    I know nothing about batteries or marine electronics and I am in the process of upgrading my fish finders. During this process, I am running clean 10g wire to each. I wasn’t sure which battery to hook the wire to. I searched for days on TH-cam with no luck finding help, now I know - Cranking Battery! I was so close to messing this up! Thank you for the great explanation of how batteries function… 👌🏻

    Two years later this motor is going strong th-cam.com/users/postUgkxBZWgzfpS2Jj7JqIHyaSZjyVHNUgCKCBf Just uploaded a video of it after 2 years. We use it probably a dozen days each year on our small raft.-original review- We got this motor the other day and tested it out. I don't have anything to compare it to, but it seems good to me. It has all the features advertised - the motor housing is metal. We will see how it performs longer term and I will revise this review if needed. Some initial observations:- Good thrust, moves our boat around really well- It comes with a circuit breaker but no switch - so there's no way to kill the motor other than yanking the connection off the battery. I installed an inline switch.- The mount bracket is plastic and I worry it might break- There are a number of plastic parts that I worry about, but the most important ones are metal or some kind of composite

    The more reserve capacity the battery has the better it will perform. The Everstart H8 AGM battery is a great performer.

    Thank you for the helpful video. Is it necessary to disconnect the trolling motor prior to plugging in the charger. If so, disconnect only the positive (+) wire or both wires to the trolling motor? Similarly, instead disconnecting the wire is, it appropriate to open the circuit breaker? Thanks again.

      Hi John,
      We recommend disconnecting power from the battery while charging.

    Thanks for the video, although i am 90% sure after seeing this video, i would like you to confirm. I have 3 batteries in series for my 36v minn kota trolling motor. I also have just bought the minn Kota MK 330D On-board Charger. The question is, can i just simply connect each bank to the battery permanently without the hassle of connecting / disconnection any wires that lead to my trolling motor or bridges between the batteries? I hope i have been clear in my question.

    • @MinnKotaTutorials
      @MinnKotaTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Evan,
      Yes, you can put each bank to a battery and leave the jumper wires in place. The Battery Charger will see each battery as individual. You will just have to come home and plug the Battery Charger in.
      Thanks!

    My boat currently has 2 batteries (1 for accessiories, 1 for motor) I am planning on adding a 36v trolling motor soon. That would then be 5 batteries how would that get wired in? Or would I have to get a separate charger for each? Is the max I can use 4 batteries? Thanks in advance for your time and great video

      Mando,
      We recommend you have a designated bank from the Battery Charger to each battery. You would have to do a 3 Bank charger along with a 2 Bank Charger.
      Thanks!

    Hello sir, can I ask you question please, I have boat has single inboard engine mercruiser 5.0, and I have two battery bank for the engine need to replace with new one, I wonder can I mix two type of batter one flooded acid as jump starting 90Ah and the second is AGM deep cycle 100Ah, is that safe if they connected with my engine to charging and support power for the boat?

      Hi Ameen,
      This does not appear to be a question regarding any specific Minn Kota product and appears more related to general boat wiring and batteries. As such we would contact a dealership that rigs similar boats to better answer this question.
      Thanks!

    Thank you for the very informative video. I would just like to confirm what you mentioned between minute 13:30-13:49..."...that the starting battery is recommended to power all the onboard electronics...the other 3 batteries should be independent of starting battery and solely used for trolling motor..." Are you stating that the starting battery power sonar, navigation lights, etc? and that the 3 trolling motor batteries solely be used for up to 72volt trolling motor? I just want to confirm.

    • @rguil15
      @rguil15 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's exactly what he's saying. For 1, if you run 2+ batteries in series, and try to hook up your 12V accessories to that circuit, you'll fry them as you'll have 24+ volts going to them.

    • @lancehenthorn17
      @lancehenthorn17 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If need be you can connect to the low side battery and solely the low side battery for running your electronics. It is not recommended to connect to middle or high side battery. You could damage the batteries. At least that's what I have always learned.
      Now with all that said never connect your electronics to more than one battery. Unless they are connected in parallel. Remember two batteries connected in series will produce 24V and three 36V.

    One thing not mentioned here is that a discharged battery will always fail a load test. ALWAYS test a fully charged bettery or you will end up buying a lot of betteries.

    I have mk440 charger connected to 2 batteries. I have 2 separate batteries in a different compartment for my trolling motor with no charger. Would you recommend hooking up the other 2 batteries to the mk440 or hook up a separate charger for my trolling batteries?

    • @MinnKotaTutorials
      @MinnKotaTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mario, the MK 440 is a 4-bank charger, therefore, if the cables are able to reach into your separate compartment, it could be hooked up to your two trolling motor batteries. Just ensure that the banks are set up to the appropriate style of battery (lead-acid, AGM, etc.).

    • @MinnKotaTutorials
      @MinnKotaTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mario,
      You can utilize all four charger banks. Just make certain the battery type is correctly set for each bank of the charger being used.
      Thank you

    If your deep cycle battery goes completely dead, are they ruined and no longer any good? Or can you just recharge them?

      We do not deal in batteries here so we would recommend you contact your battery manufacturer. We would not say the battery is ruined but it will never be the same.

    PS
    My 2 trolling battery’s are connected to each other
    But it looks like my start battery must be working off 1 of the trolling battery’s as there isn’t any direct connection to my charger
    My marine charger has 1 set of wires going to one trolling battery and another set of wires out of my 2nd trolling battery??
    Advice piece

    • @MinnKotaTutorials
      @MinnKotaTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Vinnie,
      First covering how the batteries are connected; your trolling motor battery(s) should not be connected to the starting battery in the manner described. In fact, trolling batteries and starting batteries should not be connected to each other at all. We suspect whoever set this up tried to get away with using just a two bank charger and is trying to use the engine alternator to charge the other trolling battery by connecting it parallel to the starting battery. This is not a good idea and can cause a variety of issues. Again your trolling batteries and staring battery should not be connected to each other at all. In order to charge all three batteries, you should have a three bank charger.
      Thanks!

    • @harrishawker1
      @harrishawker1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the reply
      And now I got to figure out how to separate the starter battery from the trolling. I’m gonna order a 3 bank today. Also this is for a champion bass boat with a mercury 150
      Since I’m getting a 3 bank charger do I connect 1 bank to the starter battery or does my mercury efi have its own alternator?

    • @MinnKotaTutorials
      @MinnKotaTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We can't say what the outboard has for an alternator. As a general rule, you want as many charging banks as you have batteries on the boat.
      Thanks!

    What about Lithium batteries? Can I use a 36 V Lithium battery to replace the 3 std batteries

    • @MinnKotaTutorials
      @MinnKotaTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lithium batteries can be used but be aware they operate at a higher voltage than the nominal 36V, for a longer period of time. The higher, sustained voltage can cause more heat to build up in the lower unit as compared to a flooded lead acid battery. More heat and voltage can lead to faster wear on the brushes and caused the brush plate holder to melt over time. Flooded lead acid batteries are more forgiving on the motor as they slowly drop voltage as the battery discharges, allowing the heat to dissipate.
