I watched Larry's spectacular career and his whole story seems like something out of a movie. Yes, there is "Hoosiers", but it's about a coach and an underdog team that he leads to greatness. Larry's story is about "the greatest Hoosier" and how he came to be known as Legend.
A shy, small town boy from a basketball hotbed state like Indiana practices for hours and hours, working on skills he'd use to pack overflowing crowds into his high school gym game after game. Then he takes his relatively unknown, undefeated, mid-major team to the NCAA title game before going on to a legendary NBA career that was defined by his amazing set of skills, unmatched ability in the most clutch moments and a work ethic that was second to none.
Larry grew up at a time, like others of his generation, when there weren't fancy basketball camps for kids to attend to improve their skills. He did it by practicing for countless hours. Just good old hard work that would lead to his now famously-known work ethic. Since high school he was known to begin every morning with 500 jump shots. He also had to hit 99 free throws in a row or he would start over. It's not coincidental at all that he led the NBA in free-throw percentage four times. He more than made up for not having the natural athletic ability of many of his opponents by being the most mentally and physically prepared player and by giving the greatest effort.
Some fans are awestruck by quick, high-flying players and their over-the-top athleticism. I don't think it's a coincidence that the first NBA slam dunk contest took place in '84-85 which was Michael's rookie season and Dominique's third.
Sure, it's hoops eye candy, but it doesn't count for any points. The ball still has to go in. Larry wasn't very athletic by NBA standards, but he averaged 24-10-6 over a 13-year career.
He took the Celtics from a 29 win team the season before he arrived in Boston to a 61 win team his rookie year, and that was before McHale, Parrish, DJ and Ainge joined the team. The 60+ win seasons would happen five more times in the '80s, as we'll as three 55+ win seasons.
Larry led the Celtics to five finals appearances in seven seasons ('81-87), including three championships. In those five finals he averaged 23-12-6, including a near triple-double in the '86 finals when he averaged 24-10-9 for what many consider to be the greatest team in NBA history. From '84-86 he won three consecutive MVP awards, joining Bill Russell and Wilt as the only players to have accomplished this and he did it at time in the league when there was Kareem, Magic, Worthy, Isaiah, Laimbeer, Michael, Julius, Moses, Barkley, Dominique, Drexler, Bernard King, Hakeem and Sampson among others.
Larry didn't just put up great numbers in the regular season. In 164 career playoff games he averaged 24-10-6 matching his regular season career average. He was also 6-0 against Michael in the playoffs. It's often been said that Michael won the battle, but Larry won the wars. However, after the first game he played against Michael, Larry told Dan Shaughnessy, who covered the Celtics for the Boston Globe in the 1980's, "That guy is gonna be the greatest player ever, you watch.'
Larry was selected to the All-NBA first team in each of his first nine seasons from '79-80 to '87-88 and made the All-Star team 12 times, the only absence being in '88-89 when he played in just the first six games of the season due to season-ending surgery on both of his heels to remove bone spurs.
All twelve of the players who were on the '89-90 Eastern Conference All-Star team (Larry, Isaiah, Michael, Barkley, Ewing, Parrish, McHale, Dumas, Dominique, Reggie, Scottie and Dennis) are in the Hall of Fame, with nine of them being selected to the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1996 and eleven of them being selected to the NBA's 75th Anniversary All-Time Team in 2021. Eight of the players who were on that year's Western Conference All-Star team (Stockton, Magic, Worthy, Hakeem, David Robinson, Karl Malone, Drexler and Mullin) are also in the Hall of Fame and are on both the 50th Anniversary team and 75th Anniversary team. Considering the incredible talent that Larry played against, his accomplishments are even more impressive.
Larry had the NBA's first 50-40-90 season in '86-87, shooting .525/.400/.910 and improved on it the following season shooting .527/.414/.916. He also won three consecutive three-point contests, the only ones he competed in. He is undeniably one of the most clutch shooters in NBA history with a nearly unmatched work ethic, and he often played hurt.
Charles Barkley once said, "Larry Bird can't run or jump because that was God's way of keeping the game fair." Maybe he's right because can you imagine a player with the basketball IQ and mastery of fundamentals that Larry had in an athletic body like Michael's or Dominique's?

