Stu, the issue with 911 turbo's in Australia is there is no where except a track (or Westbrook Avenue ;) to enjoy that performance without fearing for your license with every squirt. Buy something you can drive at 9/10th's that handles well to keep the smile factor high. You've ticked the crazy fast porsche box.
Glad it worked out in the end Stu. I can relate to your thoughts at 8:42 with my first gen Boxster. It's a fraction of your Turbo's price, but I too worry about leaving it parked unattended. I think it's the effect P-cars cars can have on people. They seem to create a sense of childlike wonder and excitement in even non-car people. But many don't realise they're cheaper to buy than their 3-5 year old Corolla, so you get the occasional judgemental look. My wife loves it and so do I. All the best deciding where to from here with the Turbo.
Just came across this channel. Great little video. I love cars, particularly Porsches, and have considered buying a 911 in the past. But your experience is the sort of thing that really put me off purchasing a classic, particularly when you consider the manufacture of an ABS system would not even cost this sort of price. Frankly, its crazy that Porsche makes such parts bespoke from model to model. Further, unless you’re in the UK or Europe, you’re just not going to have available those workshops that either rebuilt or build OEM equivalent parts. My suggest is enjoy your experience with the car, tick the box, and move on. Plenty of cars with lots of horse power, good handling and great looks.
Thanks Jason. I guess it's lucky they made so many of them and one can still find parts worldwide if one is a bit patient. And the world is small now, so one can buy and deliver virtually anywhere. Hopefully it doesn't put you off too much. The 996 is still a great car from base model Carrera to Turbo and undervalued in the overall 911 lineup. But yes, I think I've had my time. This car is so blisteringly fast it if ever you get your right foot all the way down it leaves you shaking. (it is running 20psi boost, twice that of a standard turbo). Almost 800 NM torque. A 3 second squeeze on the throttle will easily get you in serious trouble with authorities. I think I've had my fun.
KEEP IT !!! Still... you have worked hard, you enjoy it, you do not need the money and that's it. Just enjoy and I am sure there will be another moment where you can switch it for something just as exiting. Greets from Amsterdam. Cheers!
If you sold it I think you'd regret letting it go. I have a love/hate relationship with my BMW 335i convertible. I love driving it. I love the comments i get and the looks from passersby when they see and hear it. I love driving on sunny days with the top down. I don't love the fact that I've spent over $5K on it since I bought it in October. I don't love that characteristic BMW "bloing" sound that means it's just done something expensive again ( or I haven't put my seatbelt on).
Thanks. Actually we’ve nearly exhausted our personal collections now, Stu Porsche turbo, Cayman and 944. Myself the BMW M2 and Ferrari 360 vids, yet to get to my series one Lotus Elise. But watch this space !

Stu, you either need to fall back in love with the car or sell it. You may not need to drive the car every day, but you have to enjoy it when you do and not be worried about something going wrong that you cannot afford to fix. I watched the start of the video again, just to see how you were with the car now knowing the issue. I think you need to sell it. It would be great if you could get that 930, but aside from that, I know there are other cars you have had on the channel that have excited you more.
Thanks Gavin. I know the basic mechanicals of the car are incredibly robust (especially as the whole engine and drivetrain were pulled down and built from scratch at great expense to the previous owner 30k km ago) and perhaps the same bill-shock might happen with even a base model Carrera or Boxster. And I can't pretend that a vintage 930 would be any cheaper. Probably the opposite. I will endeavour to enjoy the car more.
@@inCARnationAustralia …then maybe we might see the car on the channel again? How about a road trip! Being in the UK, I get the double benefit of seeing your amazing countryside.
I had a similar issue with my 996 turbo. ABS pump started leaking badly. I found a used unit off eBay for $500 and exchanged the electrical part. I added a new brake master cylinder for $575 and fixed. A new ABS pump is something like $6,000.
