i don't normally touch core clock, i usually let it auto oc based on maxing out the power limit. I have been able to get +800mhz stable on memory clock when testing with superposition but i turn it back down to 0 for normal desktop use.
I might be able to tell what happend to the card, there has been issues where Windows driver don't work with custom VBios made with NVflash Certs Bypassed. and makes windows 10 not load the driver with Error 43. It would have been really nice i you had dumped the bios first to confirm if it was a stock bios. I made a post here that described a similar problem. My investigation was that drivers older than 385.69 works with custom bios but stops on newer ones. Using a random stock firmware makes the newer driver work. From reports i could see some have been able to use Custom bioses, but haven't yet been able to find a pattern to why some works. My thread was here forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1029361/b/t/post/5246409/?offset=12#5286844
I've had a similar issue with a very old GPU in the past (GT 6600) This was my temporary card setting up Ryzen while waiting for my card to arrive. I found that the latest drivers would work on the desktop but not in games. An outdated driver would work in games but not on the desktop. Whenever the opposing driver was installed, CPU was pegged at 100% utilization. Thanks for this video, I'll make sure to update the ROM on that card so I can use it for testing more effectively in the future!
Sky Nabess do you think there is every gpu rom available online? i got EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti iCX GAMING 11G-P4-6591-KR and there is no exact rom for it online. Moreover, even in jay case there is subset mismatch, while it usually works just fine, it can cause instability as different subset can mean some component of the gpu maybe different. why taking the risk when you can just use gpu-z to backup your rom with 1 click.
No, you aren't. Should have been the first thing. And for all the people saying "DDU!", this was a working system with working drivers before the 780 was installed, so all the driver dicking was unnecessary. Verify the vendor/HW IDs and reflash the nvidia BIOS when those check out.
Thanks for this Jay. I learned something new. I most likely would have never known to update the rom on the gpu and would have frustratingly given up much sooner.
Thanks Jay After cleaning drivers, testing a card on a test bench... i almost gave up. I tried finding bios rom files. And sure enough, it’s alive again. My buddy says thanks.
Joseph Jose OK, explain why it isn't a fix, if it wasn't working before, and it works after, wouldn't that be fixing it? What would you call this if this isn't fixing? Not all problems are hardware based, software can be damaged as well. And BTW reflowing is a temporary "fix" more like putting a bandage on it than anything, really fixing issues that reflowing "fixes" often requires specialty equipment

Haven't watch the video other than the issues but my first guess is no drivers and in device manager it's recognised as just 'basic video adapter' or whatever it is when you don't have drivers yet
Someone should get in contact with everyone like this guy and get them to write notes on all the weird issues theyve encountered and that person should write them all into a book. holy F, i'm going to try this tomorrow. I'm having the same exact issues with my 780ti
did it work?
@@joshsimpson1841 didn't actually try it, bought a 2080 instead
@@alabasterwanted I mean you coulda still done it? Would have been an easy 100 dollars selling the 780ti (I have no idea what that card goes for ever)
Didnt jay give nick a 980 ti ?
PsyBust3r exactly!!
He might be sold his gpu for a quadruple price to miner cancer cryptocurrency
yes that was when 2 idiots build a PC video for Nick birthday - that been upgraded to a 1080 but my thinking this is from his PC before that
No that was not Nick, that was for Jays bathroom HTPC
@dodermanator I am talking about this video (no bathroom HTPC in sight) not sure where you got that from th-cam.com/video/o8Yv1FyOicc/w-d-xo.html
10:44 that Louqe Ghost case on top of that shelf, can't wait to see the overkill build on this tiny box
Funny, I pulled an old EVGA GTX 970 out of the closet to build a browsing rig for my father in law, and it is doing the exact same thing. Been trying to diagnose on forums and found this video that I'm sure I viewed before. Thanks Jay and crew!
you look like a white version of will smith
Hello papa