He made everyone on his team better because you had to be aware 24/7 of when Bird got the ball and what he was going to do with it. His passing and shooting was elite and is on par with anyone who played the game. Great vid and reaction bro. 👍👍👍

Larry was the founding member of the 40-50-90- club. There are only 9 players who have made that club and only two of these make second appearance. Larry and Steve Nash were the only two repeats in that club and Nash did it 4 times, Nash was good but he was not a volume shooter like Larry,

Regarding Larry’s basket shooting ability, imma relate a story I saw someone else post:
Bird could do half court shots with ease. At one game, (I don’t remember the team, maybe another Larry expert will know this) There was a halftime contest for a fan from the audience to try to take & make a half court shot….as the half time was winding down, Larry approached the rack of 5 balls and took a half court shot. SWISH. there was some laughter. Larry took another. SWISH. This time some clapping. Third try. SWISH. Now the crowd is on their feet clapping. Larry made a 4th & a 5th half court shot to thunderous applause and calmly walked away. The opposing team was staring openmouthed, since he did all this at their end of the court. I’m sure they were demoralized.

  • @irishgrl

Larry Legend deserves FAR MORE respect than he gets. No other player in the modern era has gotten 3 consecutive MVP’s. Larry founded AND was a 2x member of the 50/40/90 club. Only 1 other player has done that (Nash). Larry won the 3pt contest all 3 times he entered. He won College player of the year, Rookie of the year, Coach of the year & Executive of the year….NO ONE ELSE HAS DONE THAT. Larry has been listed as a starting 5 for Kobe, LeBron, MJ, Wilt, & Bill Russell. And that’s just off the top of my head.
Larry could pass like Magic, was a sniper at the hoop, could play post OR perimeter, and rebounded as well as Moses Malone! His hand-eye coordination was the best in the NBA according to Coach Bobby Knight, and players such as Kareem, Dominique, James Worthy, Magic, Isaiah Thomas ALL sung his praises. NOBODY trash talked the way Larry did & NOBODY announced WHAT they were going to do, WHO they were going to do it to, or WHERE they were going to do it with as much regularity as Larry. AND HE ALWAYS BACKED HIS TRASH TALKING UP. Larry was a UNICORN. Nobody like him b4 or since.

The easiest way to explain how great Bird was: He came in 2nd in MVP voting in 1981, 1982 and 1983, then won in 1984, 1985 and 1986. He nearly won 6 straight MVPs. And AFTER those 6 years was when he founded (and repeated a second time) the 50-40-90 club. No player, including Michael, had a peak that was as brilliant as Bird's, in terms of overall skill, intelligence and toughness. During the 1986 season, it was pretty much a universal truth among the media that Bird was the greatest player of all time up to that point. One has to wrestle with the greatness of Jordan, Wilt, LeBron and Kareem to determine Bird's place in history, but he is top 8 with absolutely no question (I'd put Duncan as 9).

Even I have Jordan as my number 1 all time over Bird in second, but I think I’m biased, even though I grew up in New England, I was Lakers fan )so I had to hate the Celtics, which means I had to hate Bird.)
Bird is the only legend Jordan never got revenge on….in regular season match ups Bird had 17 wins against Jordan’s 11 wins….and in the play offs, Bird swept Jordan twice to be 6 and 0 against Jordan.
Jordan even credits Bird as to who he learned how to trash talk and get in opponents’ heads.
Bird was savage….He got Dr. J. Pissed off enough to fight by simply repeating two numbers. The number of points Bird had and the number of points Dr. J. Had. By the third quarter, those two numbers were 42 and 6!
Another game when they were playing Utah Jazz in Utah, Bird walked into the Jazz locker room before the game and announced to them that he felt good and felt like he’d get 43 points tonight. He scored his 43rd point in the 3rd quarter and then checked himself out of the game….lol.
Ultimate clutch shooter, ultimate trash talker with the skill to back it up, and unparalleled basketball IQ.
Bird’s back was garbage, and before that, way back before his college days, he had his right hand knuckles smashed and broken by a softball. He himself said after the shattered knuckles his touch was never the same and was only 80% as good as it once was……let that sink in.
Bird would crush anyone in today’s league period, no questions asked.