Since I bought an MG I have been importing a lot of parts from the UK. International freight is so hit and miss, I've found. I've had parts arrive from the UK long before parts ordered locally get here - and other times a month goes by with the parts seemingly disappearing into the void, to arrive unannounced. I've never owned anything as exotic as a Porsche, but I also find the power in my Nissan 370Z is often more than enough for the street, especially with how zealous NSW highway patrol is when it comes to going slightly over the speed limit. I can barely breathe on the throttle and I'm in the danger zone. I often find the MG is more fun to drive as I can drive it hard but I'm at legal street speed limits. I watch a few other TH-camrs who work on their own Ferraris/Lamborghini/etc and it's funny how much mechanics or dealers will charge for a branded part when you can get the exact same part except it's something like a Volkswagen part and it's actually reasonably priced - even though it's the same thing.
It’s probably a bit too much car to enjoy on the road, especially if you’re not happy taking it out for track days. I’ve got a 987 Boxster and for me that’s plenty of poke on the road. Any more and I’ll lose my license for sure, and that would be really inconvenient.
Love you car and how beautiful it is. But you’ll never be able to enjoy it fully. So I hope you took advantage of the current market and sold it. Use the proceeds to buy something you can daily and love. Great vid Cheers

My car currently currently going through the same issue, I have also just received news from ECU TUNING that they aren’t able to do anything about it due to some internal fault. I have requested for a report to get a better understanding as I know that each component of the pump can be repaired other than the aluminum block itself. really enjoyed your video. Can you share which exhaust you had and the new one you fitted? Thanks!!! I hade a modded 996TT and a horible drone at 2-3k in top gear
Sure Paul. The noisy one was a Fabspeed system, but I found it had hollowed out cats, which would have contributed to the noise. And the big flames on gearchanges. I replaced it with a CarGraphic system, with 200CEL cats. Don't know the model numbers. Deejay Markski is the man to talk to (if you're in the USA) about exhausts. www.markskituning.com . Hello and love the videos- thank you. Having also lived in Syd and run around in a modified turbo 996 (gt2 w the EVO ms 650hp kit) for a couple of years - I reached that same position you do in the video re ownership. So…. Sold it and and haven’t looked back. For fun I suggest a car that you can still bury the throttle in but not be doing 200kmh in just a few seconds. Eg m3, non turbo Porsches etc. good luck and keep those wonderful videos coming.
Will be interesting to see (IMHO in about 3 or 4 years) when markets normalise, will modern classics rise or fall in price. My e46 M3 is say 10-15k but you need 1-2k pa AND 5k reserved for stuff like this. To then have it sat there for a dozen trips each year. Is that good value/ use of capital??
You might regret it in 10 years, like i did with the old rx7. But then you'll realise how many holidays you got to enjoy without paying for new parts all the time
What an adventure! Sounds stressful. Luckily, your patience paid off! What else is in your garage? With all the HP wars, I think it’s easy to lose perspective. I have a 2009 Cayman (base) with 265 hp and even that can be a lot for the road. But what a great driving experience! It seems to me that a lower hp model is more fun on a daily basis (fast-car-slow and all that). Or maybe I’m only telling myself stories because I couldn’t afford the high-end stuff anyway! :-) Love your videos.
I have a Cayman very similar to yours Michael. And it's great. Involving, nimble, adequate power, sounds great. I agree with you that lowered powered cars can be more fun - Boxster, Cayman, MX5, or the recent hot hatches we reviewed i20N, i30N. These things are a bundle of fun and very accessible performance. It's still possible to find occasions to exploit a part (but never all) of the Turbo's performance, but rarely. Thanks for the compliment. SG
OK, so this happened on my 996 turbo here in Dubai, UAE. Pump was leaking so I had it rebuilt by BBA Reman in U.K. for approx £1000. If the unit is not rebuildable, you can fit another unit as long as the part number indicates it’s a newer part than the one originally fitted to your car. At the time, there were quite a few for sale on eBay
Kinda seems like the fundamental problem of a 'super car' to anyone who has to think about money. Too fast to enjoy properly on the street, but too expensive or fragile to track. That mostly just leaves looking really cool.
