    I grew up next door to the local high school principal. He drove a late 30's or early 40's coupe. It was not a hot rod but just a cool old car. I just recalled him painting his car black out front of his house, in the street with a vacuum cleaner and one of those spray bottles. We're talking 60 plus years ago! The memory was just like it happened yesterday! Thanks for the video.

      That's a really good story mate, it's amazing how things stay in our memory from when we were kids. When I was in primary school here in Melbourne, our principal lived quite literally next door to our school, and my memory of him was a couple of years into high school when I was working after school at the local Golden Fleece petrol station. My ex primary principal came in to get fuel, and while I'm filling his car he looked at me and said " gee , those numbers really click over fast now don't they ". It was the only time he had ever spoken to me, and I didn't even understand the comment. Years later after hundreds of fill ups I started chuckling to myself as the numbers kept clicking away faster and faster. Mind you, when old Mr Brown made his comment in 1979 , I think the price was 28 cents per litre. It's been as high as $2:35 recently, and is now around $1 : 73. Cheers from Australia.

    I spent 5 years in my youth spraying lacquer on cabinets, so I have some experience there. I always thought I would die young from lung problems, since all we used were just those little foam masks, at most. But here I am at 72, and I can outwalk most of my high school and college friends. The old joke with lacquer paint was that you could get a perfectly acceptable lacquer paint job on a car with a windex bottle...if the lacquer wouldn't melt the plastic. This sprayer is just a little bit better than that. The trick, of course, is sanding between coats to knock down all of the bumps.

      I agree. One of my mates painted his Harley with a vacuum cleaner spray gun in the early 80s, and it was considered ridiculous back then. But it turned out really nice. He must have made loads of coats and wet sands because it looked beautiful when it was polished. As stated in Puddin's video, it's all about the skill and using what you have.

    You showed a good chunk of my shop in those boxes, still use a lot of them, got a few old Sun units, dwell tachs, voltmeters, etc. Since most of stuff I work on is pre 1980, they still get used some but am getting old, body wont do as my mind says it should, old age sucks but at least am still kicking. You're right, lacquer paint smells good!

    I remember my mom had a vacuum with one of those sprayers. Though the instructions didn't say (that I remember) anything about painting. It was more like spraying your roses and shrubs etc. with bug spray, or fumigating your house if you had lice and stuff.
    I've heard about spraying paint with them but never seen it done. Thanks for that.
    I think you got a good deal on your sale finds. My dad had one of those Dorman "dooeys" with cotter pins in it. I may still have it, I don't remember. It might have been busted and got tossed. I've been picking up tools at yard and estate sales for decades. I've gotten some good tools and good deals that way. I tell youngsters starting out to do that instead of buying new.
    Have a good 'un!

    We were issued the silicone cloth in Marine boot camp back in 1969. Our main use for it was to wipe off surface rust from our rifles and other metal equipment. It also helped protect the metal from rusting again. I also remember using it to shine the concrete floors in our squad bay before inspection. I'm sure if I dug deep enough in my old seabag I could probably find a silicone cloth in there somewhere.

    very cool! i've heard about and read about these for years but never saw one in action. i'm told the trick to a good job is to lay down lots and lots of coats and then sand and sand to get that show finish. fwiw there are several types of british racing green depending on the manufacturer; that looks like an mg green whereas aston-martin is lighter/more silver, jaguar is that dark you're thinking about, and so on. thanks for this demonstration!

    Back in the day I was going to paint my 57 Chevy and I pointed out to a friend the color that I wanted to paint it, and he said Oh that's British racing green.. So when it came time to take my car to the paint shop, I told my dad to tell the guy to paint it British racing green.. Dad said, I think u outta go down there and pick the color out from the paint catalog.. I wanted to spend some time with my girlfriend, so I didn't go... When the car was finished and I went to pick it up, I saw the color of the car and I was sick... You see, our Telephone Co trucks were green with orange fenders.. You could see em a mile away... Well my 57 was Telephone Co green.. I later discovered that the color that I wanted was 68 Pontiac green, but at least I didn't have orange fenders.. I guess I should mention that the guy that gave me the bogus info is no longer a friend...

    I used one when i was about 15. Me and the next door neighbor bought a 41 Ford 2 door sedan that didn't run. We got it running with out much work. We decided it needed paint so we did it with the vacuum cleaner paint adapter and it didn't turn out half bad. To this day the old Ford Flathead is still my favorite engine and the first one i ever worked on. Love your channel!

    Yes. I painted a 1946 4 door ford at 13 years old in 1955. One of the hardest whipping my mother ever gave me was for using her new Electrolux vacuum. But I did keep and use that vacuum to vacuum my cars out till the 1990. The car was a $20.00 Army Surplus that was really rough. I took of all the chrome trim off and dimpled the holes and used Devcon epoxy to fill them. Used electrical tape to tape off a few things. I found a gallon of black paint in the shed left over from painting clothes line post. I had never seen a spray gun or even been in a body shop in my life. But in my later years I did learn how to hand rub lacquer. But growing up in the rural mountains of Western North Carolina the only thing I had to go by was a tiny book or an occasional Hot Rod Magazine.

    @stephenboitoult8774 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Of course it works! It's so simple it can't help but work! Back in early 70s Britain I painted a Ford Anglia with one of these and several part cans of different shades of dark blue cellulose paint from my boss's paint store all mixed together. Must have been the cheapest respray ever, I think we charged the girl who owned the car about £25 all in!
    Because the pressure is so low (10-12psi) you need the paint really thin, about 70/30% thinners to paint ratio. So many coats is a fact of life!

I then clear coat it with 3 or 4 coats then wet sand it & polish to a high shine. I sure wouldn't try a vacuum attachment 😂. I got my dremal at 14, I'm 61 & it is still workin great

    I'd say you made out like a bandit on the two boxes of goodies . Mom got a new Electrolux in '58 , but her's didn't have the sprayer attachment , it did have the one to fill your garment bags with the fumes from moth balls though . I have that sweeper to this day , but haven't seen the moth ball attachment in years . I seem to recall articles from the fifties , claiming that " they had laid down X number of coats of lacquer , and buffing between each coat . " Sounds like a good way to remove your fingerprints , for a future life of crime .

    You scored really well with the $50 box! That Tarp grommet kit is MILES better than the crap sold today. And did even better on the $15 box! The Dorman hardware kits were worth that alone!