Steph shoots 3s all the time but until 79 that wasn't legal. So coaches didn't encourage it. Bird won the first, second and third three-point contest but never did it again because of some ankle issues he was having. If he'd been encouraged to shoot the three more I don't think there'd be any question about whether Steph or Larry was a better shooter. Larry always passed to the teammate with the higher percentage shot.

Magic called Bird the greatest ever in '93, so when Jordan got his 2 ring (if I remember right?).
And yeah, Larry blew out his back digging a driveway for his mother and played with basically a dislocated spine from '86/7 until his retirement. Dude had to go onto the stretcher for 2 or 3 hours before the game.
Another injury was before he even got into the NBA in his last or second-to-last college year he shattered his right index finger playing softball (you can still see the weirdly bent finger in the shot where he raises it in the 3-pt-contest segment ;P ); Bird said he never had the same feel for his shot as before the injury, go figure :P

It wasn't just his back. He missed most of the 89 season except for 6 games for operations on both his feet/ankles. But yeah. He screwed up his back in the mid-80s off season working on his mom's house in Indiana. Allegedly he threw it out lugging gravel or asphalt for the driveway and it never recovered. Part of his stubbornness to heal came from a ridiculous work ethic he learned from his late father who messed up his ankle at work. The next day, he asked Larry to help him get his boot on, laced it up tight, and went off to work again. Larry learned from an early age that pain is part of life and just did what he had to do to play. Unfortunately, it meant 2 hours of preparation before a practice or a game before he was ready to play once his back was damaged.

He had what was essentially a broken back for the last 4 or 5 years of his career. The game when he hit his face on the floor broke his right cheekbone and had a concussion that caused some double vision. The team physician told him he was done. As soon as the doctor left the room, Larry was out the door and back in the arena. Scored something like 17 more points to eliminate the Pacers from the playoffs. As far as the Jordan-Bird comparison goes, the Bulls were 0-6 against the Celtics in the playoffs and the Celtics won about twice as many regular season games than the Bulls during the time they were both playing. The Celtics won 32 more games in Bird's rookie year than they had the year before (which is still an NBA record for turnarounds) where the Bulls managed 11 or 12 game improvement. The Bulls didn't become the dynasty they were until Bird and a couple other Celtics retired.

Also depends on how you define a "shooter". Bird was deadly with either hand from within 15 feet and could pivot to either direction in the post game. If you consider a "shooter" as a guy that primarily waits for a pass outside the three-point arc, well... that's a pretty narrow definition of the term. There wasn't a spot on the offensive end of the floor, regardless of who was defending him, where Larry Bird was at a disadvantage. He'd drop a fade away from the post on a 7 footer just as calmly as he'd shoot over a guard from the arc.

The Bird/ Magic rivalry dated back to even before they met in a head to head championship duel for the 1979 NCAA title game. Upon both arriving in the NBA, they literally drove each other to greater heights! Great reaction to this mix tape! As you journey down this rabbit hole, keep an open mind! Note how driven Bird was to win! And ultimately, how accomplished each of his skills were in every aspect of this great game. Then you will fully appreciate just how great the Lakers were to be able to overcome, and over achieve the 80's Celtics!

At the time the Bird retired many people did consider him the greatest. People forget past generations. They always move on to the newer players they get to see in action. Also Jordan was 0-6 in the playoffs vs Bird. If you look at Bird vs Jordan shooting, Bird shot .496 while Jordan shot .497 for their career. The difference is Bird also averaged 10 rebounds per game, averaged more assists and shot a higher free throw percentage. You have the same thing with some people saying Lebron is better than Jordan now. The truth is you can only judge people by the era they played. Who knows how long Bird's body could have held up vs the soft play today. He may have been able to play 18 years. At the same time Lebron physically could have dominated in a league that didnt reward people for flopping if he had that mindset. People play according to the league they play in. You cant knock Bird/Jordan for not shooting as many 3s as todays game because that is not the way they played back then. Just like you really cant knock people for playing soft defense today. If you touch someone its a foul and they go to the line for even easier points. In the 80s and early 90s they let people play defense.

