Even though my dad served in the Korean War, he was taught a bunch of knots despite being a fighter plane mechanic. I've still got his seaman's book, and should go learn all those knots. He could still do semaphore (flags) signage well into his 80's.

    Pro Tip: Keeping too small of tag end when you trim the knot can be risky as it can cause to lose a big fish as fish can easily pull the line and free herself. Keeping some tag end of the line allows the knot to clinch down a little more if you hook a big fish that pulls hard. The beauty of this knot is that its getting more tighter when pulled.

    • @guyparker4221
      @guyparker4221 ปีที่แล้ว +2

  • @SomeGuy-vo7we
    @SomeGuy-vo7we 4 ปีที่แล้ว +52

    5 wraps are plenty for monofilament line but you want seven or eight for braided line because braided line is much more slick.
    I would also recommend leaving a little bit of tag when you trim the knot to allow the knot to cinch down a little more if you hook a big fish that pulls hard.

    Uni-knot is my #1 choice for strength, if targetting big fish. To be honest if I am fishing small to medium, mediocre fighting fish I often use the old fisherman's/clinch knot. Its simple and worked my whole life. I used that knot solely for my first 20 years being a fisherman it's hard to stop myself before trying and switch over to uni especially when I need something tied ASAP and fish are biting. Instinct and muscle memory. All my premeditated ties are uni-knot.

    • @ahmetemrecan3880
      @ahmetemrecan3880 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      5 is plenty for monofilament but you should do 8 for braided line because it is so slick.

    An uncle taught me this when I was seven ,but he also said to spit on it when you pull the knot together so the friction doesn't burn the knot.

    • @FTWQ
      @FTWQ  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yep, spit or water definitely helps when pulling the knot together!

    • @deanshaw2128
      @deanshaw2128 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes that’s what he does in the video when he says to lubricate the knot down to the hook.

    • @darrencottam1146
      @darrencottam1146 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@deanshaw2128 ok ,I just watched it again and yes he does use spit ,I didn't realise and just thought he used lubricant. And as a keen fisherman ,I was taught not to get fuels or oils on my rig ( fouls the bait) it's why I said spit.thanks for pointing this out .cheers.tight lines

    • @edphillips2998
      @edphillips2998 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lubricant (I.e. spit) is absolutely necessary for mono, because it stretches. It’s a good idea for braid, but there is some evidence it actually hurts the performance of knots tied in fluoro.

    I’ve used this knot for decades. If I use braid I go through the eye twice and go through the loop 6x. I’ve never had the knot slip or break.

    • @Jay_Wood

      What do you mean “through the eye twice”? Like, at what point do you put it back through the eye?

    I use this knot 95% of the time. It can also be use to join two lines together as a double-uni. The only other" line joining knot" that may be as strong or stronger would be the blood knot. The uni is at the top for strength for tying mono to lures and hooks for me.
