Dylan would you consider making a more in depth video on drone maintenance? Specifically preventative maintenance? I've been a pilot for over two years and have no idea what to do for maintenance besides replacing props when they break or get scuffed.
Ditto - I'm a complete novice about to get the 107. Haven't purchased a thing and want to start out right.
Inspection intervals is a good place to start. While on paper doing a pre and post flight serviceability check before and after every flight should suffice, adding a preset maintenance interval can help identify problems early on. Measuring battery life in a controlled environment (hovering indoors in a gym or garage bay on a stopwatch works in a pinch). Inspect for cracks, debris, extensive wear in the moving parts (such a swing arms camera gimbals, and locking mechanisms). Outside of this rough outline. Most other issues will not be identifiable at the operator level.
A maintenance interval would also be a good time to verify inventory accountability and restock parts and consumables such as propellers. Some manufacturers treat other parts such as landing gear as consumables but have replacement parts available for swing arms/motor mounts, ect.

Thanks for the tips. Interestingly I just priced out monthly vs yearly $1M insurance throughout SkyWatch and the yearly came out slightly more expensive. Not sure if that’s inferring they may up their rates during the year, so you’re at least locked in for the year just in case. Thanks again for the vid. Going to check your channel out now.

I believe this is the first time I watched your video. 1stly your content is what I needed to hear/see. I am currently looking to start a drone business. I have yet decided what area I want to explore but I do know that I want it to be my primary source of income.
With that said I am currently looking at getting an Autel Evo V3 Enterprise drone. I am settling on this one os because it doesn't have geofencing and doesn't require force updates. From what I can tell it is a very capable drone. I live in NC (Charlotte area) so I want to be able to do some sort of inspections. I will check more on your channel and see if you provide the information. But I like to know how and where to start in this field (obviously it all begins with a Part 107) what software(s) I could use to start and most importantly I guess how to get clients. Thank you for any help and guidance you may offer.
Hey Dylan, thanks for another awesome and really easy to understand video. Things are very different in Australia compared to US, from what I've researched and experienced so far... Things like - to get a local drone insurance is a bit of a nightmare (but you can, via brokers), but the worst part is that the best imagery etc is captured when drone is (theoretically 🙄) out of your line of sight and you control it via the mobile screen (theoretically. Not like I'd ever do that myself! 🙄) BUT our local guidelines say that we simply flat out can't fly out of line of sight and need to always see the drone with our own eyes. So even with insurance, it anything happens - which it shouldn't if you're properly prepared - the insurance claim would be refused. Just a realistic - international - perspective for you mate.

Most of my jobs don’t require RTK but we do have the m300 RTK and a few custom drones with RTK when needed!

I’m current starting out with intention of focussing on the Construction industry. Could you please advise the best equipment to start with and what to look for when trying to find a Drone Training School?
So in terms of equipment that I recommend, I have a video that I am working on that will cover that in entirety. When it comes to "Drone Training School" there really isn't anything outside of an actual Part 107 which in the description I have a course that I would recommend checking out! Other resources for the drones in the industry is looking at TH-cam videos or other online resources.

I especially like how you talk about the mistakes you've made; that's invaluable information for anybody of us! I'm interested in possibly doing mapping and communications tower inspections. Since I currently only have the DJI Mavic 2 Pro and the Mini 2, I'm considering getting the Inspire 2 and even the new Matrice 30T. For the Inspire 2, which camera would you prefer today? Which payload would you choose for the Matrice 30T? Besides your videos, can you recommend a training course for inspections and/or mapping? Thanks again for your videos! Hey thank you for watching all the I have posted! I would say for the I2 it’s end of life so not really a great time to get it! The M300 is a great option for flight time and capabilities. M30T will have a lot to offer but I still have yet to get my hands on it. In the end it just depends on what you are getting into. I have a lot of friends in the industry who use the M2P for tower inspections

get your LLC, 107 other etc, you get business insurance does the drone insurance cover that part also or do you need to contact a separate insurance company for the business part?
I'm interested in knowing from people in the business if drones are reliable enough that you can put them in remote locations and they can automatically fly a specific route to inspect a property.
My initial need is to keep an eye on my family's cabin in a remote area, but feel there might be a market for this. My specialty is actually software development and satellites and I could actually write software the could upload images to a passing satellite in even thee most remote regions and download them to the internet.
Thoughts from others. Is there a business there?
Hey Dylan, I know this video was 6 months ago so you might not answer but I'll give it a chance.
I'm in my start-up right now, My focus is photogrammetry of all sort and I wanted to have a thermal also. now with your mistake #2 of spreading too thin, it makes me wonder if I should forget the idea of thermal and just focus on photogrammetry work. Also wondering if photogrammetry is still too large and I should focus on only one photogrammetry field like progress updates. I feel like only progress updates will never give me enough job to leave my current job and I also have a bunchhhhh of ideas where photogrammetry measurements would be super useful and I'd like to help companies with this service. What do you think ? I should only focus on progress updates or I should sell my work as long as it stays in the photogrammetry world ?
P.S. the drone I was looking to buy is the EVO 2 Pro enterprise and eventually buy the thermal payload so I don't have to buy a whole new drone for thermal. with this I could do everything that I personally want to do.

