I absolutely loved this song as a kid when it came out in 1981. It was her immediate follow-up to "Angel of the Morning", which you reacted to previously. Next up should be "The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known)", "Love's Been a Little Bit Hard on Me", and her stirring rendition of a Brenda Lee song, "Break It To Me Gently". And if you're wondering - her birth name is Judith Kay Newton, she was born in Lakehurst, NJ, she just turned 70 this past February, and yes, she's still going!
This version of "The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known)": th-cam.com/video/gDlurUxDhD4/w-d-xo.html There's a bad version with a weird sounding violin instead of the amazing oboe. I'm trying to steer them to the correct version. Also, no live versions. 🙂
That's funny...I hated this song as a kid. I was born in 1978, and I remember loathing the chorus of this song from before I was in kindergarten. This and "If I Had a Hammer." It's probably because my mom used to play certain songs on repeat endlessly for months without ever tiring of them. But yeah, this song's chorus is very unpleasant to me.
Other great Juice Newton songs are "Love's Been A Little Bit Hard On Me" "The Sweetest Thing I've Ever Known" and "Break It To Me Gently". Also, I liked her version of Bonnie Tyler's "It's A Heartache" as well
If we've talking Bonnie Tyler, my favourite song of hers (by far) is "Lost in France" (th-cam.com/video/gK-SVR86ThY/w-d-xo.html). I was only 9 when I heard it but was captivated. It was before she suffered vocal chord damage - not that it stopped her career. She made the best use of her 'new' husky voice 🙂 Her other songs are amazing as well. I'd never heard of Juice Newton before (but I am in the UK) but obviously I'll check out more of her music.
Went to a camp one summer when I was 11 and bus picked up variety of kids from different town/cities in Southern California. Everyone was listen to their own type of music and sticking with their friends. Someone started playing Queen of Hearts and all other music stopped and we were all singing along. Wonderful memory, brought us all together and we all started talking with each other after that.
Another Juice Newton song along the same lines as this one is "Love's Been A Little Bit Hard On Me." You really get to see her fun side and personality in the video.
I love Juice Newton. I would love to see y'all react to Jim Croce Time in a Bottle . Its a song he wrote for his son before his accident. It is beautiful. The sweetest thing was a great Juice Newton song
My favorite Juice Newton song...I could listen to it over and over again. This used to play all the time on the jukebox during my Saturday morning bowling league.
I met her in the early 80's. She was sitting on the steps of her tour bus visiting and signing autographs. Very gracious and speaking to everyone that approached. Never been a great fan of this type of music but her show was quite awesome.
Juice was a star of the time, never understood how she gets overlooked in the canon of music history. My mom loved her, so I grew up with her music. Streaming is awesome in so many ways, but I kind of miss the era of records, cassettes, and CDs. We got exposed to whole albums from the past through our families.
Gotta do some Sheena Easton....she crossed genres and was an amazing talent that never got enough recognition. Also, Expose and some Angelina Jordan...you've done one of Angelina, but she has sooooo many AMAZING covers out...definitely a prodigy and one of the greatest vocalists in years
This song reminds me so much of riding in the car with my dad, listening to early to mid 80s country. I didn’t even know who did this song, even though I was aware of the existence of an artist named Juice Newton. Always figured she was a pop/ballad singer. But this song still was getting regular airplay when I was a kid in the mid 80s. But this song… always liked it as a kid and like I said, it hits that memory button in my brain.
Dave Edmunds was the first to record this, he's a great Rock & Roll artist and one of my favorites, but I do prefer Juice Newton's version mostly because I think her voice suits it better. Written by Hank DeVito from Emmylou Harris's backing band.
Correct Steve, that was a great album, I still have my vinyl copy. My favourite track is Sweet Little Lisa with the wonderful Albert Lee on guitar. I went to see Rockpile at Leeds University in 1979 when I was 15, great concert.
@@chrismcdonagh688 Super! There is a video from the session on TH-cam with Albert Lee. Search on TH-cam 'Born Fighters' 1979 Documentary Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds & Rockpile.
Ah yes I remember watching that when it came out Steve, it's excellent. I remember my mother being disgusting with Nick Lowe's swearing in it lol. I also remember Dave Edmunds reaction when Albert Lee started playing, he really was in awe of him and Dave is no slouch on the guitar himself. Albert is one of these musicians who always seems to turn up where great music is going on.
Juice Newton also did a duet with Eddie Rabbitt called "Both To Each Other (Friends And Lovers)". If you haven't done a reaction to Eddie Rabbitt please check him out. Some of his songs you should check out are "I Love A Rainy Night" "Step By Step" and "Drivin' My Life Away". Eddie Rabbit also did a duet with Crystal Gayle (Loretta Lynn's sister) "You And I".