Larry's placement as an all-time shooter has to be up there near Steph to be honest, i'd put him 2nd.
Larry won the 3-pt contest 3 times in a row.
He had over 20 game-winning or game-tying shots in his career with several of those shots being in the playoffs, its hard to argue that any player was more clutch than Larry. That would be a losing arguement in the end. You got Ray Allen, MJ, Robert Horry, couple others that had some pretty consistent clutch shots, but Larry stands above everyone in the last 24 seconds of a game as far as i'm concerned.
And he created the 50/40/90 club by being the first player to ever shoot 50% from the field, 40% from 3, and 90% from the line for a season. He did it again the next year too, I believe it was in the 86-87 & 87-88 seasons when he did that. And he is still one of only two players ever to achieve that in multiple seasons. You also got Steve Nash on that list, who had FOUR 50/40/90 seasons which is crazy, and Steph is on there, Reggie Miller, Dirk, couple other guys. So. Realistically when thinking about shooters, that is also a main consideration showing very high consistency, shots under pressure with the game on the line, total 3's made, average percentage for a career, etc.

I'm a 62 yr/old white man, I'm from the greater Boston area. I had season tickets from 1984-1997 for all Celtics and Bruins games. I usually didn't pay increased cost for playoffs and would watch on TV. I watched all sports on TV from 1966 - 1984. I've watched Russell and Chamberland at end of his careers, watched Oscar Robertson who was perhaps best overall until Magic and Bird. I stopped watching the NBA closely around 2010, it's not the same game since players making super teams. Wilt was a mutant among mortals, but the most selfish player I ever saw. Russell was the greatest team first player I ever saw and why he got 11 rings. As good as they were, Jabar was the most dominant center of all time, great stats, clutch and durability. Magic was greatest passer and made his teams great and fast. One knock on Bird, his health took its toll and we never saw him at the best he was capable of as he was never healthy enough and played hurt all the time. Bird as a rookie played as if he was a seasoned veteran. Bird was billed as the great white hope for the Celtics and the NBA before his first training camp. All the black players on his team disliked him immediately because of the hype. After about 25-30 games, they all loved him. Bird was the greatest because he had a weapon no one else had. He could humiliate you or make you laugh or just prove he was better. Psychological warfare. Every game, he did 2-3 three things you couldn't believe you witnessed. The glassy eyed looks of his opponents are the thing I remember. Surprise, defeated, embarrassed or admiration. I saw the best players in three major sports of all time in Boston. Brady -Patriots, Orr-Bruins and Bird-Celtics. I've also seen about 10 players in sports that were also on Boston teams that were top ten all-time. If you watch all the videos recommended, I think you should be convinced. My top 5 boy position, Bird SF, Jabar C, Duncan PF, Magic PG and Jordan SG. Put them in any order you want.

Bird is the founding member of the 50/40/90 club lol. Talking about greatest shooters of all time. Back in the 80's, players would be benched for taking bad shots and threes were seldom taken. You definitely want to check out Clayton Crowleys Making the Case series. The Bird one is my favorite. As to best shooter, Larry is the most efficient shooter of all time. Founder of the 50/40/90 club, did it twice, and within 1% of 50/40/90 on his career. Three time back to back 3pt champ. That alley oop, catch in the air 3pt shot that only a handful of guys have done? Larry has like a dozen of them. He can get hit, be falling, shoot while upsidedown and make it. Steph is a better deep shooter, though we should acknowledge that Larry's generation were discouraged from taking deep shots. But apparently when the boys needed a morale boost or day off, KC would tell them if anybody could make a half court shot they could have the day off. They'd just give it to Larry and he'd send them home. Overall, I think Larry is the best shooter ever. He's my #2 GOAT behind Jordan.

