  • Welcome to another big how-to video on the channel! You guys have asked me many times how I installed my 3 bank onboard boat battery charger, how is it connected to the batteries, what kind of charger should you use and what do I recommend. Today I answer all those questions and more as I give you a close up unboxing and review of the all-new ProMariner ProSportHD20Plus - a 4th generation ProMariner 20AMP 3 Bank charging system that does it ALL! Once we're done unboxing and going over the major talking points of this charger, we'll go ahead and install it on my boat, step by step and I'll explain exactly what I use for the charger installation, how I connect it to my batteries and what to consider when you go to install your very own.
    As I explain in the video, it's very important that you have a separate charging bank for each battery on your boat when installing a charging system, regardless of how your batteries are wired, such as in parallel or in a series. I go through a lot of tools and reference several previous videos in this install, so be sure to check out the following resources you may want to check out for your onboard battery charger installation:

    Great video mate, just one important point, given the heat that can be generated by these chargers the units should be mounted direct to a fibreglass or aluminium panel.
    I noticed you installed yours over your nylon carpet that is quite flammable.
    Just a geeky point but check the manufacturers install instructions as they do make reference to this very point.
    Keep up the good work
    Cheers

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You are correct that you need to be conscious of where you're installing it however I did contact the manufacturer ahead of time and showed them photos of my installation and they said because it's in a well-vented area and not enclosed it was completely fine. On my boat the only bare sections are in small compartments which presented a bigger danger because you're not supposed to put them in enclosed compartments with no ventilation.
      To your point though, it is very important that if you're not sure where to install or have any questions, don't be afraid to contact the manufacturer like I did. Thanks for the comment! 👍

    Very fine video and demonstration of your setup. Question: do you know if there is a 'parasitic' draw on the batteries, from the ProMariner battery charger when the charger is not plugged into the AC? If so do you know the amperage of the parasitic draw from the batteries? Thank you! Greg

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There should not be, all the status lights etc are all shut off and monitoring is disabled when unplugged. With that said, I am not 100% sure if there is a small draw as my boat is always plugged and I no longer run a Promariner now that I run Lithium. I would give their awesome customer service a call to be sure.

    I have an older pro Sport two bank. I run three batteries. Two series 27 in parallel and a series 24 cranking battery. I ran a longer negative wire to my second 27 series and the positive to the first one.
    It charges fine.

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can absolutely do that and get away with it no problem, the issue with doing that is the battery diagnostics the bank charger does (assuming yours does this) become useless because it can no longer load test the individual batteries. But other than that, it will definitely charge your setup :)

    Cool video!! One useful tip. The difference between waterproof and submersible night and day. When ever you can purchase a product for the bildge area I always try and look for submersible in the literature

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely! I wouldn't recommend installing these in your bilge area either way. Also they don't really say waterproof or submersible anymore, you have to look at the IP rating. For example IP68 is "deemed fit enough to withstand dust, dirt and sand, and are resistant to submersion up to a maximum depth of 1.5m underwater for up to thirty minutes.".

Can I use the 3 rd charger bank to charge both starting batteries since they both are wired through the switch? Seems like I could when the switch is on both? TIA

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chris, thank you so much for your kind words and your question! I apologize for taking so long, I could have sworn I answered this earlier but it didn't show up! So yes, you can definitely charge through the switch, but just remember the diagnostic features of the bank charger will be useless because if something is wrong, you won't know which of the 2 batteries is giving you an issue. That's why I always recommend 1 bank per battery. So if that happens, you'll need to hook up that bank to each battery one at a time until you figure out which one is the dud. Hope that helps!

  • @freedomlovingamerican3199
    @freedomlovingamerican3199 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Right on Dan. Thanks for quickly responding. I just installed the HD20Plus on my boat yesterday. Glad you know. All the manufacturers have subtle differences. I had installed an MK 330 PC (manufactured in 2020) last year. It has fried 2 new batteries (plus the original battery)=3! on bank 2 and Minn Kota REFUSES to acknowledge my warranty claim. (Per Scott at their help center). I could HEAR the new batteries boiling in both cases. BEWARE Minn Kota. They will gaslight you over the phone and tell you it is YOUR problem. So disappointed. Love your channel.