I bought an Air2s a few months ago but it doesnt seem compatible with most mapping software. I was going to buy a Phantom for that reason (plus the mechanical shutter) is this necessary?
Until the air 2s (which I have and love) is compatible with mapping software, you won’t be able to use it for mapping unfortunately
Dylan, thanks for all your videos, they’ve answered a lot of my questions in setting up a drone business. Question, I currently own a Yuneec Thyphoon H, 4K30 camera, flies really well and can stay up about 20-23 mins. I’m interested in roof inspections to start my business and was wondering if I can use this drone to get me started and eventually purchase newer gear. The roof software is cloud based and compatible with any drone. Suggestions?
Ooo I’m not sure if that drone is compatible with certain softwares but you can for sure use this drone for entry level inspections!

Would you change pricing when it comes to different industries, such as for oil companies which might have deeper pockets, verses a property management company that might have a harder time justifying an expense?

Phantom 4 Pro v2 If you can find one for a good deal! If you really want a good drone then the RTK version of the Phantom 4 Pro. If you have about $20k then I’d get the M300 RTK with P1 Camera and a few sets of batteries!
also would DJI Care Refresh insurance be good insurance, as drone insurance companies are quite rare where I live
DJI Care Refresh isn't really drone insurance, its more so to just protect your drone if you crashed it. It does not cover general liability and all those fun insurance words haha.

Would you recommend mavic 3 for drone photogrammetry
When he means insurance it means liability insurance, such as if you damage something with your drone. Example your drone crashes into power lines and they have to send electrical engineers to fix it, you are stuck with that bill unless you have insurance that can pay for it. Or maybe your done just browns out and hits someone.

DJI Air 2s, if you are on a tight budget then just the air 2, and even tighter budget then the Mini 2! Check out the other video I posted last week about the air 2s!

It is not. Part 107 is just your certificate authorizing your to fly your drone commercially. Flyer ID is a system on your drone that broadcasts its information (as if it where a manned aircraft) and allows for anyone in the sky to see exactly where you are, what you are and relatively what you are doing in that airspace.

How does one find a "drone mechanic"...Are they qualified? Like, an ANSI tech for your vehicle...Are there legit drone mechanics that go through training and have Certs?

Can I get a pilot license (certificate) or other FAA certificate if I have a felony conviction?
You can get a FAA certificate if you have a felony conviction, unless the conviction is for a drug or alcohol related offense. In that case, you cannot apply for a certificate for up to one year after your final conviction.
If you already have a certificate at the time of conviction, the FAA may suspend or revoke it for up to one year as described in 14 CFR 61.15.
How about Donald Trump, with 91 charges against him, could he be Part 107 certified? 😅

100% possible, especially in industrial places, drone falls in the wrong hole theres a lot of damage that can be caused. shorting high voltage power lines would also be really expensive if it affects businesses that sue for loss of time
What was your most expensive mistake on a job?
It was probably the $5700 mistake where we had corrupt data sets and had to recapture. It was a LiDAR job too so processing is what killed us on cot

I like your videos but you gotta cut the crap out about calling yourself a commercial pilot. Unless you hold a PPL, CPL ot ATPL license then you are not a pilot. You are a very good certificated drone operator. A commercial pilot is someone who has completed their private pilot license, then completed 80+ hours of ground school, logging over 200 hours of manned flight , passing a very difficult exam with 4 sections: general knowledge, airlaw, navigation and meteorology. Unless you have learned this on your own you know very little about airspace rules, radio communication, radio navigation, how to read a VNC/VTA, how to execute a forced approach, how to plan a cross country, altitude selection, transponder use, reading approach charts, etc etc. I dont mean to sound arrogant but I can say all this becasue i am a real pilot. You might be a commerical drone operator and im sure u are really good but you are hurting your self by calling yourself a (commerical) pilot. Until you put yourself into an aircraft, barrel down a runway (or take off vertically) in a manned aircraft with fixed or rotary wings, then you are not a pilot. Im sorry. Otherwise though, i do like your videos. They’re very informative and have good tips and information, despite most of them starting off with you spreading lies calling yourself a commerical pilot. Just think about this. If you fuck up, can you press pause and do u get to go home and sleep in your bed? If the answer is no then you are a pilot… but if the answer is yes then you’re not a pilot.. you’re an operator of a fancy toy that has a lot of very useful applications.
Well I never intended to offend you, I may have missed a word to define what kind of “pilot” I may be. I understand where you are coming from I really do. Just an over simplification as I think most people clicking on this video will know it’s meant for a commercial drone pilot.
I’m a commercial licensed and instrument rated helicopter pilot, as well as a private single engined airplane pilot, with all the requisite hurling and barreling and gliding and VOR’s and blah blah blah.
I’m also a commercial drone pilot, and so the hell are you! The gate-keeping is the lamest thing about aviation in my opinion, manned and unmanned. This video strikes me as the exact opposite of gate-keeping, and is therefore not lame. 👍
Got my bachelors in GIS/remote sensing and now getting my master's in GIS/remote sensing science. This may be a fun pivot for my career. How often are you getting clients to check for crop health? What model is drone deploy using to check for crop health?