There has never been a big man who had so many full court passes for assists before Bird, nor has one shown up since he retired. There's a video that shows quite a few of his assists after the other team scored. After a rebound, he could throw long to Parish or McHale or Dennis Johnson or Ainge, or.... he did it all the time. Magic had his thing, but nobody has the long ball assist with the best accuracy ever as did Bird. He was exciting to watch fighting for the rebound, or waiting for some spectacular pass to DJ, or whatever he was doing he was looking for the open man. Nobody like Bird. Never will be again.

3pt shooting is tough to gauge between eras imo. Back in Bird's- Reggie Miller's years great shooters like them only averaged three 3pt shots per game. Ray Allen's era teams only averaged 10 3pt shots per game with Ray averaging 5 3pt attempts per game. Today teams average almost 30 3's per game, and Steph averages almost 10 attempts per game. Add to that the pace, no hand checking, and the lack of defense refs allow. Not taking away from Steph, but one could argue his numbers would not be the same if he played even 10 years sooner. Not for a lack of skill, but just the change in the system alone would alter them greatly.

I've been an NBA fan since the mid 1970's and coached youth basketball for years. My personal top 5 are: 1. Michael Jordan, 2. Larry Bird, 3. Magic Johnson, 4. Kobe Brant, 5. Julius Irving. I’ve seen everyone over the last 45+ years. IMO, these players had the best BALANCE of FG%, FT%, clutch play, great offense, great defense, makes teammates better, great team play, shares the ball, passing ability, finishing, coachable, high basketball IQ, finds a way to win, has all areas of the basic fundamentals down pat, seeks high % shots first, knows where teammates are on the court at all times, able to score while being fouled, played against tougher competition, played against great defenses. No one today (not even Lebron, and that he flops brings down his value) has ALL of these attributes. To me, only Michael Jordan and Larry Bird have ALL of these attributes. Though today's players have a lot of talent, most players lack most of these attributes and no one has all of them. Defense and team play aren’t nearly as good today as in the 80’s/90’s. Great video. You did a good job.

Imagine if he never suffered that hand injury before coming to the league. He would have definitely been unstoppable. And as for the 3 pt shooting. Steph been working on his 3 pt shot since he was a kid. Larry didn't have that luxury because there was no 3 pt line before he came in the league. Larry is the #1 SHOOTER. Sorry Curry fans.
Limitless range, left or right handed, post, midrange, clutch. 3 peat 3pt contest winner.
Coach tells the team, if a player can hit a half court shot, they could go home. Larry steps out..hits it. They all go home.
From my experience, first time watching Larry Bird highlights, most fans (of other players) will say. Hey. Nice! Might be top 10 or 15 all time.
Then they watch another...and another. Top 7....top 5.. maybe top 3...
Then you get to that Indiana Pacer playoff game. Fractured his cheek bone. Was in traction for his back the night before, his back was so bad he couldnt put on his shorts...already had both feet surgically repaired (achilles, spurs)...and the Dr. said.. "You know you are done, right?"
And when the Dr. left him...and the score got tight, Larry walked back out to the court. .won the game.
At that moment.. you begin to realuze Larry was the most skilled, complete player ever.
    Just a warning. 😄

I watched them film most of White Men Can't Jump and many of my friends are in the film playing ball. I love Venice.

Steph Curry wouldn't shoot like Steph Curry, if he played back then. Coaches would bench players with that many 3 attempts. The 3 pointer was in it's infancy, and regarded as lazy basketball. The focus was on team basketball, and finding the highest percentage shot. If Bird took as many 3 attempts as Curry, he would own every 3 point record there was.