It’s rewind time
I feel he looks like less bad ass and nerd version of Stephen Lang from Avatar / Don't breathe
@mattroski007 Hahahhaa
Try going back to driver version 365.XX. Anything newer than that on my old(now dead, rip error 43) gtx 680 4gb would cause many crashes in games.
storm37000 My 660 ti also crashes unless i underclock it by 90 mhz. Would that work?
i don't normally touch core clock, i usually let it auto oc based on maxing out the power limit. I have been able to get +800mhz stable on memory clock when testing with superposition but i turn it back down to 0 for normal desktop use.
What the hell happened with the Original ROM then ?? ........ how can this happen...
X7007 check his older videos, this is the 780 he experimented on ages ago
What perfect timing on this video. I am having that boot locking issue with my 980ti right now.
CONGRATS MR. J !
Man , i need to Understand more about this ROM / FLASH stuff ... Trying to update a few SmartPhones here :)
So you can get over 100 fps on Metro last light on a 780 @ 1080p?? Gotta test mine!
If you have a CPU that can feed enough frames to it.

Was it fixed? Im here in 2019
im wondering the same
For everyone wondering: Yes, it worked.

I'm here in 2025
Cip Rodriguez was it fixed? I’m here in 2020 :)
2020 Q2
Had similar experience with someone that bought an obvious mining card off of Ebay.. Young guy was losing his mind... Flashed the card and bingo.
This was very informative. I never knew about GPU ROM flashing (though it makes total sense now). Thanks Jay!
Clicked like because the ad for the merch made me laugh out loud :D
Did you make sure on his system the display cable was plugged into the gpu and not the motherboard?
Your buddy's name is JayzTwoCents, and you have a 780 in your build... what did you do wrong?
780's are still pretty strong haha
He has a 1080 build at home...
DarthBloodyVader
Im pretty sure its more than 3 builds unless he sold them
I might be able to tell what happend to the card, there has been issues where Windows driver don't work with custom VBios made with NVflash Certs Bypassed. and makes windows 10 not load the driver with Error 43.
Hell yeah Jay is a car guy too! bad ass hoodie man!
I've had a similar issue with a very old GPU in the past (GT 6600)
This was my temporary card setting up Ryzen while waiting for my card to arrive.
DDU is your friend brother....
good news for gamers : bitcoin is crashing lol(evil laugh)
xLiGHtx it hasn't crashed, but it's definitely losing value.
This is why you should always backup my gpu rom when you got a new card
Ivan Surjadi why, jay just pulled one off the net
Sky Nabess do you think there is every gpu rom available online? i got EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti iCX GAMING 11G-P4-6591-KR and there is no exact rom for it online. Moreover, even in jay case there is subset mismatch, while it usually works just fine, it can cause instability as different subset can mean some component of the gpu maybe different. why taking the risk when you can just use gpu-z to backup your rom with 1 click.
Ivan Surjadi haha that’s unfortunate x)
Ivan Surjadi why i need to backup your gpu rom lol
Not that I don't love most of your videos but the like is specifically for the music in the end section this time. So catchy!
Jazy solves hardware problems buying new one, cannot repair .... Haha
If it was an R9 290 would still be working :D
R9 290 is the card that will never stop kicking :P
My R9 290x barely works 😅
R9 290X since 2013 and only going stronger by every driver release
Scratch my last comment. My video card has a weird seating issue. Has to be forced downwards in PCIe slot and problem goes away.
WMP007 glad to read it.
I have a 960 Pro in a 5.1ghz 8700k...how does your computer restart so fast? Mine takes at least 6 seconds...
very clean install of windows, yours is slowed down by daily usage, happens with windows lmfao
Because of video editing...
Just rewatched it. Didn't notice the cut :P
m.2 ssds
NVME interface takes longer than SATA to initialize. the performance does not translate to boot time
Am I the only one watching and face palming because he doesn't go into the device manager?
He did, but not as quickly as I would have
Sure Lock That's what I'm saying. Lol
Mind = Exploded
No, you aren't. Should have been the first thing. And for all the people saying "DDU!", this was a working system with working drivers before the 780 was installed, so all the driver dicking was unnecessary. Verify the vendor/HW IDs and reflash the nvidia BIOS when those check out.
You're not the only one. It was making me cringe. I would have thought to reflash a bios unless I had modded it to begin with. Good to know.
Never ever thought about going that route. Very nicely done!
Thanks for this Jay. I learned something new. I most likely would have never known to update the rom on the gpu and would have frustratingly given up much sooner.
Destiny 2 is more like 100GB download now :/
Just downloaded it, its 104GB
How about you ditch the 780 and give him a 1070?
how does this video already have 35 views?
Mythical Phoenix
Look at his sub count.
Thanks Jay
After cleaning drivers, testing a card on a test bench... i almost gave up. I tried finding bios rom files. And sure enough, it’s alive again.
My buddy says thanks.
Thank You Jay! Cant believe it worked with just a hair dryer, saved me a lot of money Thanx again!
Flashing a bios is not called a fix, if you reflowed it, yeah maybe.
Joseph Jose OK, explain why it isn't a fix, if it wasn't working before, and it works after, wouldn't that be fixing it? What would you call this if this isn't fixing? Not all problems are hardware based, software can be damaged as well. And BTW reflowing is a temporary "fix" more like putting a bandage on it than anything, really fixing issues that reflowing "fixes" often requires specialty equipment
>wasn’t a fix
>fixed the graphics card
>impeccable logic
reflowing is not a real fix

