton, pop/country legend. Like artists such as Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, she was part of the crowd of country singers that had wide crossover appeal. Her first big hit, which you'd love, was "It's a Heartache". "Queen of Hearts" is my personal fave, as it's a catchy as any song you'll hear. "Love's Been a Little Bit Hard On Me" is also terrific, as is "Break It To Me Gently", her cover of a Brenda Lee song. Also... you guys REALLY need to do a song by Crystal Gayle. She's a legend. Start with "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue". Sheena Easton is also another must-listen. "Morning Train" is a great opener for her.
I love this song, but my favorite Juice Newton song is "The Sweetest Thing". She has such a beautiful vocal style and is one of my favorite female singers.
I absolutely LOVE her voice, especially in the chorus!!! Both the original & this version are great, but Juice Newton's version is definitely the better version. Here are some more great songs from her: Queen Of Hearts, The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known), Break It To Me Gently, Love's Been A Little Bit Hard On Me, Tell Her No. She's definitely worthy!!! ❤
I'd say the production on this version is better, and I like Juice Newton's vocals, but I wouldn't say better than Merrilee, or, as I have just discovered, the original version, which was recorded by Evie Sands in 1967.

This song was written by Country writer Chip Taylor. He first offered it to Connie Francis who turned it down because she thought it was too risque. The original recording was by Evie Sands, then Merrilee Rush, then Skeeter Davis and then Olivia Newton John in 1972 as an album cut. Then this wonderful version by Juice came out in 1981 and the rest as they say is history. This is how the writer thought the song should have been sung.

The song has folkish acoustic guitar, power chords over a military drum riff, a pedal steel guitar from country, a power ballad chorus, marimbas for a Latin feel. … I first heard this 40+ years ago and never realized all of that depth and breadth in the arrangement
The basic theme is that she spent the night with a man and wants him to know she has no regrets. "If morning's echo says we've sinned, well, it was what I wanted now." Her name comes from from her childhood. Her little brother couldn't pronounce "Judy" and instead called her "Juicy"
Bold song for the times. Self-directed self confident woman in charge of her life. Nice version! Goodness! I'm even singing along on the chorus. Have not heard this tune in awhile. Great reaction, Guys! Thanks.
There was nothing "bold" about this song, and it has nothing to do with a "self-confident woman in charge of her life." It's just one more song about a woman dealing with the emotional fallout from a one-night stand.
Exactly! It was a perfect song during the Women’s Liberation Movement. The Sexual Revolution was a liberating realization that it wasn’t meant “Just For Men”😉
This is a remake of a top 10 1968 pop song by Merilee Rush. Juice Newton definitely has some country tunes. Ride 'Em Cowboy, River of Love, Texas Heartache. Her "breakout" song, as others have mentioned, is 1979's Queen of Hearts, written by Emmylou Harris' steel guitarist Hank DeVito.
The song is saying that she understands that she was just a “one night stand” and she’ll understand if he just leaves and she never sees him again. If so, he can just consider her a “Angel of the morning” because that’s all they’ll have.
I think the use of bells in this is brilliant, as if chiming in the morning and signifying the end of night's illusion. Of course that's just my personal interpretation.
"Loves Been A Little Bit hard On Me" is a good upbeat Juice Newton song. She has an amazing, unique voice. I put her in the category with Anne Murray. You can't quite pin their genre down, but dang, they are good.
I don’t know if my hormones are out of whack or if listening through headphones in 2022 vs cassette tape or radio, but I got chills throughput this song today. I forgot just how powerful this son is. Well your nobody called today...she hung up when i asked her name well i wonder, does she think shes being clever (clever, woo woo) Aww thanks for the memory.
Oh Wow, I don't think I've heard that song in at least 30 years, but Elizabeth's comment reciting of the words brought it right back to me! I had to go look it up immediately on TH-cam. What a great little pop song. Thanks for the memories.
This was first a hit in 1968 when sung by Merrilee Rush. Shaggy sampled it back around 2000 or so on his song Angel. Lots of Juice Newton suggestions below. She is folk/country. In memory of Naomi Judd who died over the weekend I recommend you listen to The Judds' "Mama He's Crazy", "Girl's Night Out", and/or "Love Can Build a Bridge".
