    I just got so excited to see you did this song! Lol great reaction!
    Some history, this was the first song Eddie ever heard himself on a real record. So Eddie had just joined PJ and they were sitting around waiting for rehearsal one day while Chris was tinkering with this song and he couldn’t quite get the low parts how he wanted them, when Eddie stepped in and sang it exactly how Chris was hearing it in his head, so Chris decided to keep him on the track. (Ed did backing vocals on the rest of the album). Chris was such a beautiful, generous man to invite not only Stone and Jeff to do this tribute to Andy Wood but also Mike and Eddie.

  • @jasonkart1651
    @jasonkart1651 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    Eddie Vedder originally wasn't supposed to sing on this song. They were rehearsing and he was there and Chris was having a hard time with the lower notes and Eddie just started singing and it became a duet. This was actually made before 10 but released after so this song is the first recording of Eddie singing with stone, Mike and Jeff. At the time Matt Cameron was in soundgarden as their drummer its 4 members of what became pearl jam not including matt Cameron who became pearl jam's drummer later and 3 members of soundgarden including Chris. Great song but sad to think how many more songs Eddie and Chris could have done later.

Funny when you think that Chris told Jeff & Stone, "so you have a new guy in the vocals, let me test him". Was the first Ed's experience in a pro studio. An Chris gave them his seal of approval...

    Been a Pearl Jam fan my whole life. Seen them in concert numerous times. Eddie Vedder is one of my favourite vocalists of all time. I even got to play hacky sack with the band before their concert in NZ back in 92. Any time anyone told me about a vocalist that was better than Eddie I'd politely say no, Eddie is the man. I stubbornly stuck to that belief for years.
    In this song though? I gotta give it to Chris (RIP). He sings his ass off, and yes, I'll admit it, he out-sings Eddie in this one.
    I miss the 90s. So many good bands. People listening to "music" these days don't know what they were missing.
    Sad that out of the great grunge vocalists of my childhood that Eddie is the only only who is still with us today.

    Pearl Jam didn't exist yet Mike McCready and Eddie Vedder were from other bands
    Stone Gossard and were from Mother Love Bone it's a Supergroup
    Album was made in tribute to Andrew Wood

    • @jmhaces
      @jmhaces 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Agreed. What would ultimately become Pearl Jam didn't even really exist yet, and many years would still go by until Matt Cameron would end up being Pearl Jam's drummer. When the record came out, Temple of the Dog was basically two guys from MotherLoveBone, two guys from Soundgarden, one guy formerly from the band Shadow, and one guy from Chicago by way of San Diego who nobody knew.

    • @rhysbader4552
      @rhysbader4552 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, Eddie was still in San Diego surfing and working, Stone sent him the music for black and couple other songs which would later become pearl jam songs, Chris heard him and brought him to Seattle. Temple of the Dog was a tribute band to Andrew Wood of Mother love Bone, which Mike and Jeff were apart of. Chris was having problems hitting the low notes, so Eddie sang them, Chris and Matt went back to Soundgarden, then Pearl Jam was formed, Matt Joined the band after Soundgarden when on hiatus.

      All of it actually. PJ existed as a band while they were making Temple of the dog project. Everyone of them was already a member. Eddie came in Seattle mid october of 1990. for an audition after Jeff, Stone and Mike heard Moma son tape. He was in after 2 days. On the 7th day of becoming a band they played they first gig in Off Ramp caffe-22.october 1990 (wich is more then amazing) . The name they were using was Mookie Blaylock . Eddie then got back to San Diego and quickly return to Seattle, again for 7 days, and they worked on the songs Making of Ten had already started. Eddie, after that second time, went back to get his stuff from SD, and moved to Seatlle for good..They did TOTD project when Eddie was already living in Seattle..Temple of the dog was formed in decembar of 1990. It was a project that Chris kind of started and then ask Jeff, Stone and Mike to join, and their new shy guy Eddie with that special voice(Ed helped him with lower parts and Chris was amazed ) . That record was made little before Ten, but by all means PJ was a band in that time, they were even perfoming quite often actually, but just went by a different name (M. Blaylock).They've changed the name in '91, couple of months before release of Ten. These information, are literary everywhere.wikipedia i think . interviews from that period. ..PJ 20 documentary... That' s just a fact.I think that every fan of Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, TOTD knows this. It's kind of basic stuff.

    Fun fact, Eddie wasn't originally supposed to be on the song. The band was recording and Cornell was having trouble getting the low notes right and Eddie just stepped in and nailed it. Cornell liked it so much and said Eddie did it exactly how he did envisioned it and asked him to do it for the album. This was a tribute album by the surviving members of Mother Love Bone and Cornell after the lead singer Andy Wood died. The surviving members went on to form Pearl Jam. Cornell was Andy's roommate.

      It's a common mistake that people think Chris had a bigger vocal range then Eddie, and that it's not true at all. Eddie has amazing 5 octave vocal range.,Chris has 4 octaves (4 is also incredible vocal range, Chris was amazing) The thing is, their style of singing was different and approach to singing melody was also different..so as their way of expresing them self true singing. While Chris liked to go very high quite often, that's his trade mark, (but he could not go very low), Eddie liked and still likes to keep base of his singing around third and fourth octave,but , when he feels that song needs it, also goes high without even trying to hard.. It's also comes natural to him and he does that so effortless and beautiful. Then, he can sing beautiful low notes, like in this one, like nobody else. His range is amazing. Not many singers have that kind of range... And color of that voice,ohh just.... that unexplainable color and emotion that makes you feel everything that you didn't even know is there to feel.. and you just buzz... Forever

    It’s a bit of an anachronism to say that Temple of the Dog was Pearl Jam with Chris Cornell. Technically yes, but Pearl Jam did not exist at the time. It was a tribute to Andrew Wood, who was the roommate of Chris Cornell, and had played in a band called Mother Love Bone with Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard (both of whom would later become members of Pearl Jam). Eddie Vedder was invited as a guest vocalist, and Mike McCready as guitarist to play on the record, and Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron played on the drums. Incidentally, Stone and Jeff would later form Pearl Jam with Mike and Eddie, and Matt Cameron would join them on the drums another decade later to form today’s Pearl Jam.

    Thanks for doing this one. If you ever get to watch Pearl Jam Twenty, the history of this album and song are explained beautifully. Say Hello 2 Heaven from this album is one of Cornell's best recordings. It's raw and beautiful. Painful tribute to Andy Wood. Definitely worth your time. th-cam.com/video/9HFUuwmcrsU/w-d-xo.html
