- This is an owner's review of a yamaha wr250r. This bike does not have nay mechanical modifications. I am not a professional writer, editor or employee of Yamaha. Just an honest review of a great bike.
Best bike I've ever owned. I've neglected mine a bit after buying a new 250f, took the old r' out for an on/off road loop last week and had a smile on my face the whole time. This bike will do just about anything, and better than people would expect. I'd recommend it to just about anyone, unless it's too tall for them. Great review!

I just got a 2020 today. So far everything seems great. Don't even mind the seat BUT I am short so I am going to change it. But I don't think I need anything else.
I agree, it's a tough bikes! I had an 08 for 8 years and did all the little mods and added a FMF slip on. It has a ton of power for a 250 and it was the most fun for me around the back roads. I felt like a kid again riding that thing ( started out on a Suzuki TS185). I'm sad they quit making them and am looking for another before they are all taken.
lol, my first bike was a TS185 too...been on a XR650L for 18yrs, considering a used WR250R..the XR is too much work these days....

One of the best videos I’ve seen about this bike. Great job on the details and I love your honesty.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the WR's 6 speed transmission vs. the "others" 5 speed. (maybe I missed it?) That was a big selling point for me.
I've done a couple 3-4 day trips on mine and just love it. For my riding style, it can do so much more than the "big" adventure bikes.

+MetaLexxer You're right the 6speed is definitely something I should've mentioned and I just forgot. It makes a big difference at speeds above 55MPH or so. And I agree with you, the narrow frame and 300lbs makes a HUGE difference on the trails, a def plus over large adventure bikes
I really hate seeing someone ride without gloves. My son lost his baby finger in gravel because of no gloves.

Good video. The we250r is discontinued. I hope if a new model comes out it is a 300 and just as good as the 250. I like the blackberries also once you get past the chiggers and ticks
Thanks for the thorough review. I've been looking for a 2nd bike to go along with my FJR. I think this one is perfect. Probably won't get ridden to hard in the dirt, but it'll be great for going on some back gravel roads for my photography hobby.

You are right - instrument panel sucks - no tachometer, no gear indicator. Dual sport bike must have those indicators. Stock one looks outdated. To be replaced with KOSO DB-03R MULTIFUNCTION GAUGE. Rear sproket to be changed to 47.

For off-road oriented dualsports: WR250R/WR250X > DRZ400 > KLX250 > CRF250L > ... everything else hands down. WR FTW!
Great video. Be nice if they could put a high/low range switch in the gearbox like the old honda atc110. Be a rock crawler then.
I'm 6'0 and 210 lbs. This would be my first motorcycle. I'm 90% sure I want it, but the other 10% says get a Honda CB500F...
+GT6SuzukaTimeTrials The CB500f is a great bike but is limited to just street. The WR can go anywhere, I mean anywhere, and its fast enough on the highway to satisfy street riding as well.
Great clip! I'm glad I made it through the berry eating section though because the end of the video cracked me up! Nicely done. Well, your review just sealed the deal for me on which bike to get. Unfortunately, it won't be the WR. I was really starting to like it too but like the previous guy, I'm 5'9" as well.

Just bought mine... Your review hits spot on with how I feel as well. A few misses but all in all a great bike
Though it really isn't that expensive when compared to other 250's because with the yamaha you don't have to or want to change as many things as you would want to with the other cheaper bikes.

Nothing wrong with first gear imo. The bike has to be ridden differently because it's not a low rpm torque monster, its power is in the mid to upper range so just use some clutch and rev yourself out.

If I could find a motorcycle exactly like this but with a little more power (more capable on the highway by a few points), then I've found me the perfect bike.
Well, there are mods for the WR250 to increase HP. You can also upgrade the 250 to at 310 cc.

excellent job. very accurate description of pros and cons. lowered my 2012 w yamalink etc. 'seat concepts' seat will give another inch lower. its a bullet proof bike. I dont think the FMF exhaust system, power commander is necessary. those people that need that should just buy a bigger bike. the bigger sprocket w new chain may be worth it

+Kamotion the seat concepts seat came with my bike when I bought it used. very helpful for me cuz my inseam is 29" short legs! and the seat is very comfortable. there are blogs about cutting down the seat yourself to lose an inch. its a matter of money. I would say if the money doesnt matter buy it. ride safe, bro.

Really liked your review. Honest and thorough with some sweet video mixed in. I heard you say "Georgia" wild blackberries. I know some people I ride dirt bikes with that have dual sports and have some spots in the north Georgia mtn's they like to ride. Just curious on your opinion on the amount of "LEGAL" riding spots there are in the area. I'm about 45 min SE of Dahlonega. I'd love to have a dual sport but not sure if it's worth spending $7k on a bike and not have as many "Legal" spots to ride as I would imagine there is. A buddy I ride & race dirt bikes with lives outside Athens and he and some friends ride from his house to Town Creek and around and say it's a lot of fun. I know it would still be a blast to ride locally around where I like but would like to do some group dual sport rides in the North Georgia Mtns.
This video sounded really honest with pros and cons so would like to hear your opinion on the riding potential. Thanks!
The amount of legal roads in north ga is drying up fast. Just in my lifetime the amount of private land has taken over most of north ga. Still though, there are secret spots locals will let you in on. I suggest joining local riding groups and make new local friends.
Further from the road is better for foraging, great vid brah!

