Confused on vallejo primer - have used it through both airbrush, and in extreme case, brush on - and had zero issues. I usually let any primer cure, or aersol degas, for a day. Edit - on plastic

The regular Vallejo regular primer is dogcrap through an airbrush. The MECHA primer though is the absolute best. It airbrushes much better, and is more durable.

Id like to point out the fact that vallejo are an extremely rare example of truly environmentally responsible, global company. They’re the only major paint/art supply companies that refuse to use toxic petrochemicals in their products (hence the slightly different primer formulation/behaviour - I actually prefer vallejo primer over any other I’ve tried personally).
Not only that but their products are amazing in terms of performance and consistency. Easily the best paint company out there imo.

I'm quite glad to hear people using airbrush paints as pre-thinned brush paints - my local Travelling Man was selling off all their citadel air paints for like 50p each so I bought a massive bag of them and was quite pleased using a few of them straight out of the pot.

Valleojo colour names ARE useful IF you come from a Historical's painting background many of (if not all) use the names given by the historical organisation or the actual historic generic name for the color (remember uniforms of the 1800's were very colorful and each of those colours really used a actual colour name for the colour like "Prussian blue" "sea green" "dark red" and so on ) Then also naming of colours from WWI and WWII etc for more colour variations forming for naval and air sources (which is where Pale blue grey and Blue grey pale etc came from).

You make a great point for the model colour range, but the new GameColor range is aimed at fantasy users like us in 40k and those names aren't used in the same way.

On the mini fridge, its actually a trick of the trade. Im a Cabinetmaker and have done a fair bit of spray painting in my time and have allways kept pre mixed lacquers in the fridge overnight to keep from curing, only way to store 2 pac lacquers after being mixed. A mini fridge in my hobby room makes perfectly good sense - I need one.

46:44 I think something important to note with the flow improver chat is that Flow Improver, and AIRBRUSH Flow Improver, are two different things with different chemical makeups and properties. While you can use Airbrush Flow Improver with a brush just fine, you should not use the the flow improver made for regular brushes through an airbrush as it actually makes the paint stick together and not atomise properly, which is counter to how an airbrush works. This is another one of those unfortunate naming conventions in this hobby where much like the Pale Blue/Grey vs. Pale Grey/Blue; Flow Improver and Airbrush Flow Improver just aren't the same thing.

heard this mentioned somewhere, but I'm less sure that GW's paint names are there due to trademarking.
I think its much more so that a customer looking up how to paint up their space marines ends up googling terms that will only bring up GW paints, instead of introducing them to the dozen other brands that are out there competing

In regards to which potato would be best, I am uniquely qualified to answer this question... as an Atlantic Canadian, who's worked predominantly in pubs, I both remember painting with potatoes in school, and have worked with hundreds of pounds of taters. I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that Russet potatos make the best best painting medium/wet palette/dunking bucket. They're starchy and dense, and they tend to stay firm longer than other potatoes. We need to see that potato competition video now!

I used to make model planes and the serial number thing makes perfect sense so you get the exact historically accurate base colour. I've recently started using AK intense colours and i think I'll stick with them for a while for minis, they've got the right balance of properties for mini paint

There's two types of free minis at the GW store.
One is the painting demo model. You can choose between a stormcast or a space marine. You get to keep it when you're done.
The other is the mini of the month. Each store has a limited supply and you just ask for one when you go in. They are usually a single model from a recent release, so they make for great conversions or test models. For example, I turned the deathwing knight into a chapter-agnostic terminator ancient. I also used the free cryptguard mini to make a crypt ghast courtier without having to sacrifice one of my crypt ghouls.

Rumor was that Game Color was meant to be supplied to GW in the early 1990s when they refreshed their paint range. For whatever reason, that partnership didn't happen, but they had almost a complete compatible set out on the market very quickly.

Just listened on Spotify, congrats on episode 50!
I started listening in October time last year and I'm finally caught up! I started really getting into Vallejo paints around a year or two ago, but when I first got an airbrush I bought a bottle of black surface primer and I think it's great, it's the only air paint I use regularly and I still have that same bottle, about 4 years on.
Love the podcast and appreciate all the little tips you put out, I've learned a couple things and I can't wait to take part in the monthly painting challenge now I'm caught up. However, is the full run down posted anywhere permanently so I don't have to go back through the episodes and find the full rundown if I ever want to know what next month's is?

FYI the GameColor range, has more vibrant and varying tones designed specifically for fantasy painting. If your a 40k player wanting colourful brighter paints, then Game Color is for you!
The ModelColor is for more traditional model painting but can equally be used for 40k, if your prefer a more muted colour tone. Also note that the new ModelColor range is comming out soon, so its worth waiting to see the reviews on those.

As I listen to this I’m painting a base for Mortarion that I made out of Epic Basing bits, milliput and Vallejo texture paste; and the only problem I’ve ever had with Vallejo primer is letting it sit too long and it becoming quite chunky, as a primer though I think it’s excellent, and doesn’t scrape off easily. AK primer, on the other hand, I was able to remove by gently brushing with my fingertips, it looked like I’d sanded it.

The free mini of the month policies change by location. Some places want you to assemble there, so you don't sell the sprue. Others want you to even try to paint there. And yet there are stores that just lay them on the counter and you can take it and go. Just like there's GW stores where there is no playing, and others where the same people are using the tables at all times.

It's better for covering large surface areas with fat dry brushes. For example a knight skeleton, or parts of a tank. I can do it well enough on a plasticard sheet to where I can air brush half of it, and makeup-dry brush the other half and not be able to tell which side was what.
Don't use it for detail work it is way too runny for that.
Don't put it on a wet pallet. Only put out a little at a time on a regular pallet, as you need it.

Remember that most of what you see online are people who do this professionally, and this hobby is most of what they do with their free time with yeeeeaaaaars of experience behind them. Don't be so hard on yourself keep it up!

It takes time, and practice, but you do get better. Seriously just start by getting it neat and the rest will follow. You will get there. 😁

Do slapchop, pretty much instant results, takes a lot of the pain out of it

If you like the slapchop look, that's an easy way to get decent results. It is a very distinct look to anyone with a bit of painting experience and not to everyone's taste, but depending on why you're painting, it's a great way to get stuff on the tabletop looking decent.
Otherwise, patience and practice goes a long way. As the Seige boys often point out, this hobby has become obsessed with speed, and I know people who will paint a squad of 5 models in an evening or two and then feel down that it doesn't look as good as a single model that took anywhere from dozens to 100+ hours to paint.
When it comes to improving, there's certain basics which will usually improve passively with just repetition and painting normally, but that has a certain ceiling to it where you won't improve much further without the intent of actually trying to improve. If you want to learn more advanced techniques then you often need to put the intent behind actually learning and practicing those techniques and being ok with messing up. And again, patience is massive. For example, if you want super smooth glazes, there's no real shortcut, it just takes ages.

No you just go in the store and grab a model for free its in a box at the front counter and you walk out. I bring a couple mates and get more then one.
