Definitely don't use the extremerate screwdrivers. They will strip your screws. Found out the screwdriver tip they sent me was already chipped when it stripped the only screw I tried to remove.
I had the same experience. I ended up having to buy a screw extractor kit to get the stripped screw out of the joy con rail. I highly recommend anyone who likes to do this sort of thing to go buy one of those iFixit kits.
Followed this video step by step, I used my own screwdrivers and they worked excellently. Luckily I was paying enough attention, that I transferred the kickstand piece. It's great. Now onto the joycons!
I didnt realize the body was way easier replacing the shells and I did the joycons first. Pretty hard for a first timer but it was a success anyway. I thought the body was going to be harder. Thank God it isn’t. 🙂
Back again to watch a tut for the backplate. thanks again for these. Now I have a cosmic themed switch thats super fun. Those back y screws are awful. I ended up having to snip and pry off some of the plastic from the old backplate for the last corner because the screw stripped so bad
well boys I did it and broke a joycon trigger. easy fix if I could find that piece lol thankfully had another joycon to take apart and used that one. not as hard as it looks but it's so TINY!

My idiotic nephew dropped my Switch when I told him not to touch it or play on it since I was in the middle of a boss fight ( botw ). He touched my Switch anyway and now the back is all scratched up because it slide over the ground. I am planning on getting a new backplate so thank you for this!!!
Just got me Atomic Purple backplate! Comin in on Wednesday! Since I didn't fancy Monster Hunter Rise that came with the special edition Switch, I'm taking off the backplate. I like the Joycons though! Will be watching this tutorial, you did great explaining the process thoroughly!
I am curious, did you get your kickstand to eventually stay in place? I noticed your kickstand kept falling. If the backing is changed out, will the kickstand continue to fall out? or is yours just broken and it should be fine?
Thanks :) These videos help a lot. My only problem (and a lot of other peoples problem) are those OEM screws. The middle one where the controller slides in was a B@#$H to get out. Ended up breaking the back panel which did no damage to the aesthetic of the switch but now if i pull up kinda hard on the left joy-con it just slides right out without pressing the black release button. Its not a huge deal. Doesn't seem to affect handheld game play at all. Definitely easier to take apart and put together than the controllers though.
Yeah, In my latest mod videos i started with some tips on how to remove them as i didn’t have an issue at first. Awful arent they. I replaced all mine with the ones that came with the kit.
i just got mine today! :) but the sad thing is that the Y00 screw driver kind of chipped on the top on one of the sides, so it can’t catch the screw hole at all :/ and i had a lot of trouble taking out the two phillips on the side with the included driver, i ended up only getting one out, and the other is slightly stripped, but not really, i ordered the 64 bit ifix it kit as well today before i continue this, hopefully it will help me haha because the ones on the side rail seem a little bigger? the driver would not catch them at all for me, but oh well. really nice tutorial though!!
Oh no! I hope you get it sorted. The screws in the switch don’t help as they all seem to be poor quality. Let me know if I can help in any way if you get any issues with it.
evangeline Polacek tufaga my dad actually helped me and drilled the top of the screw head out, then kinda just twisted it out manually, but i would really recommend getting the ifixit kit, or better quality screw drivers, it really helps a ton (it also happened with one of the corner screws on the back, and he did the same thing, he drilled it then we just grabbed pliers and manually turned the screw part out) hopefully you get it fixed :)

This is the best tutorial for the backplate I've ever seen, you explain it so well and simple and I tried unscrewing the last one of the four screws on the back... and It's stripped now 😭😭

The joycon shells are not very NEW looking ,I like the back but do they make joycon shells that match it as well as a front she'll piece? Of course replacing the front shell looks like a nightmare Most of the videos I see suggest saving and reusing the 3m tape that hold the digitizer to the shell Not sure if any front she'll replaces come with new tape I just picked up a second switch cheap ,had the joycons fixed by Nintendo for free (drift) It has some scratches and I was thinking of replacing the digitizer but if I am going to go through that I might as well replace the front shell as well then Only problem is that I heard It now near impossible to separate the digitizer from the LCD and put In a new digitizer with getting dust between them ,not sure I want to Sprint for a new reassembled digitizer and LCD though

The screws are giving me a headache. The joycons weren't too bad but the screws on the side are stuck in there good, and I completely stripped one of them. I tried a rubber band, a rubber glove, not sure what to do anymore. :(

Do the square foams(?) and dust filter usually come with backplate replacement kits? I dont know how to check aaa :< can i just reuse the square ones if mine didnt come with any?

