Anyone who has studied Macroeconomics would know that this phenomenon is not limited to Punjab , it's global.
A City, State or country initially Flourishes due to a variety of factors including Farm, Industry or service. This attracts a larger migrant population eventually building pressure on land resulting in high land costs. This makes new investments less attractive ( Today it would be much cheaper to setup a factory in Bihar etc than Punjab). As a result new industry stays away resulting in economic decline which in turn results in migration .
Western countries are facing same problem as most jobs have been moved to China, India , Vietnam etc due to cheaper labour. This economic cycle will never stop , it repeats every few hundred years.

Problems of Large Scale Conversion, Village Communism and Punjab's economic decline are interlinked. This notion of "Jatts can only be Agriculturalists" Was Promoted by the Punjab Communists and Kisan Sabha movement in 1970s.Also,there is Jatt Domination taken to the extremes- not any jatt but Big Jatt landlords having complete dominance over the politics, and contempt for everyone else... Stiffling the industry is critical to keeping the lower castes at the bottom of the pyramid, therefore the latter are now leaving Sikhism for Christianity lured by material benefits and in hope of greener pastures.

Exactly! Punjab have never got the benefits from centre which other states enjoy. It is almost treated like a colony. You can tell that Punjabis are genuinely hard working which is why they have maintained some what decent standard on their own. It is being used for resources. Even during the green revolution, it was being used to feed other states and avoid famines. Green revolution destroyed the way people have been growing crops from thousands of years and implemented a foreign, unfamilier way to farming. Its water is being stolen by other states and it gets no money or benefits for sending its river waters to rajasthan, haryana and delhi.
I think Punjab lacking behind in economy is a big deal but bigger problems are still not being address. Its ground water is on the verge of finishing. I feel like there won't be any Punjab anymore in 15-20 years after the ground water depletes.

@amithabv. Sir I think you are writing this comment without seeing this ctc. Thats the whole point if Punjab wants to develop further it has to leave agriculture as it's main contributor for gdp.
The encouragement am mentioning is in terms of industries and service sector. Haryana and Himachal have better health packages and scheme benefits from pmjay. The taxes related to industries are way less in himachal than Punjab.
The parameters in which Punjab is better relates to the people and their nature.
And abt the point of capital it's still so lame that even after decades we are sharing a capital so just can't blame soley Punjab for this. And also fyi chandigarh as per the new ruling of supreme court has been converted into a heritage city. So there is no question of industries and services getting added to the present model of the city.
Regarding monetary funds as a border state. Its governments role to usher in companies and private sector in setting up plants and creating jobs. Now where would these company go? Will they go to the border areas of bhikhiwind ferozpur where brave battles were fought and yet no infrastructure came in or will they go to Gurgaon and other area of ncr "supported" by the sarkar of the day?

They were protecting 1% of middleman whose profit may come down. Don't imagine the Sikhs coming to US, Canada and UK does all kinds of menial jobs and live almost in squalor. When the partition happened the RSS and gurkha hindus were travelling to west punjab to rescue the sikhs and hindus that were being massacred by the thousands by Muslims, they were the ones that gave the sikhs and hindus in east punjab their safety and dignity back.
Congress was the one that massacred the iskhs in 1984, CONGRESS got more popular while the RSS literally got hate for supporting the sikhs being massacred.
The most criticism i have seen from sikhs is that RSS thinks sikhs are hindus, which is stupid because sikhs are obviously different but this is the justification for voting for all the stuff i just presented. Seems very short sided.

As long as the condition of our cities is such, people will leave. Why blame Punjabis alone for wanting to go to Canada/UK? Keralities have been going to middle east for the past 50 years and the dream of most Telugu youngsters is to migrate to US.
Those millenials and GenZ that remain in India are those who don't get a chance or those who aren't good enough to migrate, or they come from so well to do families that problems of India don't affect them as they're so insulated.
Also remember that western countries are hunting for talent. Their population is dwindling and they need immigrants to keep running their welfare states. India is readily providing them both blue collar and white collar labourers. End of the day each individual thinks what's best for him/her. If you get a chance to go abroad, just scoot.

The misfortune of Punjab state started since 1947.The state was not given its due since the very beginning. State 's language was not given due status and statehood on the basis of language was denied to Punjab.Promises made during preparation were ignored by infamous "times have changed now" reply by the Nehru, Gandhi clique. The Bhakhra dam and Nangal Fertilizers were developed to feed teeming masses. There was even a move to substitute the Gurmakhi with Devnagari. When it was resisted they highly Sanskritised the language.
Then came 1966, the State was further devided into Haryana by doling all the hilly areas to Himachal , with no State Capital. Chandigarh has been made a bone of contention purposely.
    Frustration brought 80s and 90s .
Baddi and Parwanoo in Himachal were developed to shift all small scale industry of Ludhiana leading to unemployment.
At present power and water heads are under the control of the Centre. Unemployment is at peak.
The political leaders of the state irrespective of their party, always and all the time failed its hard working people and played in the hands of the Centre to the changing tunes.
At present Punjab is an absolutely ignored State to fend for itself. Now the question what the youth of State should do, well drugs came handy and for those who do not addict look for greener places abroad. What is here for them. Nothing.
At least they go out, earn the money and send it back.
You journalists are much better educated and very well read.
You know that justice was always denied to the State of Punjab unlike Haryana, a pampered State.

All these subsidy policies have ensured that Punjab is good for only farming, and nothing else can happen.
What's the point of vocational training, if you can't get jobs?
ThePrint did an episode in how engg and ITI students were disillusioned by their diploma, as they are no companies to work in.
And why the companies are not there? Because excessive pampering of rice farmers is hurting other sectors of economy.
You don't want to talk about these root causes, and instead give diversionary excuses.