It’s more expensive than the Honda CRF 250 L, but comes with very good fully adjustable suspension, worth the extra money for that alone. I do think you get what you pay for.
Would love to come ride sometime, I live in Savannah looking for some trails to ride in Ga, also got a house in Boone nc, also those blackberries look great !

I would have had to go with the DRZ 400 more horse for the dollar means more power to haul the gear with less wear and tear on the gear train or the engine, if the seat height was not going to be a problem for me but it is so I'm stuck with the Honda 250 L. My preference would be the KLR 650 if I was to go cross country, I figure it would have enough power to handle all my needs going cross country, if I were to do it again. At my age not likely.

The bike def feels tall. I struggle just trying to get a leg over it, and I'm 6' 2"
I had a 2015 wr250r and the speedo is off by like 10 mph so it's top speed Is like 80 81 I recently upgraded to the KTM 500 exc and should never have bought the wr
+Luke Lee Interesting, can you be more specific about why the KTM is a better bike, except the obvious CC difference?
+Kamotion the difference is performance from suspension to cc size just an all around better bike more money but well worth it. the ktm is definitely more dirt ready than street but put a little less agresive tire on the front and rear like the Kenda big Block and you will be street ready I cruise the high way at 70 75 and still have plenty of power for passing

the SEAT.. damn seat DESTROYS ASS... as far as 1st gear?? I ride it like a maniac (2 stroke clutching and shifting habits) so i dont have any real issues with power... pull that spark arrester and add some new holes or keep it out and make your own restrictor plate with holes in it... do this in combination with airbox mod and remove that EXUP bullshit get a plug in EXUP indicator eliminator... and you have a woods monster... i run both Dunlop d606 front/rear... rips and digs offroad and sticks nicely on road... the front was sketchy for a few miles till it broke in.. has a noticeable taller feeling with them both new..

+Daryl Parsons Soft luggage is fine on this bike. You just have to remember the frame weight limit is around 400lbs(I believe) so you can't get crazy with add-ons. But realistically the bike is great for "putting around the moutains" for long weekend rides and camping trips.
I'm only 5 foot 7 and the wr didn't need to he lowered the suspension will break in and lower a little bit not much but was enough for me

+1q3er5 I have done some long trips. Raising the bars has helped a lot with rider comfort. I'm about to add a seat concept seat which I hope makes a big difference. I would not want to ride on the interstate for an extended period time. It only weighs 300lbs so it gets blown around pretty easy

I really like the bike, but that seat height is a killer for me. I'm only 5' 9" and just don't want to buy a new bike and then have to try and lower it like you buddy.

Rear shock is adjustable, I'm 5.9 and have 2010 wr250x with 21/17" offroad wheels so I lowered it, now it's fine. Or u can use Yamalink. With IMS fuel tank it's really awesome allround bike riding everywhere.

Great review, very good points you made. I happen to be in a conflict. I a in between the 690 or the wr. The only thing that keeps me from the wr is highway speeds and the height. The only thing that keeps me from the ktm is the maintenance and the fact that it weighs more i think wet about 30 pounds more (could be wrong). Any input as to how much your buddy spent on lowering it. I am 5'7. Also any input as to how it handles on long stretches of highway? thanks in advance buddy i appreciate your video. P.S.i have a feeling you ent back for more berries later on hahaha.
He spent prob around $300 I guess with the yama link and playing with the suspension. You could also get a SC seat, lowering another inch. I just drove to Moab Utah, around 2,700 miles in two weeks. I couldn't be happier with long distances with this bike. Super comfortable, and cruises all day at 45-70 MPH. The only downside I found with long distance travel is being blown around by the wind. The lightweight worked against me Colorado. Now I am in a decision to continue building this bike toward sport touring or look for another, bigger bike for long travels. Do not under estimate maintenance schedule, especially if you are looking to but 50k on this bike. Hope that helps

