Hockey like Soccer is a world sport. There are a lot of non North American players in the NHL which you can’t say for NBA, NFL or MLB. If only NHL got out of its own way and properly marketed their players.
I do and I don't. As a person that collects to just collect having a lot of people gunning for cards just cause the prices for us casual collectors to sky rocket and get annoying.
Now primarily a hockey collector (formerly decades of baseball), I fully approve of this video. There was a lot of ground to cover and I think you managed to touch on most of it.
Worth noting, similar to baseball with teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, and perhaps the Cubs -- hockey also has teams that seem to fetch a slightly higher premium for comparable caliber players. Bruins, Avalanche, Canadians, Rangers, Penguins stars and rookies seem to get 5-10% more for similarly skilled and hof track players.
@@ozsportscardcollector4720 Agree 100% on Toronto, but being a Bruins fan I'm never looking for any of their star cards so slipped my mind. lol [and I'm way late to the game to get in on Matthews at the current entry price points for his cards worth collecting]
Hockey is easily the best sport, but the league sucks. It would be nice to see talented players protected more from low talented goons making dirty hits.
Love seeing some support for hockey card collecting. I started channel during the middle of last year and the community seems to be growing exponentially! I'm very excited for what's to come!
I know this is an old video but I’d like to add that in my opinion the hockey hobby boxes are some of the most fun to open. Interesting inserts, tons of cards, overall just awesome to keep someone entertained
O pee chee platinum is the new #1. It was the biggest riser of the year and one of the new hobby favorites. Equal to Topps Chrome, the parallels are highly treasured.
I've collected sports cards since the 60's and hockey has been a love of mine. 10's of 1000's and thats about 10% of the rest of my collection ( baseball, football, basketball, Nascar). Love my hockey cards!:-) love your show! Keep em coming.
Great video! I also feel like the o-pee-Chee platinum is an important set to mention! It’s hockey’s “chrome” product as of now. A lot of the prices have gone up on major players within the last year, and the marquee rookie cards offer a much lower pop count than the young guns!
One thing that's very important is mentioning "True Rookie" cards. Usually, they're the first card of a player in a sequentially numbered set but not all sets
Thanks so much for this! Appreciate the hockey love. I’m almost entirely a hockey collector. I agree the populations are insanely small. Some big HOFers have less than 20 psa 10 cards in opc and Topps
Geoff, I told myself 6 months ago that hockey was a sleeping giant. The good thing was at that time no one in North Carolina wanted them so I was picking them up raw and graded very inexpensive. I have amassed a very nice collection since. Wayne
Played and collected my whole life. Only market that’s been up in the last year is hockey and vintage baseball. That’s not a reason to collect it. Collect what you know and love.
The only reason PSA grades 2% hockey is that they make it such a pain in the ass and so expensive(shipping and import duty charges) for Canadian collectors and investors to grade their cards. If PSA(or SGC or Beckett) opened grading locations here in Canada, the number of graded hockey cards would skyrocket considering 90% of the hockey card industry is located in Canada.
Agreed. My entire collection is Hockey. I never had any interest in baseball cards as a kid. Getting cards graded here would be a nightmare with shipping and costs at the moment (I have actually been advised against it). Most card shops in Ontario (especially northern) are primarily Hockey Cards, so this is a shocker to me lol.
NIce, love seeing hockey getting the love. I picked up a raw Ovechkin Future Watch auto for $280 almost 10 years ago and was scared. It was the most i paid for a card by a mile, its gone up a little bit... i did ok
Great Video! I've been collecting hockey cards for a long time so it's nice to see the sport/hobby get some love. One thing you touched on what could have been covered better was the different grading services for cards. BGS is the highly preferred grading service for modern hockey. For example a BGS 10 McDavid young gun is worth around 10k where a PSA 10 McDavid Young Gun is worth around 5k. There is a big difference in the values... this is the same across the hobby with modern hockey cards. When it comes to vintage cards though PSA and SGC are valued a lot higher than BGS vintage.
The latest set to really boom is the O-Pee-Chee platinum set. Has on card autos and has a similar feel to Prizm with all the coloured variations. I would put it as a top 4-5 set in the hockey market to collect.
We are many collectors focus on hockey! What I noticed with other hockey card collectors is that we are very passionate about our sport. We usually only focus on that sport ! This is obviously by far the most popular sport in terms of collecting cards !
Might get back into collecting cards, the 05-06 fleer ultra cards were beautiful when I was younger. I collected them like crazy. Wish there was another set of modern age players that cards looked just as nice.
One of my favorite things about hockey is the fact that you only get 7 young guns in a hobby box. Compare that to a topps series one for baseball where you get flooded with rookies, ultimately making even the big pulls not that valuable. It makes collection fairly affordable while offering great returns on investing
you did a fantastic video, just one little correction. you said Maurice Richard (Richard like the first name sound) where as its Maurice 'Rishard'. but overall very accurate and comprehensive video

I thought for sure you were going to mess this video up. But you didn't. You hit it out of the park. We (Hockey cards) do have a 90's junk wax era as well. The young guns of the 90's are not the same. They were not short printed so don't have as high of values. I think it was 2002-03 they started coming one every six packs. The exclusives /100 and High gloss /10 young guns are the big chase cards that have been around a lot longer then Canvas/Clear cut etc. Just like other sports, if ripping buy hobby not retail if your chasing the big hits. The best part of the video is when you pronounced Richards name wrong :) Go Leafs Go.
One card variant that's a unknown to most collectors is the rainbow speckled Ygs. Most collectors wont sacrifice 15 base ygs for one speckled. I have a handful of them that's I'm lking to get graded. Such as Svechnikov, Merzlikins, Batherson,Kakko, and more. A Kaprizov and Makar just sold for big bucks recently on ebay
The Quality of Production in manufacturing of these cards, especially in the early 70's and 80's seems to make it very difficult if not impossible to get the desired PSA 10 needed to be competitive in the card trading landscape
Upper deck has become the EA of hockey cards. No competition, same watered down product year after year. Once someone else is allowed to enter back into the market on a licensed basis, maybe I’ll start buying boxes again. Grading a Canadian hockey card can be money wise and very interesting for your wallet, especialy the McDavid one of corse! The Connor Mcdavid Young Guns has a pop. report of 176 at Mnt ( Canadian grader ) with only one "10". Mnt is known for grading tough. There is no way you send in 176 cards to PSA and only get 1 "10". Good to know for investment purposes and possible flip potential. i wouldn't hesitate to buy a card graded by Mnt or KSA for that matter.

It’s less about least desirable and more about the volatility comparison. Both a pitcher and a goalie can find themselves in serious trouble after only a few bad appearances. One bad season is make or break for goalies. Hence the comparison.
