uff a pool in the building? from a European perspective, I consider it luxurious to have a parking spot and a basement that isnt just a wardrobe, throw in a lift in the building and its gold :))
True hahaha I live in Europe as well, plus in a very expensive city and here it's like a luxury if you have a bedroom with a separate bed and don't sleep on a pull out couch 🤣 I recently moved and now have a dishwasher and I don't even know anymore what I should strive for now haha that's the ultimate luxury
Ok, after living in NYC for years I am absolutely baffled. I forgot about AUD for most of the video, and was thinking "Wow, $620 per week for this??? How cheap is Australia????" and then I did the conversion and my jaw is truly on the floor. NYC brain rot at its finest. Admittedly living in Japan now where the rents are shockingly cheap has shifted my perspective a little bit, but prices like this for places this modern???? You've legitimately blown my mind
@@scrivspo higher cost of living is compensated for by higher incomes. That's the case worldwide, generally speaking. I pay 1k Euro a month mortgage here for a (for US standards) small house, in NYC that house'd cost 3 times as much but were I doing the job I do in NYC I'd be paid 4 times as much or more.
@@jwenting That's definitely not true across the board though, particularly in NYC there are a ton of people who live below the poverty line and make below market rate for their jobs. I can't speak to the entire Euro market since that spans far too much, but generally speaking the social safety net in Europe is much better and people pay a much more reasonable percentage of their income towards their housing costs. In NYC the average salary is incredibly misleading due to the absurd concentration of extreme wealth, the median income is far more illuminating when looking at quality of life and cost of living for the average person- median $67,046 for a household, vs $107,000 average. For many households, the median income wouldn't even qualify as middle class (given the cost of living in the city.) Looking at the Cost of living index, Melbourne is great, and is proportionally much better than NYC.
Negative gearing laws in Australia allow you to lose money on rental income and claim it against your capital gains or personal tax income. The owner will be losing money at $650/w but claiming a loss to offset their tax, its likely costing the owner $800/w
Girl you had to leave us on a cliffhanger haha absolutely can’t wait for the Melbourne vids this chapter is going to be your wannabe nyc life with all the fashion and nightlife to come 🤩
I moved from Sydney to Melbourne nearly 2 years ago. We moved to Southbank and absolutely love the area that we purchased an apartment in the area this year! All the areas you looked are great! Personally I really like the docklands but it is a bit out of the way. South Yarra is also a great area to explore!
I’m moving to Melbourne very soon and also looking to buy a 2-bdr. Looking at Southbank and South Melbourne. Any advice you can give about which pockets are nice and which to avoid in those areas? Thanks!

Lived in Docklands and loved it. High-rise water views, free tram or short walk into the city, fully fibre NBN, for about the price of a car space in Pyrmont!
Surprised you didn't check out Brunswick! Let's go apartment 8! Definitely dodged a bullet by not going with anything Docklands, it's so 'close' to the city but you feel so so so far away. The apartment near the uni actually has loads of cafes and things behind it due to the university, has a really cute vibe, but living in a student apartment isn't the best idea. Apartment 7 has a sweet view but I reckon the area for 8 will suit you a lot better. Welcome to melbourne!
Interesting thought process. I personally don't like high buildings bc I am afraid of heights.👀 That cliffhanger! So I think I will be watching your next video 😊
I’m guessing Apartment 8!!! The construction is temporary but vibes in an area don’t change in a few months! (At first i thought Apartment 7 BUUUT Ik you said the experience in the city was a big deal for you so I do think it’s 8)
This video has been SO helpful, the way you narrated it and the smooth videoing was top quality. This gave a completely different perspective so thank you! If you don't mind me asking, where did you find these apartments? I have been on Domain searching but I was wondering if there is a better site. Thanks in advance girly love your videos!
I’m so happy it helped you and omg you’re going to love it here!!! Best city ever! I used Domain and Realestate.com but when we got here to apartment hunt, we used Tenant App as that’s where we could schedule all of the inspections. Please feel free to reach out if you have any more questions ❤️❤️❤️