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow that's crazy! Those MK chargers are premium pricing, sounds like they were overcharging your batteries! When you overcharge and send too much amperage or voltage, the battery will start to off-gas and bubble because the excessive power is breaking down the electrolyte in each of the cells. And as you saw, if you don't catch it and figure out what the issue is, it will eventually kill the battery. Sorry you're dealing with that, that sucks :( I'd keep pressuring them to be honest...
      My CS experience with MK isn't great either. They refused to admit the interference issues on my TM are directly due to an issue with the design of the motor and not due to an external factor. Even the authorized repair center for MK told me this is a design flaw in that model. One of the reasons why I decided to stick to Garmin equipment and not go with HB's MEGA platform. I'll also be moving to the Garmin Force TM soon.

    great video - i have been doing he multiple mini chargers for years, and wondering if its harming my batteries not being charged properly or well enough. was looking at this one and the minn kota's and i think i like this one better due to status lights and such, both almost the same technology wise. thanks for sharing, and pointing out the pros, just have to measure and see if it will fit in my compartment or figure where to put. good stuff.

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the multiple charger thing is brutal! Just bear in mind if you do move up to a bank charger, it needs to get decent ventilation due to the heat they generate when in use. If you put it in a compartment, make sure you leave the compartment open when charging! Allowing these to overheat too much can shorten their lifespan. Good luck with your install and thanks for the comment!

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh great question and yes you can, absolutely just use the positive and negative terminals of the same battery. But word of warning just in case you are thinking of connecting any chartplotters/fishfinders to one of your trolling motor batteries - if you do that, you'll likely get heavy interference on your screen every time you engage the trolling motor so not recommended. Hope that helps!

When I shoot video, I also have a round light I shine off to the side to light my shooting area a bit. I can't point it straight at me or else you're just going to see the reflections in my glasses 😂 we moved here last year and we had such a hard time because I refused to buy any house that didn't have a double garage that was at least 25 ft deep for my boat hehe

So for example in my installation, I created an extension for the bank that goes to the main battery in the back. @DanRichardFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tony, yes this would absolutely work! So if you have 1 main battery and you want a backup second battery, you need to buy the 2 bank version of this charger. You will have 2 sets of wires, 1 for each battery and you can also have the inverter hooked up. You'll need to wire a battery switch that allows you to select which battery is powering your boat (or RV etc) so you can easily switch from the main battery to the backup. Hope that helps!

    I'm looking to install one on my boat and your video is very helpful. What if I bought a 3 bank charger, but only used 2 until I decided to add another battery, or decided not too, what would you suggest to do with the extra bank wires? Or would that be dangerous to have the extra bank wires unused?

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The charger will always detect if there is a battery connected to each bank and will not send a charge if there is no battery detected. You should be able to just wire up 2 of the 3 banks and just wrap the extra cable up you're not using and protect the terminals at the end with some electrical tape until you need them. Now just a word of warning - I saw someone mention that on the ProMariner charger they had, it would not charge ANY battery if 1 of the banks was not connected to a battery. TBH I feel like that doesn't make sense so if you plan on buying this brand, I suggest you call up ProMariner or send them an email (they have fantastic support) and ask them if not connecting a bank affects the charging of the other 2 at all. Hope that helps!

    Good video's. I am wondering if there is a guideline on how long batteries last in years. For example I just bought a used boat with 2 batteries. Looks like they have 5 summer seasons on them. They start the boat just fine and I just winterized the boat, pulled the batteries and brought them inside and put them on a charger. They are Excide marine batteries with 1000 CCA. Boat has a single 5.7 gas v8. would it be wise to use these next season?

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! 5 to 6 years is about the maximum you can expect from batteries that are not heavily used. Sounds like you may want to start looking in to changing them. You could keep going until you see they're not holding power as well as before but it's nice to have the peace of mind you won't have problems on the water. Hope that helps!

    Couple of questions. I’ve been considering this model and comparing it with the Noco brand. It doesn’t appear that the ProSport has temperature compensation to adjust for ambient temp and charging current, correct? Also, how do you select the battery types? I have agm trolling batteries and flooded acid for the starting? It appears this just changes the settings as a whole? Thanks!

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great questions you definitely should be asking when looking at a charger! I don't know about "compensation" per say but it does have built-in over-voltage, overload, over-temperature, reverse polarity and ignition protection so it will cut off charging to avoid damaging batteries on the charger in those cases. For more specific information, I would give them a call and just ask, I found their customer service to be very responsive.
      For the battery type, this gen 3 model is totally auto-detect, so you don't have to set anything in terms of the battery type. But do be aware, these models are not suitable for LiFePO4 (Lithium) batteries.

    Great videos !! I am planning on purchasing a 24v 100A Lithium battery for my Terrova 80 .. Would you have any suggestions for onboard 24v lithium chargers ?