The screws in the switch aren’t the best. Take it very carefully. Try and put an elastic band over it for a bit more purchase. Or use a flat blades screwdriver and dig the corner in and turn. Even if you move it slightly you can do the rest with some small pliers.
Few things to try. Firstly put an elastic band in between the screw and screwdriver. Else try a flat bladed driver and dig the corner in a n try and scrape it round. Even I you move it slightly the rest can be done with quality tweezers. HTH

I'm only planning to get a new backplate because my current is kinda loose on the top. Do I have to replace the backplate entirely, or can I just tighten the screws of it?
So my backplate didn't come with the vents or sponges, I was able to find the vents separately but not the sponges, are they a huge necessity for the back or can you recommend me someplace that sells them???

I got the kit a few days ago but when I tried to take out the screws they just got stripped and now Im kinda stuck. Is there anyway of getting the screws out with the screwdriver that comes with it? Is there a better screwdriver I can use?
Yeah, I mention this, the screws in the switch are so poor. What I did when I threaded it was get a small flat bladed screwdriver and jam the corner of it into the screw and rotate the whole thing round with any recess you can. As soon as it moves even a mm it should be easier to get out. I hope that makes sense. Good luck 👍🏻
@@Cyanjin i've read getting a wide banded rubber band, laying it over the stripped screw then pressing the screwdriver against it (using the rubber band to fill in the stripped area) and unscrewing should work
Is it true that the nintendo swithc v2 backplate screws are glued so its harder to take off is your siwthc the original or the newer switch im just scared to strip my screws D:
I’m not sure if that’s true or not! With the screws, just be careful, poke the screwdriver in hard and turn it 1/4 way round, dot try any more, then repeat til it’s relatively easy to fully unscrew.
Hey you left out a step, make sure to remove the other part of the kickstand that is on your original backplate!! If not you will have to remove the new one again if following this guide step by step. Otherwise good thanks
Theres a few techniques. TH-cam has some guides. Try putting a rubber band over it. Or use a small flat bladed screw driver and dig the corner in and turn. Even if you move it a bit, you can then use tweezers to undo it
@@CTAtechdesk yeah but you need to understand that people do a search on TH-cam for “switch backplate replacement” and your vid comes up and people watch it and then get stuck when it comes to the part with the stand which is not great when you are following the vid word for word pausing at intervals etc I had to quickly find another vid to follow which explains how to do the stand.
This video is incredibly well presented and easy to follow. My only question is how do you remove the Y screws if they've been stripped? I've unfortunately managed to damage mine and now I'm kind of at an impasse.
Thank you. OK. Don’t worry. It can be done. I’ve done it a few times. What I suggest is getting the sharpest flat screwdriver you have. Then poke one corner in, so you are in at an angle. Then force the screw round. Instead of holding the screwdriver still and turning, pull the whole screw round. As soon as it moves even a tiny bit you should be free. Let me know how you get on.
Was going great until I was doing the kickstand, it's a bit shitty they couldnt include a kickstand spring as i bought this as a kickstand replacement in the first place lol
@@CTAtechdesk No brother it's not you're fault its mine, basically my son lost his kickstand at his mothers so I sought after a replacement (approx £7 on amazon) so I figured I could buy the backplate for £13 and get the kickstand included and it did, but the metal spring/bar that clips it in place isn't, if I would of watched the tutorial first I would of known I needed the old stand to transfer the mechanism needed to keep it in place 😵. But nice tutorial it was very simple to follow and thank you I'll sub.
Ok folks do NOT use the extreme rate screws. They are garbage. Secondly because it was never mentioned I missed the part for the kickstand and got everything back on until the kickstand wouldn't stay in place. Then I found the part I didn't move over because it was ignored in the video and the extremerate screw stripped in the process of removing it.
On the outside of the switch, yes, but some have different head. Some 4 “prongs” some three. It’s only when you get inside the switch they differ in length.
Just go careful as the screws in the switch aren’t fantastic quality and can be stripped. Just take it slowly and let me know if you need any help albeit this mod is relatively easy 👍🏻

The step is in there before any screwing, I would never recommend doing this without watching it fully first, this or any mod.