I'm thinking about getting a WR250R. What fuses did you need to get? What was causing them to blow?
The headlight fuse and the master fuse has both blown on me twice
sweet bike man. gotta ask u though. what do you think of the front tires street manners. ? im a dr650 guy but after riding these oem trailwings around. im impressed by there street manners and offroad in mild dry stuff. and i get 7 grand out of em. your bike has the 50/50 wings on it. looking at that front tire specifically. i run dunlop d606 out back for dirt. in front im probably going with the front off your bike. taking a two week trip to the southwest soon. you guys seem happy with ur tires. sorry for length of post.
They are good for length, I got over 4k on the back tire and over 5 on the front. However they are not very good offroad. I run almost exclusively Kenda 270s front and rear, they are a lot cheaper than the D606 which is prob the most popular. I am very happy with the Kendas, very good street and offroad.
Kamotion appreciate reply man. thanks. happy to get 5 out of front if i can. i got the 301 put on last week. big improvement over the 41 oem wing that was on there. im an explorer type offroad guy so the tire is perfect for me. its good offroad for the mostly mild stuff i do. i go around truly hairy stuff offroad. it also is excellent on road like my wing was before. im in gnarly traffic among skyscrapers so i gotta have killer street manners.
So I just took the bike out west, around 2,700 miles to Moab. I have to say I now believe the Kendas are more of a 70/30 split Road/dirt. Great road tire but terrible in mud or sloppy conditions. More videos to come :)
Kamotion awesome man. hope u enjoyed it. my trip got cut a little short. dad has health problems. tire for everybody. sure ull find em eventually. saw some austrailian tires that looked like what ur after. moto brand i think. for my style riding. the tw301 front and a stock trailwing out back. for my dr650 is perfect. its my daily driver. work home everywhere. excellent on road. i do lots of interstate innercity riding. emergency dependability is important to me. has to be. as long as i stay out of mud they handle everything i throw at em so far.
how did the bike do in the desert winds at high speed.? i went on some of the tall bridges and overpasses in charleston on my dr. wind comes right off the ocean. i definitely noticed it during the big gusts. both hands on bars for sure. got me thinking. dr650 is the lightest id go on a highway riding bike. hows the 250 on the 80 mph lane?
how about stock suspension? will not require any work for heavier rider when riding more aggressively? e.g. over 200lb
The stock suspension is fine. I’ve been happy with it at 200lbs
How does it compare to KTMs 690? You will probably have taken the KTM into consideration. Where I live it costs about 1500€ more. I guess the WR does it all too, but I'd have guessed you get more "bang for the buck" at KTM... 7000€ for a 250 seems wrong.
+Palcious I did look at the KTMs, but with the WR I was already going down to road of spending more money than I wanted. Honestly, looking back at it I could've bought a used DR200 for $1500 and be doing 90% of what I'm doing with the WR. If money was not an option, I would def go with the KTM
Hey Kamotion What sort of tires are you running on?
would anyone suggest this as a fisrt vehicle for some one living on the the out skirts of pittsburgh we get harsh winters and monster pot holes but i wouldnt ride it on a sludgy or icy day anyways but looking for a not too pricy vihicle to get to and from work like 2 miles away and also around the city and maybe a out of state ride or two but thats another story
+SollyMonster I would totally recommend this bike as a city vehicle. Hell I would aim for all the pot holes. haha. But seriously the 70mpg is wonderful and this bike can hold up to worst weather/potholes/falls everything you can think of. If I ever move to the city this WR is def coming with me.

shitty display? no tach? there is a rev limiter use it. The wr250r may have a very few downfalls but I have never once been disappointed with the display. speedometer and low fuel light is all that's needed. I am glad Yamaha put the extra $$ into the reliability, fuel injection and suspension vs a better display. Christ the first scheduled maintenance is 26000 miles, i bounce mine off the rev limiter daily. What does the display lack that is actually use full? otherwise great video, the wr ownes

Hey guys, i am wanting to buy a new bike. I currently have a 2008 crf230L and it is a rock solid bike. I am 6 foot tall, weigh 160 pounds. would this bike good for me. I also have a fair bit of riding experience.

oh man what a bike ive had about 5 bikes mainly yamahas and kawasakies all great but I really wanted this 250 but being 5'6" basically after this great video leaves me in no doubt im a short shit so sadly will be looking for a basic lower cycle. I have a dog is there anyone out there who can advise me on possibly attaching a economical efficient modern side car you can detach easily and attach quickly and how much$ thanks great video.

the speedo reading is about 11-13% too high, that is one negative of the bike, the speedo is lacking info and give too high speed.
+jack schitt This is true. From the factory in stock configuration the speedo is inaccurate. Fortunately, for about $70 this can be remedied along with any additional gearing / tire diameter changes as well. I do agree with you and think it's a shame it comes stock like that.
MetaLexxer i'm even ok with no tach, no gear indicator. I just dunno how north America and Europe approve the import of WR250R/X with inaccurate speedo. Like Yamaha had to design the airbox with solenoid just to reduce air intake noise to meet regulation but government is ok inacurrate speedo.

how does it do with two up riding?
The recommended fame weight is around 300lbs max so it must be two lightweight riders. However, I've taken my GF out for a couple rides and it actually was very stable with a passenger.

You seem to be holding 80kph. Your soft luggage suggests it's a protracted trip. Your jacket is plastic-thin bellowing in the wind and you have nothing on your hands.
What do you think will happen when you have a front or rear puncture or a tube unexpectedly blows out?
The luggage was attached from a 270mile trip a couple of days before. I was shooting a review video hence why I was not riding with my protective gear on, or ATGAT
