As a deep bass, it makes me so happy to hear a leading bass. When I was growing up, my voice could hit these same notes, but every teacher I had forced me to sing an octave higher to match the others in the choir. Happened so much that I dont think I can even do it any more, but now I have to practice and try to do it again
It used to make me feel so unique cause I was a tiny little shit that could scare people by dropping the beat in the middle of a song

Patrick, you should be able to do it still! The voice usually deepens a little more with age. Just take a good enough breath. Lower notes let more breath out.

I never sang outside of church or karaoke a couple of times, but I loved to stretch out the low notes and heads would turn, wondering where the subwoofer was...one of our friends told us his kids called it my "monster voice" because it scared them. I would have sounded just like everyone else, but worse, if I tried to stifle that bass. Embrace the bass, brother.

There actually seems to be a resurgence of Bass and Baritone-Bass interest lately. I think people are just "over" high notes. Once you learn that high placements still allow for strong chest resonance with a good mix you then realize hitting those high notes is actually very easy. It's going low with enough resonance that is always hard. There is also a bit of a resurgence in interest with Contralto voices thanks to singers like Diana Ankudinova. Although she's a little different due to her harmonics, she doesn't need to use vocal fry to get subharmonics.

Hilariously enough, it’s hard to tell if Tolkien would have liked this. He notoriously found most contemporary Lord of the Rings fans pretty cringe, and he thought that most fan works utterly failed to capture the depth and scale of his writing. I’m honestly not sure there were any adaptations he genuinely liked, and he sadly died long before Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies came out. I guarantee he would have loathed the Hobbit movies as a whole, and he would have despised how Thorin, Fili, and Kili were adapted. This adaptation of his song, though, he might have at least been ambivalent to, and in perspective, that’s an incredible compliment!

Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day
    To find our long-forgotten gold
The pines were roaring on the height
The wind was moaning in the night
The fire was red, it flaming spread
The trees like torches blazed with light
The wind was on the withered heath
But in the forest stirred no leaf
There shadows lay be night or day
And dark things silent crept beneath
Farewell we call to hearth and hall
Though wind may blow and rain may fall
We must away, ere break of day
Far over the wood and mountain tall
We must away! We must away!
We ride before the break of day!

I discovered this around a year ago and it's still my favorite version of this song. The music and background vocals move over the words so beautifully and dark. The driving sweeping rocking drum is simple but very effective, it's powerful and very fitting. I don't know who selected the the additional lines from the poem but I haven't heard the second half sung to this music anywhere else. They're some of the darkest, and most mysterious verses in the original piece by Tolkien. Whoever made that choice, it was brilliant. I'm happy this got more attention than the movie soundtrack version, not to knock it at all cause it's amazing and the reason we have this composition/melody for these words but it's way too short. This version feels so much more complete. *(Some of my musical terms may be incorrectly used)

When I was a boy, I saw the animated Hobbit and became fascinated by the Dwarves and their songs. It led me to a lifelong love of Tolkien's works. As an adult, I saw the Hobbit films and was enraptured again by the wonderful sounds of the Dwarves chanting and singing. Yesterday a friend told me of the tragic death of Orson Bean, the beloved voice of Bilbo Baggins in the animated Hobbit, back in 2020. He was the last of the voice cast from it still alive. But now he is gone, leaving a great hole in my childhood memories. Then I heard this amazing version and was moved to tears by the obvious love and respect his performance conveys. Thank you Jeff for giving a little bit of that old joy and wonder back that we felt so long ago. Peace and long life to you, my friend.