@@rajx7120 well put. Some geniuses don't realise that the service sector is a byproduct of second/third order problems/questions created by manufacturing and industrialisation. Then they wonder why Indians can only innovate abroad and conclude that it's because of Hindu rate of growth, Indian culture, caste, lack of English, greed of the business class, population, low trust society and any other self deprecating narratives.

Your article made me think, What is it that the farmers of Punjab are getting free? They get FREE Power, Free Water, free fertilizer, free seeds, free insurance, free transport of grains etc. So, the government is giving then everything (almost) & new dispensation is even giving this free this free that to other citizens. When you get so many things for free, where does the state get its revenue, by milking its industry to the last drop. The industry will run away in such a scenario. What happened in Bengal. For 34+ years there's freebee governance & when they tried to change it the Leftists were thrown away. The path to reforms is really tough but has to be taken up. Very little choice. I wonder Punjabis are proud people & still they are dependent on Bheekh being offered by governments. Seriously think of it if a family was paying 800 rupees Electricity bill per month, that's 4000/- per year. What do you get in 4000/- per year, not even a decent travel by a train to city like Mumbai. I mean come on, tell the powers that matter shut the PHOKATIYA thing & do the real governance. Punjab can follow what BJP & INC did for Petrol Subsidy. They just increased it in small bits every month till it was done away (technically). Time to really ask questions. KAB TAK YE FREE BATONGE.

@09:30 you always takes an issue and insert your neoliberal ideology and propagandize your oligarch and plutocrat masters talking point.
Punjab could develop urban and manufacturing sector, but your demand that it has to come at the cost of subjecting farmers is pathetic.
You claim punjab needed farm laws, what reform are you talking? are you talking about your masters from Pepsi exploiting farmers?
What are the much needed? South Indian state developing much faster with education and industrial and urban development, but that did not come at the cost of farmers, no one forced the farmers out into urban area and made them to work in industries.
The progress came naturally as generations grow. The farm reform you are talking about is pushing Punjab farmers into poverty and your oligarch master take over their land, that is the reform you are championing.
And Punjab emigration, that has context you misleadingly missed out, Canada has highest Sikh diaspora that was due to refugee emigration in the 80s. When you have more of your diaspora, it is easy and attractive to emigrate, and that is how Gujarat has became traders state.
You take reality totally out of context and spread propaganda for your oligarch neoliberal masters.
Shame on you. No, the Modi farm reforms are not going to save punjab farmers, it is to exploit them and put them into poverty when Punjab is the major food crop producers of India. STOP you propaganda.

Arvind Kejriwal was a sensation in 2012-14. He singlehandedly tore the INC apart and sunk Rahul Gandhi permanently. Modi had the advantage of BJP's pan-India base else; Arvind would have sunk him too. However, Arvind has fallen woefully short. I know many will question what about Modi's promises? I suggest they check the arithmetic. Arvind has stagnated at 9%(impressive for a newbie but far behind Modi). 2014 like Gujarat Model, is the only way to power in modern India. Hanging around with 10th-fail Tejasvi and taking jibes at Modi's qualifications is useless. Unlike INC, AAP holds attraction, is not anti-Hindu, and is free of baggage. At some point, India will grow tired of BJP. AAP needs to make sure that it displaces and replaces the INC to become people's de-facto anti-BJP choice.

JATT sikhs and their feudal mindset are one of the main reasons for this mess, they deny lower castes Sikhs any representation on higher positions may it be SGPC, Govt. of Punjab, Panchayat Elections etc and try to suppress them in the social construct. They try to glorify the caste, drugs, gun culture through Film and music industry which brings more problems to the society. Sikhism and our Gurus never preached discrimination but they shamelessly try to portray their surnames instead of Singh and then claim themselves to the torchbearers of Panth. These are the reasons why many lower caste Sikhs and Hindus convert to Christianity in search of financial benefits and education security of their kids. It's high time we as a Punjab society get our act right and get back the glorious days of PUNJAB back.

Who is responsible - Punjabi itself a self proclaimed high society and believe themselves as superior to other society. I am itself is Punjabi and from Punjab and knows how Punjabi believe they are best and superior and that itself leads to drugs as they took itself as a thing of rich and to show-off.
Second - Govt. again choose by us Akali dal, congress and Aap - the govt. with no vision. Some how captain Amarinder Singh was good but again in the wrong party took the overall Punjab down.
Third- which you rightly said vision to go outside India again came from the same basic mindset to show-off ourselves as superior.
Fourth - A society who doesn’t give importance to education. In Punjab you have landlords in villages and businessman in cities. None of their children wants higher education.
Fifth - A jajbati , stubborn & aggressive mind set. Doesn’t wants to listen. As you rightly mentioned the farm laws are good for Punjab only but with some politics and those landlords doesn’t want that and put the whole society in stupid agitation.

Why can't we just yield punjab and move on? It will solve 2 problems
    :-
The only hesitation felt in India to condemn pakistan is bcz of punjabis their "Eko hi hain" is costing our security, if no punjab India can call out pakistan without any hesitation and treat it like any other neighbour, we could even have an equation of USA and mexico border which is good for us.
    :-
How much we wanna dumb it down but their is a sense of separatism in every punjabi or atleast sikhs, we are letting cancer grow on us and it is also costing resources which could be better used somewhere else for our future, anyways they are more closer to islamists, in sense they are easy to be radicalized, just trade out PoK for punjab and everyone wins!
