      This is beyond beautiful. My friend was a huge fan of yours, the Bass Gang and the Wellermen as well as the biggest Tolkien need on the planet. She said from the audio this was her favorite version of Misty Mountains, unfortunately she passed away this week before this video was released. So, on behalf of ShadoKat, thank you for bringing the true beauty of this song out. You did amazing.

    As a bass singer, I wish so badly I could take this video back in time to show my choir teacher from HS that bass voices can make beautiful music. She more or less made myself and my whole section feel like we should be ashamed for having even a hint of power that might overshadow her precious sopranos.

    • @Clair1801
      @Clair1801 2 ปีที่แล้ว +292

      All the men in this video have more beautiful voices than any soprano I’ve ever heard. If you’ve got a bass voice, and can use it well, do so and ignore the naysayers.

    This is why I love Tolkien. His world wasn’t just swashbuckling and heroism, his world felt lived in. Songs like this remind the reader that the characters had deep and rich histories and felt loss and kinship.

    • @TDragonus
      @TDragonus ปีที่แล้ว +36

      A lot of modern stories have paper-thin settings, characters and worlds because the emphasis is on events that the reader is the primary audience to. But what do those events even mean if they don't have the context needed to answer every question the audience would have about them? Its a huge mistake not to develop the setting and then focus on individual plotlines.
      Arda was J.R.R. Tolkien's life work, and he spent long years from his youth and up to his dying breath developing it. He created entire languages, songs(such as this one!), cultures, races, worlds, villains, heroes, gods and everything in between first -- and then he wrote his books. The setting and everything in it was immaculately fleshed out, and only after that could he consider himself confident enough to share it with us.

    • @Notcrates
      @Notcrates ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@TDragonusI think your first part is a wonderfully telling scope into what made the first 20 movies of the MCU good as opposed to the recent ones. Everything is just events with characters who aren't fleshed out and a world that refuses to expand in any meaningful or revolutionary way, as opposed to everything before, from the fantastical heights of Asgard and cutting-edge architecture in Wakanda, to the changing worlds of people who may not even be right, evolving & questioning themselves for movies on end like Tony, Rogers, and even Thor.
      Their new pivot towards black-and-white conflict without a villain in the right or in survival burns them through plots faster than you can imagine, leaving us with unlikeable protagonists who are always right.
      I'd make another contrasting comparison with the internal struggles of the Wizards, Hobbits, Elves, or even just Gollum, but I've ranted for plenty long already.

    2:18 - 2:40 is honestly one of those moments in music where the entire point of the piece is summed up in one perfectly executed build up. the complexity of harmonies outside of the ranges you would expect from a group of basses with the simple aesthetic of just being able to see their faces is absolutely genius. the focus was on the music here and seeing so many people I follow in one place for a collab warms my heart. I dont know. I think it's on point. Like. It's got some olden days viking type history. If you imagined they didnt have a radio and had to make their own music. So it embodies the idea of everyone singing differently their style . but keeping rythem and harmonizing together... around a fire. Telling tales of the day the dragon came ....long ago..
      Dont thing IRL it would sound as good in that context but think that's the feel they meant to give.

    Far over the Misty Mountains cold
    To dungeons deep and caverns old
    We must away, ere break of day
    To find our long forgotten gold
    The pines were roaring on the height
    The winds were moaning in the night
    The fire was red, it flaming spread
    The trees like torches blazed with light
    The wind was on the withered heath
    But in the forest stirred no leaf:
    There shadows lay be night or day
    And dark things silent crept beneath
    (Aaaahh aaahh...)
    The wind went on from West to East
    All movement in the forest ceased
    But shrill and harsh across the marsh
    Its whistling voices were released
    Farewell we call to hearth and hall!
    Though wind may blow and rain may fall
    We must away ere break of day
    Far o'er the wood and mountain tall

      It's not too late. Find a community ensemble to audition for. I trust with the number of years of experience you have, you can prepare some amount of an audition for yourself. If you have difficulty finding something, try contacting whoever you sang with last. Perhaps they could be a music home again, or at least give you some recommendations.
      But, you didn't ask for advice. My knee-jerk reaction is to help a poor wayfaring singer find their way home, because I know what it feels like to be lost and the amazing feeling of coming home to the music (all the rest is just details.
      My heart yearns out right now for my choir to resume next month. I've been away from it for 2 years now due to covid, and I can't wait to be back. Blessings, my brother.

    Far over the Misty Mountains cold
    To dungeons deep and caverns old
    We must await, ere break of day,
    To find our long forgotten gold.
    The pines were roaring on the height,
    The winds were moaning in the night.
    The fire was red, it flaming spread;
    The trees like torches blazed with light.
    The wind was on the withered heath,
    But in the forest stirred no leaf:
    There shadows lay be night or day,
    And dark things silent crept beneath.
    ... ?...
    The wind went on from West to East;
    All movement in the forest ceased,
    But shrill and harsh across the marsh
    Its whistling voices were released.
    Farewell we call to hearth and hall!
    Though wind may blow and rain may fall,
    We must await ere break of day
    Far over wood and mountain tall.

      highly recommend checking some of their stuff out on youtube

    I'm a Tenor who's voice is currently changing and this just inspires me. Hearing the depth of each voice mixing makes me wonder if I'll ever reach this level of pure talent.

    I've always loved the bass, be it in heavy metal, classical music, or the church organ, but as always there isn't anything that compares with the human voice. This really takes the tops. Incredibly beautiful