I would love to hear the 20 minute or so version with ALL the lyrics:
Far over the Misty Mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day
To seek our pale enchanted gold
The dwarves of yore made mighty spells
While hammers fell like ringing bells
In places deep, where dark things sleep
In hollow halls beneath the fells
For ancient king and elvish lord
There many a gleaming golden hoard
They shaped and wrought, and light they caught
To hide in gems on hilt of sword
    On silver necklaces they strung
The flowering stars, on crowns they hung
    The dragon-fire, on twisted wire
They meshed the light of moon and sun
Far over the Misty Mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day
    To claim our long-forgotten gold
Goblets they carved there for themselves
And harps of gold, where no man delves
There lay they long, and many a song
Was sung unheard by men or elves
The pines were roaring on the heights
The wind was moaning in the night
The fire was red, it flaming spread
The trees like torches blazed with light
The bells were ringing in the dale
And men looked up with faces pale
The dragon's ire, more fierce than fire
Laid low their towers and houses frail
The mountain smoked beneath the moon
The dwarves, they heard the tramp of doom
They fled the hall to dying fall
Beneath his feet, beneath the moon
Far over the Misty Mountains grim
To dungeons deep and caverns dim
We must away, ere break of day
To win our harps and gold from him!
The wind was on the withered heath
But in the forest stirred no leaf
There shadows lay be night or day
And dark things silent crept beneath
The wind came down from mountains cold
And like a tide it roared and rolled
The branches groaned, the forest moaned
And leaves were laid upon the mould
    The wind went on from West to East;
All movement in the forest ceased
But shrill and harsh across the marsh
    Its whistling voices were released
The grasses hissed, their tassels bent
The reeds were rattling--on it went
O'er shaken pool under heavens cool
Where racing clouds were torn and rent
It passed the Lonely Mountain bare
And swept above the dragon's lair
There black and dark lay boulders stark
And flying smoke was in the air
It left the world and took its flight
Over the wide seas of the night
The moon set sail upon the gale
And stars were fanned to leaping light
Under the Mountain dark and tall
The King has come unto his hall!
His foe is dead, the Worm of Dread
And ever so his foes shall fall!
The sword is sharp, the spear is long
The arrow swift, the Gate is strong
The heart is bold that looks on gold
The dwarves no more shall suffer wrong
The dwarves of yore made mighty spells
While hammers fell like ringing bells
In places deep, where dark things sleep
In hollow halls beneath the fells
    On silver necklaces they strung
The light of stars, on crowns they hung
    The dragon-fire, from twisted wire
The melody of harps they wrung
The mountain throne once more is freed!
O! Wandering folk, the summons heed!
Come haste! Come haste! Across the waste!
The king of friend and kin has need
Now call we over the mountains cold
'Come back unto the caverns old!
Here at the gates the king awaits
His hands are rich with gems and gold
The king has come unto his hall
Under the Mountain dark and tall
The Wyrm of Dread is slain and dead
And ever so our foes shall fall
Farewell we call to hearth and hall!
Though wind may blow and rain may fall
We must away, ere break of day
Far over the wood and mountain tall
To Rivendell, where Elves yet dwell
In glades beneath the misty fell
Through moor and waste we ride in haste
And whither then we cannot tell
With foes ahead, behind us dread
Beneath the sky shall be our bed
Until at last our toil be passed
Our journey done, our errand sped
We must away! We must away!
We ride before the break of day!

After noticing that loading Sixteen Tons wasn't much of a challenge anymore, The Geoff quadruplets took things up a notch and dug their way down through the mines so much they ended up in Middle Earth amongst the best miners of all, Dwarves, who saw them as kin. Tank Top Geoff on the right was rewarded with a mithril Tank top for his skills to go deeper and deeper without stirring ancient demons awake. Actually, the Balrog in Moria got utterly curbstomped by one of Geoff's chest-fry notes, and Saruman took notes because he found this man had a more compelling voice than he did. • @rashkavar

There's genuinely a part of me that wishes this was the style the movie went with. I could easily see this sort of super-deep singing being a hallmark of a fantasy species like the Dwarves of Middle Earth - a people generally broad of chest and deep of voice seems like an ideal species to have lean into the bass end of singing. Also, while it's been long enough since I worked in a mine that I no longer remember, I think deep sounds carried better underground, which would make it a good choice for a species known to be fond of subterranean dwellings. ...Though that could have just been that it was more capable of penetrating the earplugs we had?
Personally I like the idea of making fantasy species more distinctive from humans than just "they're short and stout and like digging" and giving them a distinctive musical tradition seems like a good cultural angle. And...sure, you could go for something totally alien sounding, but that's likely to just sound jarring and unpleasant, which is not the goal here. You'd want something distinctive that fits other aspects of the culture and still sounds good, all of which this piece achieves. (Indeed, I also have a much more succinct argument for using this version: it sounds substantially better!)