Very biased opinion, but you've got a real gem there. Keep it. On another note, what was the previous exhaust system it had on it, and what did you replace it with? I'm considering upgrading the stock exhaust to a Kline, SOUL Performance, iPE inconel valvetronic, or maybe go full splurge on an Unobtainium system. Stock is just too quiet.
Difficult decision. I've been a passenger in a friend's 996 Turbo a few times and its incredible. He drives it a lot and has done tours of the UK in it. It's definitely a car to be driven. Maybe you could organise a road trip and have an adventure in it and hopefully find the love.

I am the same as yoo, took me best part of 30 years to get one, had a 996 carrera 2, sold that and bought a turbo, exhaust went last week, £1000 for an exhaust...why????
By 996TT standards, that seems not a lot. See it as an opportunity Sam. Maybe time for an aftermarket exhaust upgrade. Have you seen the fabulous stuff over at www.markskituning.com/?
@@inCARnationAustralia yep. Already have an aftermarket fitted, (look in my vids, you will see a vid of it)I have now gone for a different type in an attempt to minimize drone, running 500 bhp, going on Marski's site is dangerous for the wallet..lol
I’ll offer my 2cents worth. You don’t/can’t/won’t use it because there’s a risk, cost, depreciation issue. And it’s too fast. It’s like an expensive addiction. Your head says kick the habit but in your heart you love it and it’s probably been and still is a good investment. Cars like this were built for a specific mission but you can rarely use that potential in Europe due to congestion and legislation let alone Australia where enforcement is tough. Time to transfer the love to something you can connect with at one tenth not ten tenths of its performance. So sell it. Start looking for a replacement. Find a good looking car that smells, sounds and feels good to use and maybe go older, slower and cheaper.
That's a lot more than 2 cents worth, and thanks for another considered reply. It is frustrating having a car where you can only exploit a fraction of the performance. But yeah I do love it for what it is. Driving around this last week in an IONIQ 5 AWD with 600Nm of torque, I've been thinking - blissful silence, great stereo, every possible driver aid, and a car that handles, goes and stops, and would cost bugger all to own and drive every day. And can take my bass guitar, amp and speakers as well. Ticks every box... and yet I don't feel an emotional connection with it. You're right - so I think it's only a matter of time. I do still have the poverty-pack Cayman when I feel the 3-pedal itch.
The quote didn't have a large labour component - it was all parts. Their labour rates aren't unusually high - it's visible on the first invoice. As always with specialist shops, you're not paying for the hours worked, you're paying for their forty+ years experience. And I know where they were sourcing the parts from in Europe and there wasn't a lot of markup. I don't want to mention the business by name, lest it be seen as either a recommendation or expose.
sell it then work out what the most money you'd feel comfortable spending for a car is while being ok with leaving it in a carpark/daily chores. once you have that number in mind start searching for what you can buy then you can enjoy what you have. we own things. things shouldnt own us.
Thanks, but don't say war. Aren't you meant to call it a 'special operation'? а ты говоришь по русски?? When you say 'do your homework', do you mean google the sites you prefer? What would you suggest? Maybe this one? th-cam.com/video/mnO_10DttSc/w-d-xo.html If you think that's a fake and have a strong stomach, maybe this one : russoldat.info/ Maybe they're all actors.

Keeeepppp iit
Who are the Guru's that wanted 26k? They must be pretty good if they're charging 10k an hour for labour.
Those cars were made to be driven, that’s for sure.
sell it then work out what the most money you'd feel comfortable spending for a car is while being ok with leaving it in a carpark/daily chores. once you have that number in mind start searching for what you can buy then you can enjoy what you have. we own things. things shouldnt own us.
nice car mate but do your homework on this russian ukrainian war. your bias is obvious but i believe you're illinformed.
Thanks, but don't say war. Aren't you meant to call it a 'special operation'? а ты говоришь по русски??
When you say 'do your homework', do you mean google the sites you prefer?
What would you suggest? Maybe this one? th-cam.com/video/mnO_10DttSc/w-d-xo.html
If you think that's a fake and have a strong stomach, maybe this one : russoldat.info/
Maybe they're all actors. What would I know.
