"he's overreaching with his high notes" >The version that's actually in Singles is live and he belted it out even higher....while hanging upside down from the ceiling over the stage.
His vocal prime had to be about 1988 to around the time Euphoria Morning came out. Regardless of that, Chris was the greatest rock vocalist of the last 30+ years.
Metal heads praise Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson, Dio, King Diamond etc for the high pitch singing. Chris Cornell deserves to be in that group of singers. He can hit those highs just as them. While he pinches at times it adds the fragility that I adore. He sounds like an Angel that fell to earth yet still sings to the above. It’s so human yet wonderful
Yeaaahh man.. one of my all-time favorit song, really love how cornell's reach high notes, and of course the 7-4 pattern makes this sound unique. Cornell's voice scale change into more low bold and rasp when he getting older, "Billie jean" and "Preaching the end of the world" are another awesome voicing from him. You did great reaction sir, Maantaaaappp 🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾👊🏽👊🏽
@@jona7504 it gets played at least every second week at my place and half of it on my cars UBS stick. I NEVER tire of this OST, and never will. Add in I actually LOVE the movie, a cult follower here. So I see the movie at times in my head during certain songs lol
Agree.. every single track on this ost album are so great. From Chloe dancer by MLB , Would by AIC, Breathe by PJam untill Nearly Lost You by Screaming Trees all these songs are absolutely cool, and i grew up with all of this.
Love when you react to soundgarden! You should definitely react to the studio version of the song Loud love (it has a really cool intro part). Keep up the awesome content.
It's interesting that you said you didn't hear the bass on this. Maybe just because I play bass but the power chords that Ben Shepard plays every measure really stick out in the mix to me. His bass parts are always really interesting and you could probably mistake them for a another guitar track. the guitar tone and drumming are also super heavy. Chris's vocals as well are insane, dude had crazy range and power.
F*CK YEAH!!! I’ve been waiting for someone to react to this. Should have known to check your channel David. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼💜💜💜💜 The Singles soundtrack in it’s entirety is still a phenomenal listen to this day. Brings me back to hearing it all for the first time many moons ago!!
I think my favorite version of Birth Ritual is the one from Singles, especially the live Blu-Ray version out there. The version on Telephantasm (which contains some songs not released on earlier albums) has a bit too much effect on it, so I go with the live version or the Badmotorfinger Deluxe demo version. I love Soundgarden a lot, so I'm glad you react to them as much as you do. And it'd be cool to see you react to the "Live At Paramount 1992" performances, as a lot of those are fantastic and Chris Cornell goes HAM on the best ones. "Searching With My Good Eye Closed" is one of those, and it's on the official Soundgarden channel too!
I was 19/20 yrs old when I dated a guy who was a roadie for them. Long story short, my older sister made me go with her to a Lollapalooza show. She was dating someone in one of the bands and didn’t like to go alone but at the same time disliked inviting her college friends. This is where I enter the picture. I was still living at home on the farm. I went to the show and that’s where I met my roadie bf. Few months later he flew me to Chicago for the weekend. Had zero idea how lucky I was at the time. They performed at The Aragon Ballroom. Top 10 most memorable shows of my life so far. I’m now 49. Such an amazing experience, especially for a nobody farm girl at that time in my life. They were so kind to me, made me feel important by asking questions about my life . At least they pretended to be interested. I can’t remember his name (Kim?) we would see him in the hotel bar and he would come over and sit with us to chat. Everyone was lovely.
7/4 allows a deep groove if done right that's seemingly predictable but not entirely. You get into it but it's not "comfortable". So it keeps you in a state of unease as a listener but not like dread -- just something is off but not in a bad way. Peter Gabriel's Salsbury Hill is another example of 7/4 where the vocal line on the verse begins on the 5 count and ends with an accented vocal syllable on the 1 in the next measure -- and that was a "pop" song. So yeah 7/4 is a wonderful time signature to mix and muck things up a bit without being too obvious or seemingly trying too hard. And man is Matt Cameron killing it on drums on this song adding fills that begin on atypical subcounts adding an incredible push pull effect of deep pocket groove mixed with frenetic fills adding tension.
DUDE for someone who has NO education in engineering David, again you SURE know a lot from picking things up over the years! It's nice hearing you speak about that side! People do NOT understand the artistry itself behind a soundboard mixing. IF you do NOT have Aryeon on your list let me know, a MUST for the queue... MIND blowing engineering and production to an already amazing arrangement of Prog music!
[tkon3d idling] posted a good live video of this song. Can find under title: [HD] Soundgarden - Birth Ritual (1992 LiVE Singles Bluray) Apparently this didn't make on SuperUnknown album because of a legal tie-up because it previously appeared on a singles compilation.
Even back then (1993?) I thought this was the heaviest shit I ever heard. TOOL was coming out around the same time and my musical/drumming life was never the same. Still can't really deal with 7's, though. I totally struggle with odd time because I stink. Oh, well. Ringo was good. Right?
@@BradCross1982 perhaps not. I was thinking of it in terms of time, considering they were going until 2017 when Chris died. But, if you take out the years they were not together, it's probably not early. There was a pretty distinct change in Chris' singing around the time of Badmotorfinger. This song sounds more like his singing on Loud Love,.
That’s the tragedy of great vocalists: they put so much wear and tear on their vocals, it ruins it in the long run. Chris and Phil Anselmo are both great vocalists, but all that screaming took their toll on both. Chris’s voice got gradually rougher and Phil’s has, too.

Just fucking watched that!!
My favorite SG song. Blows me away like whatever 35 years later or whatever.
7/4 spins back into itself and it's soo neat. Chris is just a God.
I can't imagine someone criticizing Chris' vocals in any song. That it sounds so raw is what gives it the power in my opinion.

I don't agree. His vocal prime was between 1990-94
@@riecetruss3408 Agree. Id even go further and say he peaked at Bamotorfinger.

it's so natural playing in 7/4 that I'VE NEVER PAID ATTENTION TO THAT in this song hahaha
Definitely, I have a fair few songs in 7 by now, soon as you get used to it it just flows normally.

Yeah, you're right about the vocals. This is pretty early in Soundgardens career. He hasn't really refined his singing yet. Still a great song though.