I can now take an educated guess whether you're gonna like the song or not. As soon as I saw the title, I knew you'd both love it. ❤ It's a beautiful song. 😍 🎵🎙🎼
Juice Newton is amongst the few country artists if the 70s and 80s; to cross over into popular music, like Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Olivia Newton-John, and John Denver. Even Bonnie Tyler started as a country artist; who song, "It's a Heartache" crossed over into pop. She then embraced the pop star image, with "Total Eclipse of the Heart".
It was 1968 and Merrilee Rush had a number one hit song titled "Angel of The Morning." And 13 years later juice Newton cover her song "Angel of The Morning" and made it number one in 1981. Brilliant!
Sounds like you enjoyed the perfect balance of music by chilling with Juice. Cool, very cool 😎 I'm convinced that Classic rock fans(Zeppelin, The who,Stones, etc.) were swooning to Karen Carpenter's voice & music!

We saw Merrilee Rush, Freddie (Boom-Boom) Cannon, the group that sang The Lion Sleeps Tonight, and others at a live concert in Milwaukee maybe 20 to 25 years ago. Back then I think Merrilee Rush told me while the artists were selling their CD's that she lives in Oregon. I complimented her on her hair, and she got it that way using plenty of hair products. She was fun to speak with. Cannon was a sob on and off stage. All I did was thank him for his music back then while buying his CD.
If my husbands having one of those days, where he's stressed and about ready to pop, I put this song on and he's calm as can be. Her voice just totally relaxes her!! Great song and great reaction guys!
Chrissy Hindes of Pretenders does a great version of this. Was featured on an episode of Friends. Worth finding and viewing. Plus the bonus of hearing Smelly Cat by Phoebe! 🙀
Juice Newton, one of my favorite artists. My dad was “pen pals” with her in school. He said she was super nice. Also for the Deadpool fans. Maximum effort, i don’t care what anyone says it’s a romantic movie. Also if you’ve not done Crystal Gayle (who’s Loretta Lynn’s sister) Queen of hearts. It’s a great song too.
They use a common studio trick in this record. They have doubled her voice (overdubbed her singing with herself) on the chorus to increase it's impact. Great song, great production. Great record all the way around. Reminds me quite a bit of Linda Ronstadt.

I've always thought this song was powerful so when they used it in the ending scene of "Promising Young Woman", it was absolutely amazing! I watch that clip quite often.
Her voice is soft yet powerful. It’s a remake of a 1968 billboard number 1. It’s about social constructs. She was singing about premarital sex and around the same time Diana Ross and the supremes were singing about waiting for marriage
Her voice in this song has always put the goosies on my arms, and hearing the song today, the goosebumps showed up again. Thanks for the reaction. I agree with the others that you need to check out her other songs.
Oh yeah, Juice is no doubt the real deal and yeah, she's got country alright. I had the privilege of seeing her in concert in the mid 90's. Boy, could she still belt it out, like there's no tomorrow, in a stadium setting, no less. She, did this song, "Love's been a little bit hard on me", "The Sweetest Thing", and brought the house down with "Queen of Hearts", my favorite of hers.
I'm surprised no one is referencing Shaggy's hit version of "Angel". He changed the lyrics, but kept most of the melody in his version of this song in the early 2000's, I think.
Yes, I wonder if Jay and Amber know Shaggy's version! You guys should listen and compare them. I prefer Marilee Rush's original to Juice Newton's, though.
Hi guys, just wondering if y'all put the Judd's on the menu! The mother Naomi passed yesterday and were is still is so wonderful, Love can build a Bridge is wonderful and their 1st hit, Grandpa! Harmonies out of this world!

Ooo yes my parents had Anne Murray's Greatest Hits when I was a kid and I loved it... listened to it so many times.
“Break it to Me Gently” is my favorite by her! Also, “queen of hearts” and “the sweetest thing”.
Queen of Hearts is the bomb!
Great song! Also listen to "Queen of Hearts"! I believe it was written by her drummer. lol
Correct!!!
I don’t know if my hormones are out of whack or if listening through headphones in 2022 vs cassette tape or radio, but I got chills throughput this song today. I forgot just how powerful this son is.
I would like to suggest another artist that I loved about this time and that is Sylvia. Please put her song “Nobody” on your list. And some early Sheena Easton, “Morning Train” (she sang with Prince in one of his most popular videos). Thanks for another great reaction!
Well your nobody called today...she hung up when i asked her name well i wonder, does she think shes being clever (clever, woo woo)
Aww thanks for the memory.
Nobody is a great song!
