I admire the simplicity and the genius of this approach to solve a this problem,,, since my last post I have gained 5 lbs and I can almost tippy toe, should be flat footed by the end of the month.. :D
I've always had Yamahas, absolutely great company. Grew up with the PW50, PW80, RT100 and now on 2 DT125Rs and a GasGas 250. I'd love to get my hands on a WR250R, looks absolutely wonderful.
I had the same speed wobble on my 2008 WR250X, buddy of mine whose a motorcycle tech said it was because my front forks were too soft. It was DEADLY about like 70mph, turned my front forks all the way in, then backed them out like 3-4 clicks (how it was supposed to be adjusted to my weight around 190ish lbs), and the speed wobble went away completely. I could ride the thing at 90mph for 10min straight and id have zero issues whatsoever.
WR the best dual sport on the market, its really a dirt bike thats street legal, very light weight, great suspension travel, it will go through anything like its cake
Nice first ride, Chase. I'm definitely thinking about getting one now. I love the pros and cons you mentioned. Another well done first ride review. Awesome bro!
Could it be the R and the X have different sprocket setups.. Your X has better acceleration, but the R better top speed. Also, the calmer response is a blessing on loose gravel and sand, it's a lot easier to control the bike... (off road novice here.. :D )
The X has 1 less tooth on the rear, which would be a taller gear (less acceleration) but the 17" wheel probably takes it further the other way so that it does have a shorter FD gearing.
I ride a 2012 wr250r, got it brand new and love it. Being 6' ft tall I flat foot. I have dropped it multiple time (mostly off road), have wrecked it bad on road once, still runs like a champ! Has stock exhaust and I just removed the air cleaner door and that gave it a slightly louder more deeper tone, I feel like it gave a just a tiny bit more in the low end too. Won't ever get rid of mine, go anywhere do any thing on it.
Thanks Chase. I really want this bike after watching you and CycleCruza. I’m 5’7, 200 lbs. I hear getting this bike lowered is expensive. However if I like it, imma make it work
Bike gets faster the longer you ride it. I went over 90+ mph (indicated) regularly. It does lack low end until higher revs but overall it's a good bike!
On your X, check the torque spec on your head bearings and the balance on your wheels. A steering stabilizer is also not a bad idea if you don't have one. Oh, and your gearing on the X is likely shorter too.
The wheels on the bike are bigger than standard street wheels, 21" front and 18" rear. If they kept the street and trail one geared the same it would give the illusion that it is geared down and feels slower to accelerate. Maybe that is why you kept noticing it feeling slow. It would also lower the seat height since normally they keep the suspension the same across street and trail models.
Hey Chase! Nice to see you on the 250R. Although I think some of the statements you made about this bike are wrong (Having owned a WR250X, currently owning a CRF250L and planning to purchase a WR250R) The only thing I want to mention is your comparison of the pep compared to your X. The WR250R has different gearing then the X, which will definitely give it a different feel. And I assume your X is not stock? That also makes quite a difference. That being said, it's great to see this bike ridden and you are totally right about not making this bike a garage queen, the 250R(x) are filthy girls and should be treated as such! :D lol
I never normally watch the first rides this is the second or third I have watched because I only wanted to know if this would be a good first bike for a beginner rider and I got my answer. Thanks Chase
Regarding being "tall" on the bike -- with my WR250x, it's great to be able to see, over medium-sized SUVs, in 20-40 mph urban traffic. To be happiest, keep your speed below 50mph.
I'm 5'6" (15years old) and i have no problem with riding tall bikes, i have a Derbi senda and i have raised it, i have also ridden some of my friends' enduros and i have no problem with reaching the ground, even if i only reach the ground with my toes i have no problem
I owned a YZ dirt bike. It’s the sprocket size ( # of teeth). Your bike (X) has more Acceleration; whereas that bike (R) has a higher Top Speed. Same engine. The power is just distributed differently due to sprocket size. Love Yamahas.
I had to comment on the top speed, after break in I've hit 108 on the speedometer. which is probably about 97-98 mph. my only performance upgrade is the Yoshimura exhaust which sounds great, but doesn't fit the bolt pattern exactly so i don't recommend it for the price.
Cool to see others riding in my neck of the woods. I got my brand new leftover out of the crate 2008 for $4200 out the door from Atlanta Motor World in 2010. I was able to take my test on it and rode it for a year or so and sold it for more then I paid for it. It is a great dual sport for the money. My 05 DRz400s was $3400 used and I sold it for the same and it was already moded with all but the pumper carb and big bore. But even stock would be a more powerful start but the weight on th DRz is higher 317 lbs then the WRr 295 lbs. The WRr has less power then the DRz so it takes a lot longer to get up to top speed but once there the vibes are less because 5th and 6th gears are so high. The DRz is always looking for a taller gear. The low end torque are where the DRz wins this category 32.5 HP and 24 FP at 6700 rpm vs the WR250r 23.5 HP and 14.4 FP at 8250 rpm. Getting the wheel up take the WRr needs a clutch up or to be in the + 8000 rpm spot. The DRz400s is just a power wheelie. The WRr is a stick bug with a soft rear suspension and a stiff front which is odd. The DRz has more even suspension. The WRr is better looking more modern and a bit lighter but feels way lighter. The DRz is a bulldog with way more power and lower rpm torque make it better off and on road but the lack of a 6th gear (shame on Suzuki) make it vibe more.
Great vid. I've been saving up for it. You kept calling it a supermoto but it's considered a dual sport. You can get aftermarket rims and tires to mod it supermoto. I know some owners get a different size sprocket to give it more quickness and low end power but it takes away from the top speed. Also you said there's a 450 version (of said bike in vid) but the WR250R is the only available C.C. option for that model (unfortunately). Later.
My WR250R speedometer was about 10mph off at 90mph. In reality it tops out at about 90, but at that speed it would indicate 100. SpeedoDRD fixed that issue cheaply and easily. There are headwinds though that will kill your top speed considerably, I've had it pinned out at 70-75mph a few times. That being said, I also have a '99 WR400F street legal, and the 250 handles the street MUCH better. Power wise, the 400 has 48hp vs 27 on the 250, but past 70mph the difference feels considerably less.
As a WR125X holder I've checked this bike quite a bit. This is an expensive bike coming along with some issues: - Brake/clutch levers are designed to break at first fall. - Mirrors are designed to get broken. You can take them off for off roading but be careful while putting them on. The mount is aluminum and you can screw it with slightest misalignment. - Handle bar is prone to falls. Many riders suggest to change it with a thicker aftermarket one. It bents easily. - Why there is no proper skid plate for this price? Are there any off roaders taking them off for weight saving? - Signals, headlight and exhaust designs are terrible. - This bike is a perfect base for light adventure riding. They should learn from CRF 250 Rally. This model needs a design upgrade. They can offer an adventure package which you can buy or diy later. They need a design upgrade fr that first. Consider the price gap between CRF 250 and this bike and tell me if I am wrong.
hey buddy great review ,,The WR250r's get more power the more you ride it ( after it gets broke in ) I have the 2015 & 2016 models ,,out of the other dual sports ,,these rock ride safe my motorcycle brother,,,liked ( thumbs up )
plz guys this is NOT a supermoto, it is a DUAL sport, it can easily be converted to a supermoto by installing road tires and a smaller front wheel. Dual sports are sort of like dirt bike setups, with more manageable, civilized engines. Can't believe chase really doesn't know the difference though, great channel tho
Until you set up the suspension with proper rear sag and fork/shock clicker positions, the handling can be all over the place. Also, proper tire pressure, chain alignment and proper front wheel tightening all play a huge role. My WR did the same thing on the highway approaching 70, got home, set sag, adjusted the clickers, chain was slightly misaligned, redid the front wheel and it was solid after. You can also adjust the front and rear height to change stability, turn in quickness etc.....
just bought a 2015 wr250r with 144 miles. Nothing has changed in 2017. you're going to want good taller bike for the suspension. I'm 5'9 220 pounds I can't reach either lol. one foot is good enough
@6speed noda because it's not a ktm or husquavarna and he probably a yamaha hater...they are good off road and fling dirt lots of traction forget the knobbies maybe not the best on road bike though because of comfort it's uncomfortable long rides
I just picked up a Yamaha TTR230 (2016) and am taking off the snorkel, rejetting the carb and changing the front sprocket and am thinking of adding a street legal setup out here in AZ. Stock it's pretty weak, but hoping the mods will help since it's even lighter than the WR. Anyone drop some knowledge on street legal kits and are they worth it?
Probably the reason you felt your 250 have more power is because of those off road wheels. They actually decrease top speed and such, but as you mentioned, offer a good bonus for offroad riding.
The reason the R is a little better than the X on the highway is the bigger wheels giving you lower effective gear ratios. You can get R wheels and then supermoto tires sized for them and your X will run like this R on the highway. That's also the reason your X feels more peppy.
If you gain weight you'll compress the suspension more, then you can touch the ground. Problem solved.
Tippytail McKitty get ripped
Or add supermoto 17" rims, and that'll do it :-)
Working on it now, my second slice of pie...............
rofl I should be good then!
I admire the simplicity and the genius of this approach to solve a this problem,,, since my last post I have gained 5 lbs and I can almost tippy toe, should be flat footed by the end of the month.. :D
I work at Yamaha in Japan and have seen these leave the production line.
The frame is probably made at the frame production line next to me.
Great bike, I’m sad they aren’t going to be available in the USA in 2021. I’m going to have to find a a 2020.
WR 250 FUCKEN AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
cycle cruza XD
LETS GO FOR A RIDE
hahahaha I pictured cycle cruza saying that
SOME OFF ROAD ACTION!
This video needs some SLIDE ACTION!