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately I know very little about 24 or 36 volt standalone batteries and have done very little research about them for a couple of reasons. 1. They are very expensive and would prefer to have 2 12v batteries. If one dies, I can replace it and don't have to buy a whole new single 24v battery. 2. I need to better research this, but as far as I can tell if I have a single 24v battery for the trolling motor and then a 12v main battery, this means I would need 2 chargers installed in my boat - a 24v one and a 12v one, which kind of sucks.
      Now if you are NOT looking for an onboard marine charger, there are a lot of 24v lithium chargers out there, ranging from $150 to 4x that. The issue is if you're looking for a marine charger, you need to find one that has an IPX rating so it's water resistant and I honestly don't see too many available. Noco has a heavy duty 24v charger that is IP66 rated (water proof) and you can check that out at amzn.to/3Jksdwa but it's pretty pricey! My advice would be call up the battery manufacturer you're going with and ask them what they recommend and then look up reviews online of whatever charger they're telling you to go with. Again, the big difference is do you want an onboard charger or something that you connect/disconnect each time you need to charge the battery. Hope that helps!

    How can you use a 24 volt system on a 12 volt trolling motor or fish finder?

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should not use a 24 volt setup on equipment rated for 12 volts but if that's the setup you have, you can use what's called a 24v to 12v step down converter like this: amzn.to/3vaTY41
      It's important that you get one for the amperage you're drawing, so if you plan on using this on a trolling motor, you'll need a 40 amp one like the one I linked to above. There are cheaper ones but they are usually rated to 10 amps and a 30 pound thrust trolling motor has a max draw of around 30 amps. Also remember you should always avoid wiring your fish finder to the same battery as a trolling motor or you risk serious interference on the screen when your trolling motor is on. Hope that helps!

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi JJ, I actually talk about that right round the 1:50 mark of the video - you should always have 1 bank per battery no matter if you have your batteries wired in a series or parallel. This is because these intelligent bank chargers actually run diagnostics on your batteries so if you get any kind of error and you have 1 bank wired to two batteries in parallel, you will have no clue which one has the issue. Or worse yet, you could have 1 battery in your parallel setup that is toast and one that is fine and the charger doesn't detect it until you realize you only have have the charge capacity and you lose power out on the water. So you need 1 bank per battery and neg to neg and pos to pos on each one :) Hope that helps but of course feel free to ask me any questions :) Good luck with your project!

      You can absolutely set something like this up. I would recommend a 100 watt panel or higher. Check out something like this: amzn.to/3qSOCZo or amzn.to/3F2Kifd but bear in mind this is not multiple banks. Charger bank 3 needs to be wired to your engine/starter/house battery. 1 and 2 are for your 24 volt, non engine, deep cycle trolling motor bank. If you watch your video, the silver tag on bank 3 wire instructs you to connect to engine bank. Tossing the instructions over your shoulder is never a good idea. Come-on MAN!

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol I'll have to rewatch the video I didn't notice it. When you're filming and trying to do work, it's tough and when you reshoot things several times you may not notice it. Like for example you'll film something in one shot and it was good, you review the video and it was blurry. ARG! So you redo it a few times and this was filmed when I just got my new camera so I was having a hell of a time with it. I do remember taking note of the main starter wire when I installed it and I just checked because I'm sure it's wired fine and I do have it on the main battery at the back.
      Definitely don't need the instructions anymore, I've wired a bunch of these now, 2 on my boat and a few for other fishing friends. I always try to be careful when shooting how-tos but it's tough juggling the job at hand + shooting good shots. In all honesty, either you're the most patient person in the world or you don't fish that much... This saves you a ton of time when you get home or when you go to leave for fishing and it's 1,000% worth it. There isn't even such a thing as a professionally rigged boat that does not have a bank charger built into it. To each his own but this is absolutely worth drilling three holes and a few screws. I've never in my life heard of someone regretting installing a bank charger on their boat. You also must not travel with your boat too much either because then you would be leaving your compartments unlocked and open to run all of your charging wires and clamps instead of locking them up when you're not around your boat.

      Well most boats these days have conduit running to all the battery compartments so hole drilling is getting to be less and less of an issue. For my install of this newer one, I got it for an amazing prize and I had so many people asking me to do a video about a charger install that I figured I would go ahead and do it. I re-used the larger holes for the cable and 2 of the screw holes so I really didn't add much more to the cheese ;) I do however have to upgrade again as I am going all lithium this year... yikes!

      Actually the concern in that case would be the 515 receptacle in which case if it's in your garage you probably shouldn't have to worry about it being waterproof or if it's dockside or otherwise it would be GFI protected so again not a concern. The waterproof feature, or as you want to be anal about it, water resistant feature is that the unit can be completely submerged without damaging it, which is obviously the primary concern when it comes to an onboard bank charger.
      Also this video is pretty old and even just a couple of years ago it was not prevalent to have lithium batteries and there's still millions of boats that don't, so this product is still relevant.