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Oh Wow, I don't think I've heard that song in at least 30 years, but Elizabeth's comment reciting of the words brought it right back to me! I had to go look it up immediately on TH-cam. What a great little pop song. Thanks for the memories.
Also, Sheena Easton - For Your Eyes Only; this was the only song that would stop my daughter from crying when she was a baby.
Juice Newton was a crossover Country artist. “The Sweetest Thing (I’ve Ever Known)” and “Break It To Me Gently” are 2 great powerful ballads.
Juice could really belt it out!
"Queen of Hearts" is my favorite from her. Should also check out Rickie Lee Jones "Chuck Es in Love" for the folk rock vibe.
This was my mom's 'singing into the hairbrush in the bathroom song' back in the day. 😁❤️👍
Juice always added "juice" to every cover she did. I love her song The Sweetest Thing, and Playing With The Queen Of Hearts. 💘
Awesome music, impeccable voice. Timeless.
Actually Kenny Rogers, Olivia Newton-John, and John Denver evolved into country music instead of from country music.
It was 1968 and Merrilee Rush had a number one hit song titled "Angel of The Morning." And 13 years later juice Newton cover her song "Angel of The Morning" and made it number one in 1981. Brilliant!
Queen of Hearts is such a fun song, even a metalhead like I was would listen to it often.
Sounds like you enjoyed the perfect balance of music by chilling with Juice. Cool, very cool 😎 I'm convinced that Classic rock fans(Zeppelin, The who,Stones, etc.) were swooning to Karen Carpenter's voice & music!
A song called Some velvet morning recorded by Nancy Sinatra was psychedelic in a way but VANNILA FUDGE COVERED IT CHECK IT OUT A GOOD SONG IS A GOOD SONG FROM ANY AND ALL ERAS
@@markthomas9703 I just took a listen to both versions I prefer Sinatra/Hazelwood to Vanilla Fudge This is the 1st time I've ever heard this song, but I can tell it'll grow on me if I choose to listen to it Thanks for the recommendation 👍
@@christineobrien7707 It's interesting that Vannila Fudge covered this song but I agree it just isn't the same. But I thank you for taking your time to explore like that.
I always enjoyed this song and "Queen of Hearts" by Juice :)
The tempo transitions in this song are so remarkable. The slow down is like being pulled into a vortex without escape.
Fun tidbit, Shaggy the Jamaican reggae singer sampled this for his song Angel. Also, very good
My daughter and I used to sing this in the car when it'd come on the radio. She always thought the lyrics said "just brush my teeth before you leave me" instead of "just touch my cheek before you leave me". Hahaha
Definitely do Love’s Been a Little Bit Hard on Me and Playing with the Queen of Hearts. Also her duet with Eddie Rabbit is great , Both to Each Other(Friends and Lovers).
You can actually "feel" her singing. You feel the emotion.
Written by songwriter Chip Taylor who was a sometime singer-songwriter. 'Angel OTM' was covered by at least 6 artist including Evie Sands & Merilee Rush & P.P. Arnold. Chip is the brother of actor Jon Voight. His first successful song was 'Wild Thing' recorded by The Troggs in 66/67 and later by Jimi Hendrix.
Now you must do "Queen Of Hearts".
And let's not forget that the mighty *Dave Edmunds* was the first to record it and make it a moderate hit, another artist whose catalogue you guys need to _seriously_ check out. He is in my Top 10 of all-time favourite musicians. He also helped produce albums for *Foghat, Status Quo, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Stray Cats, Nick Lowe* and *Shakin' Stevens,* to name a few.
I love Dave Edmunds! And Nick Lowe. No one ever reacts to them.
Now there's a song they should hear, Dave Edmunds' version of I Hear You Knockin'.
@@dggydddy59 Yes, _and_ "Girls Talk" which *Elvis Costello* wrote but DE taking it out of the park. 😎
@@heidiv5488 *Nick Lowe* is in my Top 10, also... speaking of both men, they were in a group called *Rockpile* - "Teacher Teacher" would be a perfect first Rockpile song for RSR. 👌
I'm a big fan of Juice. I have several of her albums. Give Queen of Hearts a listen.
Yes! Juice Newton needs to be heard; beautiful voice! More Juice Newton is “Queen Of Hearts”, The Sweetest Thing” and many more!!!!
Love's Been a Little Bit Hard on Me is a nice, upbeat tune she does.
They use a common studio trick in this record. They have doubled her voice (overdubbed her singing with herself) on the chorus to increase it's impact. Great song, great production. Great record all the way around. Reminds me quite a bit of Linda Ronstadt.
