They’ve randomly introduced a similar cut out in the Velocity Nitro 3 too and can confirm it’s now a rock magnet too. All to safe a few grams of foam weight seems a bit silly.
@gwynncompton6777 it's not just the weight, also gives the foam space to expand for cushioning and can improve stability. But I've caught stones in my Deviate 2 as well and making it wider and/or shaped differently could help reduce that.
It's a good shoe, but based on RunRepeat, the heel stack height is only 31.7 mm, which is quite low. I felt it in my knees during longer runs. Deviate 3 is much better in this case with 37.4 mm, and Magnify 2 has a similar height of 37.1 mm.
I don't comment often. But this review is spot on. Alot more detailed, compared to most other reviews of this shoe. Also stating in detail the differences between this shoe, and the previous version. Just got my second pair of Deviate Nitro 2 for 75USD, really great price for the "GOAT" of arounder. the Gen 3 looks fire still, but i'm bit mind the extra weight on it. looking forward to see your review on Deviate nitro elite 3🙌
Perfect timing and excellent review! I had these sitting in my cart to use as an all-around daily trainer but I’m glad to see your Puma lineup and alternative comparisons that probably suit my needs better for off-season training. I still may go Puma for 2025 season. Thank you Kofuzi!
I have 180 miles on my DN2, for sure will continue to put on many more. DN2, Superblast 2, nimbus 26 are my rotation. I’m yet to buy a race day shoe, for now the superblast will do.
I have the DN3Elite. It’s an amazing shoe, comfy, bouncy and helps propel me to go even faster. Would recommend probably going half a size down though as it runs surprisingly long. I had to heel lock them to eliminate bad heel rub
I loved the Deviate Nitro 1, and just recently picked up the Deviate Nitro 2 for 64€ at the Puma Outlet. Nice to see that the third version seems to continue being a great versital running shoe.^^
I just got the ascis novablast 3 after watching your video about it and honestly it is great shoe so far! I was considering the puma deviate nitro 2 but the $20 difference was the tie breaker 😂
I got this in a pre-release here in Germany. I have about 150 km on it. I think the ride is slightly more cushioned than v2. I don't like the heel. I agree that the shark fin thingy stuck on the back is useless. The heel counter could have been better (See the Nitro Velocity 3s for an excellent heel fit and counter), and I have to use the runner's loop to get a secure fit - I don't have to do that with my Velocity 3s. Both are the exact same sizes. It's not the bad shoe, but it could have been better. Thanks for your review.
Was waiting this review from you thanks @kofuzi! DN2 was a beast of a shoe, i was tempted to upgrade it but i went with another pair instead. Velocity nitro 3 was a letdown for me and i'm in doubt with this newer version. It is difficult to improve what is already at a very high level.
So which one do you prefer after trying, version 2 or 3? 😄 Really surprised also how the mach 6 and rebel v4 was not included in the alternatives 😅 Overall, nice review as always Mike. Watched it from start to finish 💪
Ohh I see. Missed that part. Was too focused on the daily trainer/workout type of shoes that I forgot that the two featured alternatives were plated. Thanks!
I feel like there is a convergence of design in running shoes -- particularly features such as dual density foams and that center channel. The latter does more than give the user an opportunity to admire the carbon plate, but might actually be functional in allowing the foam to have a place to go when it squishes. I think the old DN2's version of Pumagrip is still better for offroad use.
I've never owned a Puma running shoe, but I've been trying to read the brand's reviews to get to know their models better. From everything I heard in this video, what I liked most and was interested in was knowing that the midsole is relatively firm, as I hate soft midsoles, at any level.
Great review as always! I currently have a cloudsurfer as a daily training and superblast as a do-it-all shoe and looking to add another into the rotation. Was considering among Magic Speed 4, Deviate Nitro 3, Brooks Hyperion 2/Max 2, Endorphin Speed 3. Any thoughts!

I think the Nitro Elite in the 2 just wrapped over the Nitro in the forefoot of the 2. If you look at the bottom the Nitro foam is continuous thru those exposed grooves in the forefoot.
I have yet to test the mach x2. I have some predictions on whether I think it would be a good comparison shoe vs the deviate nitro 3, but I will reserve for when/if I test the Mach X2
Hey Mike - thanks for the run through and comparison… Which would you say compares best to the saucony speed2…I’ve had multiple pairs up to 900kms, love them. Speed 3’s and I did not get along, but as I can’t find deviate nitro 2’s in my size I’m looking for a new speed day shoe and I’m drawn to these three. Daily trainer I’m in now is the Novablasts which I’m getting on really well with. Any advise appreciated
currently got an ES3 and Hoka Mach 6 in this range, tried out the peg plus as it's an old fave, and definitely found I liked the nitro 3 more, keen to get a pair when my mach 6 is dead for those threshold/tempo runs.
Great review thanks, maybe i will take your advice and start first with the deviate nitro 2. I will use it for long runs, not for cruising or easy miles nor for race day or realy fast pace but for a steady pace training towards 30-50k. Is this shoe suitable for that kind of work or would you recommend something else?
Calling it. Tempo trainer of the year. DN3>ES4 for many/most people. Lighter. Stiffer. Faster. $10 Cheaper. And prettier, arguably. (Except for the ES4 x REI exclusive which was stunning but already sold out.) Get the ES4 if you need a softer foam and softer plate.
Thank you for the PDN3 review 👍 the older version(2) has been my fav shoe for long runs and I guess I will stick to it. Eventhough the new one is slightly lighter. But any reason why they thought of increasing the stack size?
went to the Puma store today to buy the DN3, but came out with a Puma MagMax, a super stack cushioned trainer. First time I buy a running shoe before watching Kufozi review it…

I've been exacerbatedly telling people since 2016 that heel drop is the most overrated shoe spec, especially when we have many different types of foams that we are talking about

Kofuzi knows the pain of the rock magnet. 🤣👍🏼
Agree that it feels a tad firmer. Still a top option though
I've cut the foam around the slot to a wider angle, no stone pick up at all now.
