I got a bone bruise by doing Italian rapier without any chest protection. It still hurts a month later. It IS possible to spar/train safely at low intensity and not get injured but you can't trust everyone to be safe unfortunately. I will NEVER forget to at least put on a gambeson next time I practice with this weapon. A chest plate might be necessary if you're opponent is reckless with your safety. If I were you guys, I wouldn't take the risk. My ribs still hurt. Just a suggestion.
I appreciate the concern : D we do have full protective gear available. Using chest protectors and gambesons are optional in our club for sparring though we do try to keep things light when going lightly armored.