Roy Diedesch but seriously, why would you want or need to ride a bike like this that fast.?
@@14moldyhamsandwich what?? Why would you want what? Why would you need what??????? Huh???
WR the best dual sport on the market, its really a dirt bike thats street legal, very light weight, great suspension travel, it will go through anything like its cake
You took me a ride down memory lane while checking out this bike. I recognized so much of the area, grew up near there.
For sure.. the R has really tall gearing stock.
yep the X has a road friendly short gearing for acceleration and the R has taller gearing so you dont spin wheels in the dirt like you said
ElectroMoto it's also the bigger wheels, the R has I think 21/18 front and rear wheels while the X has 17/17s
The X has 1 less tooth on the rear, which would be a taller gear (less acceleration) but the 17" wheel probably takes it further the other way so that it does have a shorter FD gearing.
Why do they like to remove the kick starter sooo much just to save a lb or 2 :( I'd always love to have a backup in case of bs electric issue.
Srib I agree with you
Just bump start it... not really a big deal
Ikr
It's a 250, bump start it lol, not that I don't agree but it's not the end of the world like some people make it out to be.
yeah there is a lot of things they could have done instead
I used to have an 08 wr 250 and I almost only used it off road. amazing bike 👍
Absolutely love my 2015 WR250R. Already has 10000 miles on it !
I ride a 2012 wr250r, got it brand new and love it. Being 6' ft tall I flat foot. I have dropped it multiple time (mostly off road), have wrecked it bad on road once, still runs like a champ! He's 5' 10" allegedly, basically the average height. His height isn't the problem, his attitude to tall bikes is.