woah.. i had no idea apartments were so affordable in melbourne. where i live $2600usd a month (650 a week) gets you a very crappy 2 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment with a tiny kitchen (when i say tiny i mean half the size of what you were calling tiny in the second apartment) and no living room, no amenities, and absolutely no parking to be found unless you want to cough up another $300+ a month for a parking spot if your place happens to have that option. i loved seeing what you can get in different ares for the money!
I would call these quite expensive too! They're all very very central, I'm looking at houses because want a garden and half an hour tram to the city $500 aud a month is doable! So half an hour out apartments similar to these around $400 are pretty available too!
always instering seeing how ppl who can afford way more than me go apt/house hunting and seeing their needs. also how prices world in different countries. all those high rises scary the shit out of me,fear of heights. also stairs.

There’s an app called tenant app and that’s where we found all these inspections! But also looked on all the real estate websites and contacted a few agents to help as well :)
In terms of areas, we originally thought we wanted the city but after spending a bit of time in the inner north suburbs (carlton, Collingwood, Fitzroy) we just knew that was the right vibe for us. There isn’t much of that community vibe in the city whereas those suburbs just had what we were looking for. Feel free to DM me on Insta if you need help x
Can you please share your process of looking for these apartments - what sites did you use, did you have an agent, what reddit thread were you reading?
I used TenantApp to book all my inspections and to find apartments I used Realestate.com and Domain. The Reddit thread would have most likely been r/Melbourne but I just googled “best suburbs in Melbourne for young couples Reddit” xx
Looking back, we absolutely should have ignored the city completely and checked out those suburbs. I love the vibe in Brunswick so much!! Never been to south Melbourne, I’ll have to visit! If u have any recommendations of where I should go, let me know hehe 🥰🥰
Hey! How did you arrange all of these apartment viewings? Was there a website you went on and pre-booked a time? Or were you working with one rental agency in mlb? 😊
I've found that when you're looking for a rental, always google the address. One agent might not have all the necessary photos of the property but a previous one might. I don't know why they all don't display the property photos. Hope that helps with your search.
I used to live near apartment 5, I would not move to lorimer street again unless it was closer to DFO. U have to walk 10 mins to get to a tram compared to the other side of docklands. also so expensive for the size. The Lorimer St. intersection is a nightmare in peak hour traffic to get to south melb/freeway. edit to add: the view at night is gorgeous though, and the best sunsets I've seen in australia were in that apartment haha.
so happy to have your insight on this!! we didn't end up choosing this one because it definitely felt far away... but my god it was BEAUTIFUL hahaha. the view was insane & i can't even imagine the sunsets!
The apartments are insane!!! I must ask (I'm also looking at moving), did you get a real estate person to help you, or did you guys do it all by yourselves? I'm having trouble finding the right one for me
We did it all ourselves! If you’re in Aus, I got the TenantApp and booked into a bunch of inspections through that. But yes, it was a fkn chaotic mess when we were there!! It’s hard doing it yourself hahaha!
Yes! Definitely was something I thought about! I intentionally left out specific suburbs for the places we loved. But yes, very great security in my building 🥰🥰
Cafes are always near by you might just have to suss it out a bit. Always always can walk a little or jump on a tram to good cafes, restaurants. Everywhere has a cool quirky spot. I think you would love hanging out in Brunswick, Fitzroy, south Yarra and CBD is really great. Check out age good food guide for the best food and cafe finds. You will love it 🥰 We have just built a brand new home in Fitzroy and it’s the best
Rent prices are always advertised as weekly here, so if you’re looking at apartments it’ll say $600pw instead of the monthly price. As far as paying rent, that’s up to the landlord. I’ve paid weekly rent & monthly rent in different apartments so it varies 😊
Apartments in Docklands are quite “affordable” compared to parts of Melbourne where people actually want to live. These apartments are probably going for $850/week now in 2024. And the worst part is, the popular areas of Melbourne you will pay outrageous amounts and you won’t get an apartment any where near as fresh and modern as the ones in this video. Docklands has a lot of potential but just lacks culture and vibe.
I'm halfway through but I'm so glad you realised Docklands wasn't the place to live cos that was my first thought :P Honestly if you want cafes, bars and vibes, it's not really found in areas that also have lots of high rise apartments
As I type this I don’t know where you chose to live. As a long time inner Melbourne resident I would suggest south of the river such as St Kilda Road, Prahran, Windsor and South Yarra. North of the river is too hippie and full of the snowflake pronoun types. Good luck with your move!
Wow ok normally I don’t think I look like other people but I can actually see the similarity between me and Maggie Lawson!! She’s like my hot aunt or something hahahaha
at your age I was living in a small worn out (20+ year old at the time, never renovated) apartment costing me 900 Euro a month, couldn't afford anything better... I know times have changed and so have prices, but that's a lot of money for a young couple for a place to live. Scaffolding is there temporarily, shouldn't be a problem if they can tell you when the work'll be done (hopefully soon). Of course if the scaffolding is there for structural support because the building is dangerous, run away as the place should have been condemned, but that doesn't appear to be the care with this specific building.
900 euro a month is pretty much spot on what we’re paying each per month (900 euro equates to $1,406 aud!) - it is a lot of money though, I think because we both work at home we can justify that price!
@@scrivspo ah, don't know the exchange rate, thought it was closer to 1:1 like it is with the Euro and the US dollar :) For that amount, those apartments look great, far better than what I got for the same.
Sorry for the cliffhanger. Which one do you think we chose? 👀