She has a good sense of humor, and it's also a big part of her "Love's Been a Little Bit Hard on Me" music video too....I prefer Hard/Heavy Rock..but Juice Newton is a country singer I have in my collection 👍👍
Both of Juice Newton's recordings you've reacted to were covers. This one was written by steel guitarist Hank DeVito who backed Emmylou Harris for many years. Dave Edmunds was the first to record this song in 1979. Juice's 1980 cover was already certified gold when it peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
There's a song I haven't heard in years since high school! I loved playing this over and over again! I am so very glad you enjoyed this one of Juice Newton! Enjoyed your reaction! ☮💕👍👏
There was a time when people kept a case or two of blank Maxell tapes, and recorded favorite albums to play in the car. "Juice" was one of those albums. The tape is long gone, but the LP is still sitting on my shelf downstairs. In 1981 I had a new job with a really long commute to work and "Juice" was one I played over and over. "Queen of Hearts" was quite popular and got tons of radio play. Also, the video was a hit on MTV. I love country rock, and her voice is wonderful. However, as well as this one did as a single, there is even better work on that album. Your next one should be "The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Know)." Very beautiful exposed country rock flavor, and a chorus to rip your heart out.
"Love's Been A Little Bit Hard On Me"! Fun song with great vocals and a hilarious video. Everything you love about this is back and equally great in that song. "Break It To Me Gently" is great too but that might also open the door for Brenda Lee to step through with the original version.
Love Juice! I sing this song a lot at karaoke. Fun song! If you like her, you should give a listen to her song, Break It To Me Gently. It will SLAY you!! My favorite of hers!
Jay & Amber, you'll love her "The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known)" and "You Make Me Want To Make You Mine"!! edit- Dave Edmunds first recorded "Queen Of Hearts", a Hank DeVito song.
I've always loved this song since I first heard it when I was a kid. One of my favorite pop-country tracks. I'm glad JN is still getting attention and respect.
This is a sweet version. Juice Newton had a string of hits that crossed over to the pop charts in the early 80s. Most of them (if not all?) were covers, or written by outside songwriters, but Juice had a sweet, but commanding voice that took them over! This was a hit for Dave Edmunds in the UK in 1979, but it went mostly unheard here in the U.S. Dave Edmunds is DEFINITELY someone you should react to, if you haven't already! Other songs from Juice include Love's Been a Little Bit Hard on Me, Break it to Me Gently, Tell Her No, The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known), Heart of the Night and It's a Heartache.
Love Juice Newton. Loved this whole album. She's on the fringes of country pop rock and folk. Juice invites you to have fun and join in. She's got a fun sence of humor.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
I remember this song from the summer of 1981. I was working at my first summer job as a custodian cleaning an empty school with a couple other older guys.
I saw her in concert back in 1982. She was the opener for Hank Williams Jr and Alabama. Alabama was at the top of their game at that point, and with Hank also headlining, there were thousands who were able to see her for the first time. Great song, great performer, great concert! I wish she had done more
This is my favorite song of hers...I haven't read the comments. The Queen of Hearts is Cocaine. That's known, correct? “Laying out another line, thinking about a life of crime”
This takes me back to fifth grade and the very early days of MTV. Also: the time in the late 70s/early 80s when country music artists crossed over to Top 40 radio and became popular.
Wife here...Loved Juice Newton as a very small child..!!!...She was one of the first Female musicians to cross over both Rock and Country charts!!!...That was a huge accomplishment at that time!
She's one of my favourites. I had two of her albums and played them so much!! She has so many good songs. Break it to me Gently is my all time favourite of hers.

When she came on with her band, you could tell the difference between the amateur and professional performer. She is excellent...and a real professional.
My mother was a huge fab of Juice Newton when I was a kid, so I heard a lot of her music. Great choice - LOVE Juice and her music. Another underrated female singer from the very early eighties is Charlene Duncan. She has a beautiful song called Can't We Try. Starts out slow - but builds to the most amazing climax. She has the most angelic voice. Amber - I think you'd LOVE her.
😮 What a pleasant surprise seeing you guys reacting to this song which I’ve always loved. For me personally I think it’s one of the catchiest and infectious songs I’ve ever heard. The selection of instruments and how they’re arranged evokes the imagery of a train chugging down the musical rails with Juice Newton as the conductor of this musical locomotive. With her beautiful voice she can convey a story through song, whether it be a beautiful, romantic ballad “Angel Of The Morning” or this fun and impossible to resist song “Queen Of Hearts”. I loved both of your comments because they were honest and reflective of what makes this song hard to resist. Since you both enjoyed this Juice Newton song I really hope you guys seriously consider reacting to Juice’s song and video for “Love’s Been A Little Bit Hard On Me”. Would love to see and hear what you guys have to say about that song and video 😊
OMG , YOU FINALLY PLAYED JUICE NEWTON. SHE CAME AND LEFT THE SCENE BUT I LOVED HER SOUND, A great part of the 80s! I miss her and that voice was amazing.
