    Legendary painter Richard Grey: 'You can only go so far painting box art style, commission painting is boring and I really don't like painting space marines'
    James and George: *slightly nervous laughter*

    Petition to do the feedback segment again but it’s me instead of Rich, and I will judge entirely on vibes rather than quality

    Richard is the absolute GOAT in my eyes. There's plenty of amazing painters out there, but none have the ability to teach like Rich does. Great interview

    Always great hearing Rich talk about the hobby, so down to earth about it and demystifying the magic!

    Good ol Rich! I find this interview affirming, actually, because I enjoy batch painting. It just goes to show that we all enjoy the hobby in our own way. I’d love to be able to paint to a very high standard like him one day, but I keep in mind that he does it because he loves it, not because it’s what miniature painters are “supposed” to do. He and army painters like Peachy are all validly artists.

    It's great to see such a spectrum of painters, collectors, modellers and hobbyists, it gives a lot more insight into all aspects of the hobby and kind of normalises all the different ways in which we all interact with miniatures in our own unique ways and derive enjoyment from it in such a personal way.

    49:50 summed up my whole r/miniaturepainting experience. everyone is asking for cc, but all hell breaks loose once you actually critique something

    In my mind Richard Grey is the GOAT. If I could magically paint (and clearly have the patience and persistence of) anyone it would be him. His freehands are simply superb artistry. Thank you guys so much for putting your own pieces in his hands for public critique. That took some stones but, as a viewer, I learned a lot listening to his commentary. A million thanks guys!!!

    Fully agree with constructive criticism. I would rather someone said 'your model is crap because........ Rather than someone saying wow thats amazing when it isn't. I paint for me and i treat my instagram like a portfolio. If people like my work, thats great if they don't they don't i'm not bothered.

    Love Richard Gray's work, but I do open his email Patreon updates and say jokingly to friends in the hobby 'oooo F*** Off there's no way that's not photoshopped!' 😂
    Richards one of the few high level painter who actively encourages painters to try new/more difficult techniques and should be applauded for it, I learnt so much from his Grimdark series (not just about doing Grimdark either) and the little bits of knowledge he drops in his videos (that are free on his youtube) is astounding.
    His specific palette shots are good as he uses these to reference the consistency of paints.

    My headset is from H&S UK (?) it doesn't have a bridge, it has the headband that goes around the head as normal but it also has an adjustable strap that goes from side to side. I got it ages ago and I haven't seen a similar one since, as Richard says they are mostly those annoying "glasses" type

    Great content. Question: as a relatively new painter, I’m interested to try NMM. Any recommendations for a suitable model to try?

    • @djtuskan
      @djtuskan หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      you are probably better off trying a part of a model to start with and build your confidence and refine your palette etc, but the model that springs to mind is the new dante... loads of nice big areas to work on with interesting shapes and already some mind blowing examples up there to reference, flameon miniatures' dante is insane!

    • @darrannorman6185
      @darrannorman6185 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @djtuskan thanks. Yes seen that Dante, insane! At least with Dante I can experiment on each area and practice/learn as I go...

    36:00 Your highly developed painting fundamentals still be apparent when the paint job is made more succinct for a strictly gaming army. It will still be in contention for best painted at events. And it isn't as if you'd be pulling a model from that army to enter into GD. Nor is it hurting your development by focusing mostly on fundamentals and efficiencies.
    Get a few games under your belt and learn how fun that aspect of the hobby is. Then it will be easier to shift priorities in the paint process to allow more room/time for table top fun. Nothing motivates painting models quite like the urge to get them into a game and watch them get obliterated.

    Sadly, this has been the only episode of the podcast so far I haven't enjoyed. None of the usual fun and friendly feel of the usual episodes. I'm sure this guest is an amazing painter, but he just comes across as "above" everyone else, and it's not fun 😢