Ok mate
Just grow taller

You recommend this for a 65 year old, I've dropped my 650 vsrtom off road to much. Great video
Well edited. No stop flashy title with up-beat music that is cringy. very subtle yet nice. Keep it up!
way tall, 2016 had a recall, my friend own one and couldn't ride it until parts for the recall arrive, I'm super happy on my crf250l
You kept referring to the bike as a supermoto. It is not a supermoto it is a dual sport.
"This bike is so light.... like a tank."
Chase, I'm guessing your X is geared differently that's why the R feels weaker.
Thanks Chase. I really want this bike after watching you and CycleCruza. I’m 5’7, 200 lbs. I hear getting this bike lowered is expensive. However if I like it, imma make it work
I’m the same height and weight. I plan on getting this bike as well, but I am more into the supermoto scene
as someone who started off road 15 years ago. you dont want to have your feeg down That's how you break a foot

Daniel Reimer doesn’t everybody put a foot down in sharp corners?
@@chrisb7051 yeah, but you are also leaning to the side you're turning.

Let's do some hooligan shit
Urban fuckery
Bigger wheels, less acceleration but higher top speed, obvious really
Thanks for doing a review on this bike. I have been looking at this and I think this one is the bike Im gonna buy.
another slick edit👌 gotta definitely add a supermoto to my riding options, they are just way to man fun
I love this bike i got a 2011 wr250x as my daily and the wr250r as my offroading
Bike gets faster the longer you ride it. I went over 90+ mph (indicated) regularly. It does lack low end until higher revs but overall it's a good bike!
Chase can you make a video showing how to lower it
On your X, check the torque spec on your head bearings and the balance on your wheels. A steering stabilizer is also not a bad idea if you don't have one. Oh, and your gearing on the X is likely shorter too.

now review the crf250l please
does everyone go 90mph where he is?
On my WR the speedo indicates around 6mph more than the actual speed. So probably traffic is moving at about 80
Meade Helios Georgia, especially Atlanta area is notorious for heavy traffic moving at 90mph
any reasoning behind this?
try outside of Chicago 4am and everyone is driving 90+ in a 45
Meade Helios yes here in Atlanta you will piss people off if you go the speed limit.
just what I was waiting for, thanks!
shoulda challenged that other bike to a wheelie competition! Another great video chase! Thanks
RR Rov. Rides a ZZR. Huh? haha

It's a dual sport, not a dirt bike or super moto.

I am not sure BUT I'm sure that they have a power indicator u can change mode's....

Would you recommend the go pro hero session as a starter motovloging camera or would you go with the original GoPro
Do they still build these as two strokes like they did in the 90's?
China Plate Productions No, but they make 3 stroke versions
Probably the reason you felt your 250 have more power is because of those off road wheels. They actually decrease top speed and such, but as you mentioned, offer a good bonus for offroad riding.
What helmet is that? It looks amazing!
hey chase can you do a first ride on a chopper?

Awesome! Maybe because it has bigger tires it goes faster?
The reason the R is a little better than the X on the highway is the bigger wheels giving you lower effective gear ratios. You can get R wheels and then supermoto tires sized for them and your X will run like this R on the highway. That's also the reason your X feels more peppy.