Juice is a great singer. I think she is most comfortable with Country / Country rock songs. Most of the songs on Juice Newton's album titled "Juice", where "Queen of Hearts" is from, are County / Country Rock songs. "Angel of the Morning" is more of a Soft Rock song with a hint of country. "Angel of the Morning" was first recorded by pop singer Evie Sands, then by 'Merrilee Rush and the Turnabouts', a Pop / Country group. "Queen of Hearts" written by Hand DeVito, a country artist and pedal steel player, was first recorded by Dave Edmonds, a New Wave / Rock / Rockabilly artist, then by Rodney Cowell, a country, country pop singer. Cowell and Newton are contemporaries, both were born in the early 50's and their careers stated in the 70's. 🎵🎵🎸😎
As I'm listening I get this memory of being a kid, riding around the neighborhood with friends on our bikes (literally riding through our yards), with this song blaring on someone's portal radio wedged into my bike basket and the girls singing along at the top of our lungs. 😆
All right my babies..... This talented artist has been heard on country, adult contemporary, easy listening, and other formats. The melody of the song had both of you swayin'🕺💃😎👍🏼 What an awesome reaction to Juice Newton ‼️😁
More Juice worth listening to... Low Down And Lonesome Wouldn't Mind The Rain Love's Been A Little Bit Hard On Me - great song, cute video Texas Heartache Old Flame - the words to this song really strike a chord The Sweetest Thing I've Ever Known Cheap Love Headin' For A Heartache A Little Love It's A Heartache All I Have To Do Is Dream - remake of Everly Brothers song Heart Of The Night - remake of Poco hit Shot Full of Love Break It To Me Gently, Studio Version Hurt - you can really hear the 'yodel in her voice in this song You Make Me Want to Make You Mine LAY BACK IN THE ARMS OF SOMEONE River Of Love Tell Her No Can't Wait all Night - rocker Juice Crazy Little Thing Called Love - writen by Freddie Mercury (Queen) Fall'in In Love - something about this song just gets to you and keeps you listening Country Comfort - written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin
A few female Friday reactions- Gladys Knight & The Pips - To Be Invisible, Carole king - Its Too Late , Chaka Khan - papillon, Diana Ross - Good Morning Heartache.
was my favortie song when i was young, i started out enjoying rock then went to country as i got older and this was the transistion time and was kind of a transistion song. it was both a country and rock hit
You should really take a listen to Rosanne Cash (Johnny’s daughter). She was hitting it pretty big right about this same time. Seven Year Ache is iconic.
Juice is legend forever, never gets old ever. May i sugget omeone for you que? Sylvia!!! her hit "Nobody" has similar vibes and as a country/pop crossover

As I'm listening I get this memory of being a kid, riding around the neighborhood with friends on our bikes (literally riding through our yards), with this song blaring on someone's portal radio wedged into my bike basket and the girls singing along at the top of our lungs. 😆
I always loved Juice Newton!
Saw her once in concert in the mid 90's, and man, what a voice and stage presence! Delivered to us more than we expected.
"I Love A Rainy Night" by Eddie Rabbit has a kickin' country vibe similar to this. Also from the early 80's like this.
All right my babies..... This talented artist has been heard on country, adult contemporary, easy listening, and other formats. The melody of the song had both of you swayin'🕺💃😎👍🏼 What an awesome reaction to Juice Newton ‼️😁
I watched that video recently and was reminded that she has a very good voice. The video is cute and playful too.
Saw her at my county fair. Fell in love with her

Crystal Gayle "DON'T IT MAKE MY BROWN EYES BLUE". Oh, and she did some duets with Andy Gibb. 😀
Got to meet her through my fifth grade teacher in 1984. She was Juice Newtons cousin.
As a kid I'd hear this come on the radio and I was a happy camper on a road trip to grandma's house 2 states away.
Gotta listen to "The Sweetest Thing", just beautiful.
My husband and mine's song is Juice Newton The Sweetest Thing. You need to do that next. Angel of Morning is also a beautiful song
Haven't heard this song in ages. So fun to hear it again!
I love this Juice Newton tune. I recommend Dido - White Flag - for a future female Friday. She has a great voice.
If “White Flag” isn’t my favorite, then “No Freedom” is. Love Dido’s singing (and writing).
was my favortie song when i was young, i started out enjoying rock then went to country as i got older and this was the transistion time and was kind of a transistion song. it was both a country and rock hit
You've GOT to add to your list, Little Bit Town "Pontoon" before the summer ends!!!
She also wrote Sweet Sweet Smile which was recorded by Carpenters.
Juice Newton's "Love's Been a Lttle bit Hard on me" is a very good song as well. You should check iit out as well.
You should really take a listen to Rosanne Cash (Johnny’s daughter). She was hitting it pretty big right about this same time. Seven Year Ache is iconic.
I have suggested this artist&song 3 times. C’mon guys. Pls do it🤞🏻
Great suggestion! Hopefully they'll get around to it soon! 👍😃👍
Juice is legend forever, never gets old ever. May i sugget omeone for you que? Sylvia!!! her hit "Nobody" has similar vibes and as a country/pop crossover
"The Sweetest Thing" is my fav.
