I have shared my tips and tricks in this recipe and this one is prepped without using a pressure cooker and you too try and cook it on an open vessel on low flame, the results would be so so good! The recipe is prepped with very simple ingredients but the slow cooking does it’s magic. I like to cook…I am average at best…I just like being in the kitchen. I have used online recipes for years…with average success. This is by far the best result I have ever had… I am always very hard on my culinary efforts. But thank you…I managed to make s dhal better than I could ever get from a restaurant….very good recipe and instructions….😊

I followed this recipe word by word and voila ! You are amazing Chef Sanjyot ! Those small tips and tricks you provide make the magic, just to give an example, taking out the scum made a huge difference compared to what I have made in the past !
I made this a couple of days ago. I had to wash the urad 6 times until the water came clear. And during the boiling of the urad there was a ton of scum released. Every few minutes I had to skim the pot. But all the fuss was totally worth it. I added finely chopped sweet onion to the tadka, and I used fresh minced garlic and ginger instead of the paste. 3 tablespoons of the Kashmiri pepper is too much heat for my wife and me, so I used 1 tablespoon of red pepper and 2 tablespoons of sweet paprika. It still came out plenty spicy. The result was so creamy and delicious, especially served over Basmati rice, garnished with a little chopped cilantro. Thanks, chef!!
At least I can cook now instead of fast food from outside, I can make anything by just the recipes once, well it's all thanks to you. But still namak mummy hi dal ti hai.
This recipe easily takes 4 hours to cook but the result is mind-blowing! There are times I use the pressure cooker for the dal and later slow cook it with the tomato and butter for 2 hours.

We also used to gather around tandoor to eat fresh roti with home makhani & chatni! I’m in California but my parents never let their Punjabi roots go. Even today we have a tandoor in the backyard & we make daal exactly how explained … we put onion/chilies/ginger/garlic/haldi/tomato all in the clay pot & let it sit overnight …the taste is unbeatable…we also make baingan 🍆 in their for bartha… that Smokey flavor is on point. True food lovers & who appreciate food for a living understand that connection. It’s crazy - no matter how advance we get … our hearts always settle on the original ways & our roots. The daal was superb, though I didn't follow his lengthy recipe. I cooked daal in pressure cooker and just put around 1 small spoon ghee and 1 cube butter- STILL it was awesome! Definitely try!
