Im not a truck owner and wasnt interested in rock crawling. However, I did like the idea off light to moderate offroading and overlanding. I knew very little about portal axles before watching this video, but after watching, I have a greater understanding of how they function and what their purpose is. Listening to him explain the engineering behind the designs, and Mateo choosing great questions to ask, I was geeking out just as much as they were. Absolutely incredible, I am blown away and amazed. Well done, such a sick product and Q&A
Quinn is the man, and anything he produces is ART! Have had his portals on my Gladiator for 4 months and 7k miles and they are everything he said they'd be. 2020 Gladiator w/40" Coopers on Racelines, and it's my daily. 100% would buy again. 👍 Thanks, Quinn! 👊
I want this for my Subaru Outback! Don't need it to be a crawler, but would love the clearance for trail exploring and gear reduction to run bigger tires without taxing motor/trans.
I mean, for 20k its way out of the possibility for a normal consumer to enjoy the benefits here. We must wait for them to become more mainstream and become an assembly line product to make the mod more affordable.
I make close to $200k a year and I can’t stomach $20k in a single component. Maybe $10k but if I am going to spend the money I would rather regear the truck then add the supercharge, I would still have a little under $10k to spend on more upgrades. $20k is way over priced! ** I rather go long travel than portals it’s about $20k for long travel and you get a way more comfortable ride.
Dude this shit is really cool. Yes it is expensive but I like that everything is included to make sure you have as little issues down the road when upgrading to this stuff. Definitely interested in buying this stuff one day when I can afford it, hopefully the company and product is around that long lol!
I guess im gonna start saving. In a couple years ill have 3.88 inch and the rest of the set up. Im due for a front and rear shock upgrade and now i dont have to buy the extended travels i can go oem and save for the Toyota Tacoma 4 Gear Portal Axle Kit!
20k is a lot no matter how you look at it, but it does way more than just add clearance for tires, or clearance under the axle. Its a whole systemic improvement of the vehicle, including the potential for more wheel travel. But nothing will change that 20k is a lot...
Just heard about these portals. Question 1: Can I use my stock Lower Ball Joints or will I need after market for more strength. Question 2: their website says we need to upgrade the housing for the axle. What products do they recommend? Question 3 since it comes with new calipers, can I use the same brake pads or is there a certain size that I need to replace it with. Question4: Do they offer trimming service in the wheel wells? (Planning on getting the LC 250 or 6th gen 4R)
Is ok to run 33 maybe 35 in tiers getting up there in age changing 35 is pretty hard to do solo . From my research haven’t found any cons of system is there any that you know of feed back would really be appreciated. Note running a 22 4Runner off road with a stage 6 icon . Wish I know about portals before lift .
So in the video quinn mentioned that someone could potentially buy 2 portals for the front and then match the rear gear ratio. What would be the recommended gear ratio for the rear if I still have stock 3.73 gears? 1.22 x 3.73=4.55, I was hoping I could save the money of regearing to put towards the portals, but I couldn't find 4.55 gears for 21 tacoma. Or would I have to do the 4.30 in the front and 5.29 in the rear as you mentioned in the video?
Mateo now that you had a chance to drive long distance on the highway. What has it been like, Speeds, RPM's? As well as basic daily driving. Overall drive ability Especially with your existing 5.29's?
Hi guys, Question: Do you have portals for a Mitsubishi Pajero 2003 up? I've had a couple of them, never had a problem, went where I needed them to go, but they need more ground clearance.
Question. Say I get them on a stock gear Tacoma and later want to add a locker and different gears, what’s the option there? Can I just buy the gears needed or is it best to regear and then buy the portals?
@@tacomabeast thanks for the response. Still learning and trying to understand how portals work, also have been watching all the videos 74 weld has put out and gears are something I know nothing about so I apologize for all the questions. So you add gears to be able to run bigger tires more efficiently, Quinn said that the portals make the transmission think there’s no change basically. Thinking of them as a gear box, I get a 3.91 gear in my stock Tacoma adding the portals I now get a 4.77 gear ratio basically then correct? I think that was what Quinn was saying. I originally wanted to do a 4.88 or 5.29 but I guess in reality there’s no need if I get a 4.77 with the portals. For me it’s a daily driver and weekend toy for now.
I will never buy anything like this for my base model Tacoma with a 4 banger, but shit, that's cool. Even cooler to get some insight on how it works. I paid $1k more for the whole Tacoma than a set of portals lol
So with the portals lift would you recommend going as little lift as possible from the springs? I would still prefer to pair with the jd long travel setup but would think 4" wide travel kit would become unnecessary as well and go with shorter width.
portal oil.. why not use trans fluid.. synthetic is garbage. engine oil needs changing every 4k ish.. not changing oil in portals that often...@@tacomabeast
The rear would still need to be re-geared. I think it’s worth it if you have a built LT rear on floating axles with disc brakes. If you have LT up front, I think it’s worth it to have portals in the back if you don’t have it built there. Speaking from experience, my issue has been my diff getting hung up in the rear.
What’s up Tacoma Beast I was wondering if u could make a build based on the 2nd gen 2.7L Manual Transmission acess cab preferably (2007 Tacoma) and I was very curious because I have one myself and I was trying to find new ideas to make my truck nice and fast so thank you and have a good day TACOMA CENTRALLLL BABBYYY