Larry bird broke his knuckle while in college right after he got drafted by the Celtics and to this day he will tell you that he’s never had the same touch on the ball as he did before he broke his knuckle and right now he’s Arguably top five best shooters of all time!! Could you imagine what his career numbers would’ve been had he not broke his knuckle?? If you really pay attention to his highlight reels you will see most of his shots touch nothing but net which is amazing Accuracy and feel… I grew up watching this guy and Magic Johnson battle it in the 80s and let me just tell you that was by far the best decade a basketball… He’s unarguably top 10 of all time

Larry Bird played only 13 seasons earning 3 championship rings against opponents the likes of MJ, Magic, Dr. J, Isiah, Olajuwon, and earned the nickname LEGEND. He is the greatest clutch/fully guarded shooting assassin to ever live. He could reveal to the opponents how the play was going to unfold, where the facial dagger shot would come from, that there’s nothing they can do to stop it and back it up. Considering the what ifs had he played 20 years like Kobe or 21 like Dirk, any NBA fan who is comfortable placing greatness nicknamed LEGEND on their 4 and under list knows very little about the history of the NBA. Bird is undoubtedly top 3 GO🐐T!

Can I ask you a question - What makes Steph Curry the greatest shooter of all time?
Lot's of people say it but don't explain.
Yes he has made the most 3 pointers of all time.
He has also taken the most 3 pointers of all time.
However his 3-pt percentage is not the best all time and even his brother has a better 3-point percentage.
What are the criteria that make him that?

    • @HenDawgTV
      @HenDawgTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@HenDawgTV It's hard for me to say as like I said - what is the criteria and I have not come up with the right mixture yet. Jordan and Chamberlain are just about tied in points per game (Jordan 30.12, Chamberlain 30.07) Steph is the number 1 free throw shooter of all time. Kareem has scored the most points of all time. But there is the one category I cannot find a measurement for and that is clutch. However, the person with the most game winning shots in NBA history is Kobe. He made the pressure shot time after time. Jordan, Bird and even Lebron have hit many clutch shots but none as many as Kobe. Does that make him the best shooter?
      Kobe fg% 44.7%, 3-pt 32.9%, ft 83.7%
      Steph fg% 47.5%, 3pt 43.1%, ft 90.8%
      Jordan fg% 49.7%, 3pt 32.7%, ft 83.4%
      Bird fg% 49.6%, 3pt 37.6%, ft 88.6%
      Lebron fg% 50.4%, 3pt 34.6%, ft 73.4%
      They are all great shooters.
However there is one category that is not on any list and I have yet to see any player talked about it the way Bird is.
There are many stories from players where they say Bird would tell them the play and where he was going to shoot from when the game was on the line. That's a special kind of in your face that none of the other players can match that.

@@robgelfand2414 Pefect explanation. I wouldnt consider Kobe just because his shooting percentage is no where near the others. You have tons of clutch shots when you throw up that many shots. Also Jordan and Bird were usually ahead and didnt need to try and make as many clutch shots, but when the time came they did it. If Kobe shot a higher percentage and was eas efficient then he would never have been put in a position to have to try and make the big shot.

Besides his bad back, and all the injuries he sustained as an NBA player, the summer when he was drafted by the Celtics, he broke the little finger on his shooting hand playing softball. He didn't tell the Celtics, but afterwards he said he could never shoot with the same accuracy again! He dove for loose balls with abandon, something most star players don't do. He's definitely Top 5 anyway, maybe Top 3, and if he didn't have all those injuries, maybe he'd be considered the best ever.

If you're looking at shooting stats, Steph is right up there, sure - but he's playing for those stats, and the current strategy and team composition allows him to. It's a different era. Bird was about *winning.* He's #3 all time in winning percentage (73.58%), because he was a well-rounded player - get some buckets when he needs to, feed his teammates, pass, steal - whatever it takes to win. Steph can shoot, but he's way behind (66.0%) in winning.
I heard a stat that Bird is the only player in the top 50 in passing, assists and rebounds to average 20+ points, 10+ assists and 5+ rebounds for his whole career.

@HenDawgz, I think one of the best insights into Larry Bird and Magic Johnson is an interview they did on David Letterman. It really gives you insight into their character and relationship. You see poor Mid-Western humility in both of them while at the same time getting a glimpse of the competitive heart of two lions that still have a fire within them even though they both are well beyond their youthful exploits. Links are below. TH-cam only has the whole interview on different sources.
