Welcome to Sydney. Make sure you understand your rental rights. We're in a housing crisis at the moment so landlords/real estate agents think they can get away with a lot of stuff. Tenants' Union of NSW gives a lot of info. Make sure that your bond was registered with the Rental Bond Board and that you have a receipt!

I’m a landlord, we aren’t all jerks. I’d like to know all this stuff we are getting away with 😂 I have one lot of tenants who were great for 12 months and when I renewed with them another 12 months at the same rent they have about 3-4 times now allowed their rent to lapse but because they make it up before day 8 I can’t do shit and have to deal with it. I don’t get that same leniency from my bank 🏦 without a late fee. Imagine if we could do that with tenants? Oh the bloody outcry!

@@mirelaxo Me too. What are we getting away with other than charging a rent that will make us a small profit and having to do major rehab when the tenant leaves because they can't take reasonable care.

Welcome to Oz - little tip, you don’t have to turn your washing machine taps off, but you also don’t need hot water if you choose a enzyme based powder like biozed, the hot water tap can be turned off permanently and you will save hundreds of dollars over a year on electric bills.

Welcome to Australia! I'm also a foreigner living in Australia- but my husband is Aussie, so it wasn't as difficult for me when we got our first apartment. But just wait if you try to buy a house!
If you have more issues with your landlord not living up to their end of the contract, you can contact Fair Trading NSW and file a complaint. We did it three times, and all three times the landlord did what he was required to do in the end, but we had to pay a fee to file, and it was a pain. I saw another poster who says that landlords/agents think they can get away with a lot of stuff. I completely agree.

Keep in mind .. If you file a complaint with the Rental Tribunal, it gets registered with other agents (they will warn each other ) and you will be questioned about it whenever you go for other rentals. Damned if you do...
Get used to the 'cockies' (cockroaches). The city is literally crawling with them... The "small ones" are German cockies and are hard to get rid of, sadly. Good luck.

Do you think putting the toaster at the small corner under the cabinet, where you put your bread and oats and rice, would give you more preparation space in front of the kettle?
About the spare room, instead of buying a bed in future, you could consider to buy an air mattress with electric pump. We bought ours couple of years ago from a camping shop when they were on sale. Very handy and comfortable. Just need to add a thin blanket during Winter and use the sponge method to check the hole, if it started to deflat 😄

I moved into a unit with fleas! Which I personally think is way worse than cockroaches….. I have also in the past had a cockroach infestation and I was told the house had a pest control done before I moved in which wasn’t true…. I basically then had to use the cockroach bombs which worked for a while. I’m an Australian so was use to creepy crawlies but getting attacked by fleas was horrible! 😕 good luck with your move.

Welcome to Australia and to Sydney. I also live in Sydney in the south West. Can i ask what suburb did you settle in? It's the most beautiful but also the most expensive city sadly. Unfortunately, it's just a fact of life right now. Wash your clothes in cold water only and yes you don't need to turn the taps on and off everytime, just leave them on but only the cold water, we don't even use the hot one. Do you have air con or a fan in the apartment? Are you near the beach? I would love to know how much it costs to set up an apartment with all the bits and pieces you need from scratch if your happy to share?
