    for my ultramarines ive been:
    - slapping on Ultramarines blue contrast paint,
    - dry brushing macragge blue on all the visible flat panels
    - roughly dry brushing highlights with altdorf guard blue
    - edge highlighting with calgar blue

I'm in a similar position to Paul I think. Started up 4 months ago after an almost 30 year break. All of the tutorials available on YT and elsewhere, plus better paints, has got me painting much better than I ever did when I was a kid. Such a good hobby to get back into (other than making me even more sedentary!), really relaxing, I'm just ploughing through audiobooks and painting up Kill Teams :)

The spear with a bomb at the end is just another Predator reference in the Kroot. Arnie threw a spear with explosive tips made from grenades at the Predator, who the Kroot are definitely inspired by. 🤘🏻

I don’t know if you remember or not but the imperial guard used to have that exact same spear on their cavalry. Their cavalry has been a thing for quite a while but it’s nice not to previous models.

Metal Mordians and the 1994 Metal tank crews were near perfect models that still hold up and are the absolute perfect scale for the entire game (probably something to do with the Perry Twins who were huge in the concept and sculpting of those ranges)

re varnishing - mainly as I am lazy, but some times I'll just varnish the protruding areas, or the areas it's most likely to be handled, rather than doing the whole thing. Anywhere it's likely to get contact with something else is where I'll just brush some on.

Really enjoyed this chat. I think it shows the depth in squad you have at the studio to sub in such a great extra face. I had a spookily similar hobby origin to Paul so it felt like a very warm familiar chat. Thanks for that.
Superb tips and the chat about focussed deliberate improvement is really valid. There's a lot of advice out there of "just put the hours in, paint as much as you can" which is useful but won't develop you as a painter if you don't have a muse or a mentor imho. Finding that painter or style you like is super important then down the line you can add in your own touches to make the style your own.

watching the section about contrast paints, I wanted to ask whether it is bad or frowned upon to use them? I'm starting my very first army (blood angels) and much prefer baal red contrast over white primer than mephiston red.

After listening about varnish application in multiple episodes, I did get some AK Ultra Matt Varnish myself. I must say that I find that the vallejo matt varnish is actually matter (if that's a word). Transfers just blend so much better with the vallejo one.

Varnish is more like a save point than a final step. Often it changes the miniatures significantly, colors can be less vibrant, or more translucent. Most of times i need to rework a bit after the varnish. I understand most people have only one brand of varnish, and it's really usefull to own several with different properties as you said. If you don't, then i suggest you at least get three types of medium : ultra mat, satine, glossy. To make the adjustements before varnishing.

Question for the team: Ive recently inherited a Warhammer Dwarfs Battalion box! which I can't wait to restore. Some are painted, some still on sprue. So, what process would you take to strip and paint, making sure I don't loose the details or damage them, and of course, base rim, Im very much team black, but what's the teams thoughts for this vintage?

I think with the Raven Guard, along with Salamanders, Iron Hands and to a slightly lesser degree Fists and White Scars, if they got the love from GW that the Angels, Wolves and Ultramarines get, and have got for the last thirty years, they would be way higher in the ranking. Aesthetically they look cool, they have some really good background lore (though again a bit undersold by GW both on the rules and writing front) and the recent new lore for Corax (on the hunt for Lorgar and being a loyalist almost-possible-maybe daemon primarch) is pretty damn awesome - can you imagine how cool his primarch model will potentially be if they ever get round to making him? A literal demi-god of shadows and crows?
Unfortunately, as a force they have an emo image cliche which GW has lamentably fed into, I think partly due to lazy thinking about the chapter and a lack of will to do anything with them. While I do actually like the look of Shrike, I WISH they had given the option to have him helmeted. Also, the heads supplied in the RG upgrade kits are laughably bad and the fact you only get two beaky helmets per kit (and FOUR of the stupid emo faces? What?) is sooooo dumb.
I'm collecting a heresy Raven Guard army and while they don't have many unique units - or ANY unique characters, ffs - that does allow for some real freedom bashing together a custom force, both using new Mk6 troops and bits from the old 40k space marine range which has loads of Mk6 elements. I've kitbashed a ton of different units and characters and it's been a greatly liberating experience for me. Oh, and Dark Furies are objectively the best looking jump pack troops ever! I won't hear any argument!

On brushes. Aren't the artis opus brushes just rebranded rosemary & co?

    • @SiegeStudios
      @SiegeStudios  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

No I can factually say they are not as I founded Artis Opus and was and one of the owners. I spent nearly 3 months designing both series S and series M each respectively from handle weight to head length and fill of hair and more. R&C manufacture them as there are only a few brush makers with the skill and decades of experience we needed to create the range with us. I sold my share of the company 2 years ago and am no longer involved but suffice to say anyone claiming they are simply rebranded is making a totally false statement and has no knowledge of what they are talking about. James / Siege Studios.

@@koelkast9 Artis Opus is a great company that is obviously run by people who care about the hobby. I love them, I have all of their brush sets and a couple of their dry palettes. I also own a lot of W&N and R&C kolinsky brushes. I promise you there is no discernible difference between their brushes and the R&C. Maybe if you are a Golden Demon winning artist, you could tell the difference lmfao. But as a regular Joe, I cannot.