I got the kit a few days ago but when I tried to take out the screws they just got stripped and now Im kinda stuck. Is there anyway of getting the screws out with the screwdriver that comes with it? Is there a better screwdriver I can use?
Yeah, I mention this, the screws in the switch are so poor. What I did when I threaded it was get a small flat bladed screwdriver and jam the corner of it into the screw and rotate the whole thing round with any recess you can. As soon as it moves even a mm it should be easier to get out. I hope that makes sense. Good luck 👍🏻

@@Cyanjin i've read getting a wide banded rubber band, laying it over the stripped screw then pressing the screwdriver against it (using the rubber band to fill in the stripped area) and unscrewing should work
does changing the back plate result to voiding warranty ? i didnt notice any stickers or anything

Yes, I believe modding/opening your switch in any way will void the warranty.
Is it true that the nintendo swithc v2 backplate screws are glued so its harder to take off is your siwthc the original or the newer switch im just scared to strip my screws D:
I’m not sure if that’s true or not! With the screws, just be careful, poke the screwdriver in hard and turn it 1/4 way round, dot try any more, then repeat til it’s relatively easy to fully unscrew.

Hey you left out a step, make sure to remove the other part of the kickstand that is on your original backplate!! If not you will have to remove the new one again if following this guide step by step. Otherwise good thanks

Theres a few techniques. TH-cam has some guides. Try putting a rubber band over it. Or use a small flat bladed screw driver and dig the corner in and turn. Even if you move it a bit, you can then use tweezers to undo it

@@CTAtechdesk yeah but you need to understand that people do a search on TH-cam for “switch backplate replacement” and your vid comes up and people watch it and then get stuck when it comes to the part with the stand which is not great when you are following the vid word for word pausing at intervals etc
I had to quickly find another vid to follow which explains how to do the stand.
This video is incredibly well presented and easy to follow. My only question is how do you remove the Y screws if they've been stripped? I've unfortunately managed to damage mine and now I'm kind of at an impasse.
Thank you. OK. Don’t worry. It can be done. I’ve done it a few times. What I suggest is getting the sharpest flat screwdriver you have. Then poke one corner in, so you are in at an angle. Then force the screw round. Instead of holding the screwdriver still and turning, pull the whole screw round. As soon as it moves even a tiny bit you should be free. Let me know how you get on.

Was going great until I was doing the kickstand, it's a bit shitty they couldnt include a kickstand spring as i bought this as a kickstand replacement in the first place lol

@@CTAtechdesk No brother it's not you're fault its mine, basically my son lost his kickstand at his mothers so I sought after a replacement (approx £7 on amazon) so I figured I could buy the backplate for £13 and get the kickstand included and it did, but the metal spring/bar that clips it in place isn't, if I would of watched the tutorial first I would of known I needed the old stand to transfer the mechanism needed to keep it in place 😵. But nice tutorial it was very simple to follow and thank you I'll sub.
The kickstand isnt reliable and the materials are less sturdy than stock switch. I wouldnt recommend this product
Ok folks do NOT use the extreme rate screws. They are garbage. Secondly because it was never mentioned I missed the part for the kickstand and got everything back on until the kickstand wouldn't stay in place. Then I found the part I didn't move over because it was ignored in the video and the extremerate screw stripped in the process of removing it.

Are all the screws the same size?
On the outside of the switch, yes, but some have different head. Some 4 “prongs” some three. It’s only when you get inside the switch they differ in length.

Just go careful as the screws in the switch aren’t fantastic quality and can be stripped. Just take it slowly and let me know if you need any help albeit this mod is relatively easy 👍🏻