When I upgraded my CPU it wouldn't work. I flashed my bios and it started working. That's not a fix? What is it?
It's pretty cool seeing the number of people posting that this video saved their video cards. Bet it feels satisfying.
Wow! I've dug through a lot of forums for the Error Code 43 issue when setting up a new GPU - had not seen the ROM suggestion yet, very nice!
Did this work for you?
Thank Jay! I just revived EVGA GTX 780 SC by BIOS update, which I bought for around 20 USD as broken (working w/o driver installed)
GTX 780 is sill a good GPU- Worth saving it's life.
These days it's actually a "profitable" gaming GPU - meaning that it might be more profitable to use high the high end Maxwell and Pascal GPU's for mining / deep learning tasks.
Been having problems with a 780m, and this helped me out. Didnt have to flash the bios, but I will keep that in the back pocket if i run into more problems
Lol, great tshirt commercial. First one I ever laughed out loud at.
I love those jay fix it videos ^^ cause if we dont have the money to build custom watercooling... the fix it stuff... we all need it one day or another ^^'
This is absolutely fantastic as my gtx 570 is doing the EXACT same thing and NOBODY had any idea or answer. Then I see this, I think there was a tear that formed in my eye. If this brings my beloved EVGA GTX 570 back to life I'll be so happy. This will help me last until GPU card prices get back to normal.
Did it?
@@gabllaqwerty No
Luckily you fixed it with GPU's gone from the store shelves... Right on Jay... - Rob from Regina Canada
this is genuinely interesting, thanks for uploading
I returned the only 2060 i could find yesterday with this exact problem! So now I must wait for my 3080 that will ship around summer maybe. I wish I would have come across your video yesterday xD
Very interesting watching you troubleshoot hardware man, keep up the great work!
Thank you so much for this video I had a Quadro K2200 at work that was crashing in Solidworks. We ended up replacing that card awhile ago but i had the GPU sitting around and was testing it. The card would avg 1fps in the Heaven benchmark and display only a limited amount of colors. The system would also freeze up as if the CPU usage was high. I ended up using NVflash and copied the bios from a good card then flashed it to this one and now it is working perfectly. I am so shocked I found this video and the fix worked this is awesome. But one thing ,you have all these cards and you let your boy rock out on a gtx780? Hand him a GPU!!!
Awesome, Jay! Long-live Nick's GTX 780!
These things you don't learn until you get the chance to work on a system eith the issue. That book would be very valuable but a hard job to make..
He also was lucky to slap the trick he knew and it worked. In most cases, it's eBay's 12th consecutive "owner" problem...
Wow J Z IS KING BRUUUUHHHH... Wheres your store or shop if i want something fixed.. ???
I like you a lot, Jay. I really think you got a good personality! You got the right spirit
Every time I see the beginning of the Heaven benchmark I think that someone is going to twist an ankle on those cobblestones.