If they ever made a four-wheel independent suspension Wrangler it wouldn't be the end of the world because a company like 74 weld would probably put out portals pretty quickly.
This would work with a 4cyl, not sure what the stats would be for the 4Runner or if 74weld is developing one for that model but you can reach out to them on IG with questions 🤙
Dirtking makes great stuff but this is just a different way to lift. Better ride, disc conversion for the rear, regear, full float conversion with 4340 shafts, bigger rotors and brakes front and rear. At the end of the day a LT to a portal is apples to oranges. We sell ride quality and ground clearance. The other guys sell you a lift.

Absolutely amazed in the amount of engineering and hardware with these portals. Worth every penny imo. Reasonably priced for what you get.
We need that Build video... I'm waiting on my portals in the mail. They should be here tomorrow. Im stoked.
Very high on my list for the next evolution of the Pirate Ship
Excellent Video!!! Thanks Quinn for the talk, always glad to listen to you geeking out on gears.
I want this for my Subaru Outback! Don't need it to be a crawler, but would love the clearance for trail exploring and gear reduction to run bigger tires without taxing motor/trans.
Well informed video, Mateo. I hit rewind so many times 😂 a lot of the stuff was flying over my head at first.

Adding that kind of money on an already bad investment is insane
It’s really just a matter of where your priorities are. You have to remember, you can’t drive a house, but you can sleep in a car!!😂
You can build your vehicle with gears, lockers, and most other things you want, as well as buy tires and still have money left over for a burger 🍔

We’ve been making portals since 2011. We plan to expand this line to lots of other applications in the future. We will be here when you are ready
@@74weld since you did the Bronco, would you guys do kits for the Ranger(2019-2023)?
I've been waiting for this for year's. I volunteer my 06 Total Chaos Long travel access cab for this project.

portals give you more height,, not more travel..less travel.. for the price,,, not worth it.. you can buy a whole unimog. for 15k..
I would love to put these on my truck but $20k is allot to put into clearance height.

with the larger brakes that come with the unit, as well as clearing the portals themselves, what size diameter wheels would be required?
17” inch wheels
This product is brilliant. Tq
What about the 3rd gen 4Runner?
to do just the front portal and regear the rear... sounds like a reasonable recipe for those that can't stomach the full $20k price tag
What about 4Runners?

What about the added weight of the portals at the wheels?
we add roughly 30lbs a corner.

Mpg stayed the same with the bigger tires so that was pretty good, driving feels crazy being so high off the ground 😂
You going to stay with the 5.29's gears (Final drive 6.45) or drop to 4.88 gears ( Final drive 5.95)?@@tacomabeast
Hi guys, Question: Do you have portals for a Mitsubishi Pajero 2003 up? I've had a couple of them, never had a problem, went where I needed them to go, but they need more ground clearance.

Yes

how do they hold up in cold climates (snow)?
Are there plans to make a portal for the tundra?

Question. Say I get them on a stock gear Tacoma and later want to add a locker and different gears, what’s the option there? Can I just buy the gears needed or is it best to regear and then buy the portals?
These already have a re gearing on them so you might not need to do a second re gearing unless you’re going for really big tires
@@tacomabeast thanks for the response. Still learning and trying to understand how portals work, also have been watching all the videos 74 weld has put out and gears are something I know nothing about so I apologize for all the questions.