Linda probably would have done a great rendition of this song too.
Love Juice Newton. The Pretenders did a nice cover of this song in the 90's.
I don’t know if my hormones are out of whack or if listening through headphones in 2022 vs cassette tape or radio, but I got chills throughput this song today. I forgot just how powerful this son is. I agree with all the songs others have suggested below for Juice.
I would like to suggest another artist that I loved about this time and that is SYLVIA. Please put her song “Nobody” on your list. And some early SHEENA EASTON, “Morning Train” (she sang with Prince in one of his most popular videos). Thanks for another great reaction!
ALSO would be nice to hear something from The Judds out of respect for Naomi Judd passing away this week.
This song was written by Chip Taylor (Jon Voigt's brother). He also wrote Wild Thing.
I've always thought this song was powerful so when they used it in the ending scene of "Promising Young Woman", it was absolutely amazing! I watch that clip quite often.
Yes! I know it was used in Deadpool too, but for me it’s inextricably linked to Promising Young Woman now. Gives me chills.
From one of my favorite albums in college in the early 70's.
Beautiful. Her name does sound like a ball player. ❤️
"The Sweetest Thing(I've ever known)" has more of a country vibe. Queen of Hearts has a faster beat. Both are great songs !
And ruined it.
I agree, it's not great imo, but it was popular and it's possible they may have heard it before, which is why I brought it up
Love Shaggy’s Angel
Break It To Me Gently is my favorite - Powerful voice!
She is so great, has such a sense of humor in many of her songs and videos.
Hi guys, just wondering if y'all put the Judd's on the menu! The mother Naomi passed yesterday and were is still is so wonderful, Love can build a Bridge is wonderful and their 1st hit, Grandpa! Harmonies out of this world!
Juice was a very popular country pop artist in the early 80s. Check out
Queen of hearts, The sweetest thing, Love's been a little bit hard on me 🤓❤️🎶
Ah yes .. I remember jamming to Juice. Thnx for the memories Amber & J. On to The Rolling Stones now 🥰👍🏼
This whole album is terrific. There's even a song written by Elton John on it that she performs.
In the early 80s ('81 especially), before I got into Christian music & discovered Amy Grant, Juice Newton was my favorite female singer. Yes she was country (pop) but she was EXCELLENT!
This was written by Chip Taylor, who wrote a lot of hits. Others include “Wild Thing” and “Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)” by Amber’s favorite, Janis Joplin!
Wild Thing is by the Troggs, a band they haven't reacted to yet.
Jimi Hendrix also did a version of Wild Thing.
They should also check out PP Arnold's version from the 60s one day.
Chip Taylor is Jon Voight's brother and Angelina Jolie's uncle.
Wild thing was originally recorded by the wild ones
I went to her Birthday party in 1993 She is from Virginia Beach.I worked with her brother
Break it to me Gently is a must! I had the pleasure of seeing her in concert in Phoenix in the 80's and she was Amazing❤ You wouldn't believe such power could come out of such a little thing! Absolutely beautiful. Thank you for a great reaction ❤❤
Shot Full Of love by Juice is one of my all time favorite by her.
Please react to The Judds (Naomi and Wynona ) in honor of Naomi who passed yesterday at 75 . Love Can Build a Bridge and Why Not Me
Juice newton queen of hearts is another good one to check out
Juice Newton songs: Break it to me Gently( also do the Brenda Lee version), Queen of Hearts, Love's Been a Little Bit Hard on Me (be sure to play the video to this one...it's funny!!). Also do the original Angel of the Morning by Merrilee Rush. And, it's about time you did Nicolette Larson's Lotta Love.
Powerful cover of a 60's song from Marilee Rush. Reggae / Rap artist Shaggy also used a lot of it in his hit Angel
I was listening to this in 1968 by a local musician . Merilee Rush from Seattle did this and my opinion still the best since it was originally done by her. Her husband Neil was in another band with son Michael.
Totally agree!
This rock-n-roller pauses for Juice Newton.
Never been a country fan, but something about her voice and music gives me the feels
Great tune though you should react to the original ASAP by Merilee Rush.
You gotta hear Juice sing "The Sweetest Thing" really highlights her beautiful voice.
Juice Newton has such a beautiful voice. I always laugh because few people know this is a song about a man leaving his mistress the morning after to return to his wife. Kinda sad, but still her cover is incredible.
