Why are portals called "Portals".
A portal axle effectively moves the axle shaft upward and gives you more axle clearance without having to run massive tires. The gears inside move the axle power to a separate smaller axle straight to the tire

Just google "portal axles". You'll see a drawing from behind, and you'll understand - their shape looks like a portal, because the actual axle is not on the same level with the wheel rotation axle.
100lbs down to 8... no wonder these things are so expensive
Have you considered casting the housings in aluminum or steel, like what the manufacturer do? Then machine the faces and recesses. Machining the shape just seems like a huge waste of time. 😮
A lot Less parts than an engine , but as much as a $20k car …. But it’s in Cali…. Makes since lol