    • @rashkavar
      @rashkavar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +53

@@ling2186 I....know? My comment is about how much better of a choice this style of deep vocal a capella might have been, compared to the song as performed in the movie.
Because the Dwarves of the Tolkien universe (and pretty much every other fantasy world) are not human, it makes sense to give them a unique musical tradition. This could have passed for that. The song in the movie does not.
(I'm finding myself constantly having to choose my words carefully here, because I by no means want to suggest that the singers of this piece are somehow inhuman. But human music has to suffice unless we can find actual dwarves and ask what their music is like....this does not seem probable in the immediate future. So something a little more unique and special would have worked better. IMO. But then, there's a lot of things that would have worked better in the Hobbit movies.)

Rose of Sharon is correct. The fact he has an higher upper register than some bass singers does not mean he’s a bass-baritone. The requirement for basso profundo is the ability to hit the second C below Middle C (whereas a normal bass can hit the second E below Middle C). I GUARANTEE this guy hits that or even lower. He’s what Opera would term a “Voice of God” basso profundo, as classical operas which had a role for God put the part “in the basement register” to make it sound - well - god-like 😆 Not many of those operas can be performed nowadays, because there aren’t many basso-profundi around to sing the key role.

    • @sithlordbinks
      @sithlordbinks 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@SgtKenway He chests a G#1 here (which is 4 half steps below the second C below middle C, or C2), qualifying him as far better than a basso profundo according to your specifications. However, in the bass world many people argue that a more true definition of basso profundo is someone that can project an G1 or A1, ie sing it at fortissimo (this is because a lot of people can chest C2 with very little power and don't really deserve the title of "the lowest singers on the planet") With this new ruleset, Geoff Castellucci qualifies more as a contrabass - ie a person that can hit the notes of a basso profundo, but with less power than one.
He is still my favorite bass singer, but if you ever have the time, search out "russian oktavist singing". Their power will blow your mind.

    Lyrics sang by Geoff
Far over the Misty Mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day
To find our long forgotten gold
The pines were roaring on the height
The winds were moaning in the night
The fire was red, it flaming spread
The trees like torches blazed with light
The wind was on the withered heath
But in the forest stirred no leaf:
There shadows lay be night or day
And dark things silent crept beneath
Farewell we call to hearth and hall!
Though wind may blow and rain may fall
We must away ere break of day
Far o'er the wood and mountain tall
We must away, we must away
We ride before the break of day

so i became pretty enamored with how people could hit these notes, found out its called subharmonics. most people do it without realizing it, but its usually used to make your voice higher, not lower. its making two different notes at the same time, its honestly took very little time to learn, but you have to practice it a lot to get consistent control over it, because your voice is going to want to sound gravely most of the time the lower you go, but just like any tendon or muscle the more you work it the easier it gets. this would have freaked me out even a few months ago, but i can legitimately sing these part even lower than he goes here, and im betting he can too. theres some really concise videos here on YT enplaning how to do the technic.

Subharmonics. Basically 2 notes that, when they try and interact, combine in such a way as to cancel out certain parts of the note's frequency. This leaves an end result that has a lower frequency than either of the initial notes. Very predictable result, very cool to hear and VERY hard to do without practice.

I cant help but think "and you wanted to be baritone"... you have such strength and resonance on low notes, your ability to move between subharmonic and full throat voice is unparalleled. Avi Kaplan has beautiful range and low notes (some growl), Tim Foust has undisputedly the best growl notes I've ever heard, but your resonance with subharmonics and transitions into/out of subharmonics is unmatched... I can't find a single person, opera or otherwise, that has the control you do between full throat and subharmonics, and the sound you produce in subharmonics is so rich... just.. just wow