Rent prices are always advertised as weekly here, so if you’re looking at apartments it’ll say $600pw instead of the monthly price. As far as paying rent, that’s up to the landlord. I’ve paid weekly rent & monthly rent in different apartments so it varies 😊
@@scrivspo okay I did not know that was a thing 😊 thanks for the explication and good luck for the future for you and Ethan
welcome to Melbourne
Thank you queen!!!!
Which font have you used for the headings e.g. "apartment 2." at 3:21
It’s called Bely Display :)
@@scrivspo Thanks!
lol the realtor on the counter
he was such a legend omg!! best realtor ever
car spots are good equity, but in my case, not necessary, because I am close to everything
nice!
Totally agree!
Brunswick is a quirky suburb with cafes bars quirky stores shops
I love Brunswick! It’s a bit too far out from the city for us to live but we love spending a day there!!
my guess is apartment 8
can't wait to show u queen!!!
Is it in AUD or USD ?
Aud of course!
Feel like people’s expectations are so high
everyone has different needs!
I'm halfway through but I'm so glad you realised Docklands wasn't the place to live cos that was my first thought :P Honestly if you want cafes, bars and vibes, it's not really found in areas that also have lots of high rise apartments
Hahaha yep we realised this a little too late but so happy we aren’t in docklands 😂
I mean 8 seems like the play construction isn't forever.
Yep exactly!! We moved in to 8 🥰🥰
i definitely think apt 7 was the move
Glad you liked it!!
I assume the noise would go away after they finish construction so my guess is 8
can't wait for you to find out!!
As I type this I don’t know where you chose to live. As a long time inner Melbourne resident I would suggest south of the river such as St Kilda Road, Prahran, Windsor and South Yarra. North of the river is too hippie and full of the snowflake pronoun types. Good luck with your move!
haha thanks for your insight david!
Bro you look so much like Alicia Silverstone meets Maggie Lawson
Wow ok normally I don’t think I look like other people but I can actually see the similarity between me and Maggie Lawson!! She’s like my hot aunt or something hahahaha
Wow! Way to leave us hanging
Hehehe I’m sorry I had to!!!!
Docklands the best
I’m glad you like it!!
I guess #8!!
Can’t wait for you to find out hehe ❤️❤️
@@scrivspo me too! :)
Docklands is a soulless place. That's why people hate it.
Hahaha
at your age I was living in a small worn out (20+ year old at the time, never renovated) apartment costing me 900 Euro a month, couldn't afford anything better...
@@scrivspo ah, don't know the exchange rate, thought it was closer to 1:1 like it is with the Euro and the US dollar :)
For that amount, those apartments look great, far better than what I got for the same.
Number 7

It's a primary or main bedroom. Not a master bedroom. Unless you actually own slaves ...in which case ...never mind.
this was filmed in 2022 but yes i don't say that anymore!
@@scrivspo You are so cool. :)
Some people might have been offended and that was not my focus.
